First footage of Hamster Quest: Wheel of Respite

Though this alpha footage could easily be misinterpreted as a record of a hamster's harrowing journey (involving an intricately constructed series of traps, enemies and elevators), the vivid graphics and sweeping orchestral soundtrack make the truth quite apparent. Scheduled for release sometime in 2007, Hamster Quest: Wheel of Respite promises to deliver an epic journey that will engage the senses, challenge the mind and delve into the emotional relationship between a deranged man and his beloved hamster. It says here.
"Hamster Quest is a full-bodied experience," says Syrian Campbell, the game's lead and only designer. "It has a heart, because you'll become emotionally attached to Mr. Hamstar, the main character, as he attempts to defeat the evil mecha guinea pig. It also has a brain, because some of the puzzles will really stump you. Then, there's the liver and kidneys which, uh, refers to the... other stuff. Which is really cool!"
The official Hamster Quest trailer is embedded for your inevitable viewing pleasure after the break.

next gen starts now! look at those graphics, not to mention the super realistic hamster animation....did they use mo-cap for that?
funkonaut @ Dec 1st 2006 5:32PM
Simply awesome.
I never knew hamsters could be useful. Or entertaining. :P
Author X @ Dec 1st 2006 6:47PM
Aw man, that looks like a fun game, but the graphics! I know, I know, it's a development video, but the hamster looks BEAUTIFUL, and the backgrounds and enemies are just AWFUL. I guess they've been spending all their development on /just/ Mr. Hamstar and the physics engine (which, BTW, look fantastic considering how Mr. Hamstar is interacting with what environment there is) and slapped together a bunch of blocks with some floating sprites. Oh well, this still looks like a title I'll be keeping my eye on. Good catch, Joystiq!
Barry @ Dec 1st 2006 5:32PM
That's the pinnacle of human achievement.
We can give up now.
HotShotX @ Dec 1st 2006 5:35PM
To hell with next-gen, I want THIS game. Quite possible the most innovative and original idea on the market yet.

Snurp @ Dec 1st 2006 5:49PM
That hampster got hit so many times and didn't die.
It has cheats.
Brian (the REAL Brian) @ Dec 1st 2006 5:51PM
I like how they damn near flattened the hamster on the "elevator". Also, the one monster was continuously sodomizing the poor hamster. Did anyone else catch that?

A great adventure is waiting for you ahead
Hurry onward Lemmiwinks, or you will soon be dead
The journey before you may be long and filled with
woe
But you must escape the gay man's ass so your tale
can be told
Lemmiwinks, Lemmiwinks, Lemmiwinks, Lemmiwinks
Lemmiwinks journeyed a distance far and fast
To find his way out of a gay man's ass
The road ahead is filled with danger and fright
But push onwards Lemmiwinks with all of your might
The Sparrow Prince lies somewhere way up ahead
Don't look back Lemmiwinks or you'll soon be dead
Lemmiwinks, Lemmiwinks the time is growing late
Slow down now and seal your fate.
Take the magic helmet torch to help you light the
way
There's still a lot of ground to cross inside the
man so gay
Ahead of you lies adventure, and your strength
still lies within
Freedom from the ass of doom is the treasure you
will win
Now that you're the Gerbil King there's more
adventures to go on
Fly away to faraway lands into the setting sun
There's still so many enemies and battles yet to
fight
For Lemmiwinks the Gerbil King to be told another
night
Lemmi, Lemmi, Lemmiwinks
Lem, Lemmiwinks
Lemmiwinks, Lem, Lemmi, Lemmiwinks
Lemmiwinks, Lemmiwinks, Lemmiwinks, Lemmiwinks,
Gerbil King!
ill trooper @ Dec 1st 2006 6:03PM
Very realistic graphics!
My only worry is that they made the little guy listen to that music in real time while he ran the gauntlet. THAT would truly be inhumane.
BklynKid @ Dec 1st 2006 6:10PM
Post #7 may be answering my question, but is the original show from Lemmings?
Loved that game.
BklynKid @ Dec 1st 2006 6:10PM
Err, show = shot.
Stephen King @ Dec 1st 2006 6:12PM
#9, that song is from South Park.

That hamster missed the secret level jump that take you to a room where you get to eat your own young.
supremespleen @ Dec 1st 2006 6:20PM
That was fun to watch.
Jackson Pritt @ Dec 1st 2006 6:53PM
What system is this coming out for?
Fabre @ Dec 2nd 2006 12:19AM
For any who are wondering, this is based on the C64 game "Monty on the Run"
Dark_Jedi @ Dec 1st 2006 7:20PM
Bah, you children know nothing! (including Joystiq);)
The hamster is running through a mock up of an old C64/Spectrum game called 'Monty on the Run'
(the music is from it too)

The most important question that no one has asked yet is: 360, Wii or PS3?
William @ Dec 1st 2006 8:57PM
Wait. Seriously, was that real?
William @ Dec 1st 2006 7:06PM
Wait. Seriously, is that a real game?
Deano @ Dec 1st 2006 7:42PM

Can I get this hamster's autograph?
When's level 2 gonna be on video?
:-)
Jonah Falcon @ Dec 1st 2006 11:03PM
THE EYES, BOO! GO FOR THE EYES!!!
Snurp @ Dec 1st 2006 9:15PM
100% authentically real. Totally.
DarkNessBear @ Dec 2nd 2006 1:50AM
Woah.
Those graphics were really good. The backgrounds were lame, but the animations of the hamster and the look of the hamster were AMAZING.
Wow, these developers need to make larger scale games with the beautiful animation they used in this game. Did they use the HAMX animation engine for the hamster? I think they did. I thought no game used it... im impressed.
What system is it going to come out for?
Me @ Dec 2nd 2006 2:35AM
Pretty good but not everything I was hoping for, I give it an 8.8.
Zo K. @ Dec 2nd 2006 4:27AM
Oh. My. God.
You people are too much!! "Is it really, really real?" XD
Way to go, Ludwig. ^^
Davide Inglima - limaCAT @ Dec 2nd 2006 4:55AM
I wonder if it will come out on my Commodore 64 as well.

Need to find it!

Thank god I thought I was the only one.
I was sitting there then suddenly it dawned on me..."that thing looks like a dildo".
Can I say dildo here?
