Start building your Wii site
WiiNintendo.net is assembling a thorough guide for all y'all web designers interested in tailoring your sites for Wii's Opera browser. The initial entry reveals that the Wii Shop Channel displays at 608x456 pixels, although the browser will be capable of displaying in 640x480 resolution. If you want to be consistent with Nintendo's apparent tastes, make sure your site scales properly to the 608-pixel width. The guide also provides samples of Nintendo's choice of buttons, information about the Wii font, and some Javascript and CSS files. Future guide updates will focus on Javascript performance, Flash, sound, cursors, Wiimote buttons, zooming, selecting, and Wii standards. The next update is scheduled for later today.

If you have your Wii set to 16x9 will it increase the resolution to the widescreen format, or will they display in 4:3 stretched?
Mr, Objectional @ Dec 1st 2006 4:44AM
I would imagine it would render like on a widescreen monitor- with blank space on the sides. Like I have side padding bars of that wonderful joystiq blue right now.

Remember, you aren't developing for a 640x480 display. The typical TV is not a VGA monitor.
You're developing for an NTSC display, which brings in all kinds of hassles, including keeping stuff in the 'NTSC safe' zone. If you become immersed in these details you'll come to realize that the shift to HDTV is long overdue from this antique that has been with us since Eisenhower was President, and even that was a hack to add color to a system going back to the late 1930s.

Oh wow I didn't even think about the bars- I'm on a 16x9 monitor but I never run my browser in full screen just in a window- I see them now lol

That sure is a lot of speculation on the behalf of that website! That's just related to the shop and the browser hack at best.

Indeed, epobirs. To clarify your point a bit, your average TV actually "chops off" (so to speak) several pixels on all four sides of the display. That's likely why after talking of 640x480, Nintendo displayed their site at 608x456.
I am very glad to see information beginning to appear for Wii browsing. Hopefully Nintendo/Opera will lend some official support to developers once the browser launches.
Now, if we could get some more information on the PS3 browser (oh why couldn't Sony just use Opera or build off the Gecko engine?!)...

NEAT!
I wonder what kind of content (if any) will be designed specifically for the Wii browser? Would it be possible to blog from a Wii? If so, the idea of a Wii-based blogging community like Livejournal would be awesome, but unfortunately wiijournal.com is already taken! :(
Hinkmania @ Dec 1st 2006 4:22PM
I wonder how my blog at http://hinkman.blogspot.com would look on the browser? I guess I'll have to wait and see. I doubt the opera for devices browser supports favicon :P
Gavin @ Dec 1st 2006 8:41PM
So Hinkmania, this post is just an excuse to spam our blogs?
Andy @ Dec 2nd 2006 2:37PM
aw man this is gonna be great! can't wait!!
Hinkmania @ Dec 4th 2006 7:19PM
No,Gavin. I really wondered how it will look. It'll probably be mangled on such a small resolution. I don't even know what it looks like at 800x600. And since I was mentioning it, I figured I might as well note the address as well.
