Can anyone who is knowledgable in bluetooth tech confirm or denounce that this CAN be fixed via updates. It has really started to bother me while playing R:FoM, and Something like this should NOT happen with console controllers... i want to have control 100% of the time... If it cant be fixed with updates, would it be fixed via new controllers or would the console hardware need to be replaced as well?

Guess what, boys and girls, it's time for Fun With Etymology!

The verb "niggle," meaning to carp on a petty subject (also used as a noun meaning a petty concern, adjective form "niggling") actually descends from the Scandanavian word "nig," meaning a stingy person.

the racial epithet, which I won't repeat, is actually a corruption of the Latinate root word "neger," meaning black. While it sounds similar to the epithet, "niggle" has nothing to do with any race or skin tone.

Now that facts have shown the racial outrage to be unwarranted, back to your regularly scheduled ranting about video games, already in progress.

While your correct the Wii does use a bluetooth system for its wireless and microsft might as well. They are actually modified by Nintendo and Microsoft for the purpose of being game controllers and nothing else. Sony is the only one that used the true bluetooth 2.0 standard.

Nintendo seems to be following standard bluetooth. My computer can find and talk to it, it just has no idea what the hell it is. Microsoft isn't even using bluetooth. And even if Sony's following the standard to an extent, it's only able to pair with the PS3 over the USB cable. That sure as hell isn't in the bluetooth spec.

@ 18 and 44

"18. i think the word niggle is offensive."

"44. Nice to see Michael Richards back on his feet as a writer here at Joystiq. Good luck to you here, Mike. No time like the present to rebuild a career."

Let me guess...you have a problem with the word "niggardly", too, despite the fact that neither word has anything to do with the racial slur.

Morons.

I work in a school and we have loads of wireless access points around - so believe me, I know a thing or two about wireless interference.

I've *always* said that using bluetooth for the PS3 controllers, along with 2.4 ghz wireless on a switch-system was a big mistake. They are on the same frequency - there will always be interference, it's just a question of how much.

It may not seem like it matters too much at the moment, but what about when you invite a friend round to play split-screen together against guys online - two bluetooth controllers, plus wireless network.

Then, what if you want to use headsets (say you are two members of a 20 man team on Resistance or something) - you now have FOUR wireless devices going off while your wireless network switches in between.

And you'd better pray you don't have your cordless phone near it (or your neighbour's in the next apartment). Or that you get peckish and microwave a snack while you play...

I'd love to see how Sony can resolve these inherent interference issues with an update (as, no doubt, would Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Cisco and all the rest).

At least the 360 wireless adapter, although not included, at least gives the option of 802.11a...

5 ghz ftw!

Actually Bluetooth *WAS* designed for this. Cable replacement was one of the first and most prominent use cases for BT technology.

As for using BT 2.0, well adhering to specs is always a good thing.

Give it time, Sony will fix the problem.

It's not like the 360 was without issues.

I was trying to think of an instance that would dissolve the SNES's perfect status...and unfortunately I found one.

Zelda: LTTP had some slow-down.

Well, nothing's perfect.

I'm really surprised Sony went with Blu-tooth. It's known for drops. Not so bad, resyncing on a phone call with my Blu-tooth headset, because I just grab the phone to finish the call. Annoying yes, but not the deathblow.

On a game controller? Ummm, if you've not saved your progress for an hour or so and lose it do to a 5 second controller resync you're going to be pissed.

Also, how can you compete in a racing sim online? Yeah, for a Ridge Racer maybe spinning out or going straight into a wall is OK, but what about a sim with damage... Crap. There goes the race.

We removed all our bluetooth devices where I work, because they were constantly dropping connection in our environment of WiFi access points and Blackberries.

The one thing I don't miss is having to re-sync bluetooth after it has lost connection

All I really want in a controller is some *tightass wireless rumble* and they offer me *bluetooth deadzone niggle*--Actually I don't have one yet but from everything I read sixaxis sounds pretty freaking dissapointing.

How about a *real* solid next generation wireless controller with improved ergonomics, advanced rumble, and a tilt option? Is this truly not possible? Why not put two controllers in with the console while you are at it. I will gladly pay more.

Remember all of the fanboy howling about how Bluetooth was sooooo superior to 360's wireless setup and how their Bluetooth remote would own because it's soooo much better than IR? Well, here. Have some salt to go with that crow.

i have yet to have any problems with my ps3 and sixaxis's.

no having to plug it in to re sync, or any crap like that.

no controller cutting out on me.

and yes, this is with rr7, resistance, tony hawk, or genji.

so....yea....maby u guys are just dumb? lol jp.

but to this poster
"Can firmware updates really fix something like this? I mean, what if the reason it loses sync is cause by a faulty hardware design, or if the scaling issues are simply because the scaler is faulty as well, so they simply decided to not use it? Will a firmware upgrade magically fix this?"

why do you even post a comment? actually, just dont speak, it will be better for all of us. 'Cus if we lived in ur world, there would be scalers in our ps3 that, i guess if they got tired or lazy, would stop scaling stuff.

Like the other PS3 owners who have posted, I haven't experienced any of the problems you guys at Joystiq have had. I played Resistance online through the wi-fi last night for about 2 hours with my roomate using her laptop on and off throughout the night (with wifi). Didn't have any hiccups at all.

As for resyncing, I've never had to do that either (except when updating the firmware) even after I moved the PS3 to 4 different houses over Thanksgiving.

Sounds like you guys might have a bad controller.

I have currently in my house 2 DiNovo wireless bluetooth desktops, 2 bluetooth cell phones, a bluetooth headset for each phone and a third bluetooth headset paired to one of the computers for skype calls as well as 2 stereo bluetooth A2DP headphones, one paired to the computer, the other paired to the iPod adapter. Also, there's the bluetooth enabled PDA that syncs to the computer and shares a headset with one of the phones.

Needless to say I'm a BT fanatic, I loved it since I first heard about and I think it's a beautifull thing. If you were keeping count, that's 17 bluetooth devices in my house, 8 of which are ALLWAYS operating, sometimes up to 15 or 16 at the same time. Even with a Wi-Fi network and 2 wireless clients in the house I've never had any problems with any of my BT devices going out of sync or dropping conections, never had a problem with either mouse pointer flying around randomly. BT has been pretty boring for me. Which is the way I like it.

I just love how because one or two peopl have had a problem with their controllers, the technolly automatically sucks and the console has horrible hardware design. Why can't anyone accept that this may be an ISOLATED incident. While we're on the topic of controllers disconnecting, I'd rather have my SIXAXIS disconetc from the console and lose a race then have my Wiimote disconect from my wrist and loose a tv. (or window, or pda, or beer)
