"He prefers spending the time to ship a single game with an ending instead of three short cliffhanger episodes staggered over a year or two."

Anyone else get a good chuckle at that?

I think 3-4 months sounds about right if the entire industry goes episodic. If suddenly theres a ton of different games being released it would be a lot easier to play multiple games at once if they were broken up into episodes. And with enough to play I could see 3-4 months being a good number so long as enough episodes from other games fill the gaps.

I think episodic content would work perfectly with maybe smaller more casual style games that involve storylines, short low-budget indie-gaming or something of the like with maybe a couple weeks between small releases. For bigger more involved complex games it's like splitting a big blockbuster hollywood film into small half hour snippets and seperating them by a couple of months.

I really enjoyed his comments on the gaming industry, mainly because I grew up playing his games and I agree that episodic content is pointless if it takes too long to be delivered (We want HL2 expansions, not episodes. Episodes aren't supposed to take an entire year. Expansions are.) and Steam could be the cornerpoint of the entire PC gaming industry. I see PC games not selling all the time because either the player can't use it on their computer or are generally not interested.

Episodic gaming is a great way for the industry to get people to pay multiple times to play the same game. Basically you take one full length game, chop it up and sell each piece individually.

I disagree, I think Half Life 2: Episode 2 will be a great value, the added games look awesome.

Imagine how long it would take for them to ship episodic content for Duke Nukem Forever.

Steam Sucks. When I bought HalfLife 2, I could not play the game until after 6 hours of being "Steamed"

3DRealms cant figure out how to release a game, let alone an Episodic anything.
Remember Duke Nukem : Forever (In development forever)

@#9 want a good laugh? They're STILL claiming that Duke Nukem Fornever will ship and this was back in May just after E3. Funny thing is, my younger brother was in his last year of High School when DNF was announced.
This year, he graduates from medical school. From stoner to Doctor in less time than it takes 3DR release a game. I think even I could develop a game given almost a decade to accomplish the task.

I think episodic gaming is something that needs to be looked into further and that it may have a place between 'full' game releases (like what bioware have planned with Mass Effect). Part of the appeal of games like HL1 & HL2, Far Cry etc is that they were so long, they were very good value.

I'm also looking forward to Ep 2 for HL2 but am disappointed that it has once again been put back until Feb next year, I thought the idea of episodic gaming was quick, regular releases? Also I felt that Ep 1 was too short (personal opinion only) and if ep gaming is going to be like that then developers really need to ensure that releases are regular and on time.

Despite the fact that I had a horrible experience with Steam when I got HL2 (during launch week), I've had no technical problems since. I do wish there was a shorter time between Valve products, but the fact that I can download stuff like Psychonauts and Pirates! makes up for it.

Anyone care to speculate whether Google would be interested in buying Steam? I'm sure Sony Online, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Gametap would all be interested.
