E3's PS3 Motor Storm presentation vs. reality
Motor Storm was a very different looking game when it was shown at E3, like this video from GameTrailers shows. We're pretty much used to bullshot stills by now, but it's almost nice and nauseating to look at what we were told is actual game footage back at E3 and compare it with what was delivered. We can't wait to see what Killzone 2 ends up looking like considering that infamous footage from E3 2005 was originally touted as for real, then reneged, and now is apparently as beautiful as we originally saw it.

I played Motorstorm at Best Buy -- it was disappointing visually. I expected it to be so much more.
azesino @ Dec 2nd 2006 10:51PM
Killzone will also disapoint, its expected
teehee @ Dec 2nd 2006 10:51PM
so its a much more linear smugglers run with no missions and dirtbikes? no more ps3 for me(until GT5)
Carl @ Dec 2nd 2006 10:53PM
the ps3 is just a complete disappointment in general
mike @ Dec 2nd 2006 10:53PM
It's like what was promised with the Playstation 2 all over again.

It doesn't even look close to the target render and infact some of the things shown in the target render (told as realtime during the trailer) are not even present in the game.
The game is beautiful, the physics are great, the textures still look low-res.
chigzilla @ Dec 2nd 2006 10:59PM
Sony's whole E3 mission was to get people to wait for the PS3 instead of buying a 360. The mainstream media still believes that actual PS3 gameplay was shown at E3 2005. Hopefully, the internet sites will expose their fraudulent hype machine especially if Killzone does not deliver.
Chris @ Dec 2nd 2006 10:59PM
I played the demo at EB, and the framerate was way too choppy. PS3 so far has been very disappointting.
TopaZ @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:00PM
Obviously not up to the standards of the pre-render, but still looks pretty great to me.
Alex @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:01PM
The Motorstorm demo was pretty damn impressive, even though it was the TGS build. At my Gamestop there's usually about 2 or 3 people waiting in line to play the demo, which is pretty good compared to the lonely 360 kiosk. It's rare that people get to directly compare the two systems, but the result is that people are becoming a lot more impressed with the PS3.
Boris Shubinsky @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:03PM
The reason you see people waiting to play the PS3 as opposed to the 360 is because the PS3 is not as readily available to them as the 360. It's not due to the quality of the content.
TopaZ @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:03PM
Also, does anyone remember the 360 launch line-up? Perfect Dark Zero, anyone?
Saxamoophone @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:03PM
Maybe they were showing off the PS4 by mistake?
If they DID have those graphics, then heck yeah, sign me up to buy a PS3. But since that E3 presentation the other year was obviously a flat out lie...I think I'll just stick with my Wi60.
Jecrell @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:05PM
... or more depressed in my case. =/
RD @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:06PM
I played the demo at Best Buy for about 15 minutes and it looked great, framerate was smooth as glass, controlls were tight and very responsive. No complaints at all. Made me want a PS3 even more. Of course the E3 trailer is different, it was prerendered bullshot as always.
webrunner @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:06PM
I played the motorstorm demo today, and I have to say i was not "pretty damn impress"ed. What was the framerate on that thing, 20?
I personally think it's barely acceptable if a next-gen game is under 60, considering n64 games have managed it.
btsavage @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:08PM
I had a chance to play the demo at Target today in 720p. It looked really nice, and the crashes we're pretty fun. But it looks nothing like they said it would, and that's really what I take issue with. Sony is crumbling under the weight of it's own lies, and it serves them right.
Saxamoophone @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:08PM
13, the difference is, Microsoft NEVER showed off that much fake gameplay footage. I agree, PDZ was awful, but they didn't show off fake graphics for it.
I'm interested to see how the halo3 trailer coming out monday will look. Will it compare to the real thing? I believe this is the first time Microsoft is allowing fake gameplay...so...I hope they don't go the same way as Sony.
FatOprah @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:11PM
Uh... people are obviously more interested in the PS3 kiosk. It's new, impossible to buy, and it's likely they are seeing it for the first time. It's not because of the Motorstorm demo, which I agree doesn't look all that bad, but is still rather underwhelming for reasons already mentioned.
BlessedBullet @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:18PM
@13
I remember Perfect Dark Zero but I don't remember Microsoft making "target renders" to boost hype. It was their biggest game for their launch and all the gameplay footage looked unimpressive - but at least it was real.
Milkshake @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:21PM
Im so glad that I made the jump to the 360 instead of waiting for the PS3. With the amount of false information sony has blurted about the PS3 it must really suck to have spent $600 dollars buying into them lies. I feel bad for the suckers who got double scammed paying more on ebay OUCH!!!!
tomatoma @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:22PM
You forgot gundam. :P
Optimus Prime @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:25PM
lol.. using target renders as marketing/PR aint new. Yea, its a bit sketchy, but, thats the way it is and people use it because it works for unsuspecting people.
It no different than Nintendo showing their ads with people flailing their limbs everywhere, ducking behind couches, hiding behind pillars, etc.
And, in those redsteel ads, they voiced over the sound from the speaker in the wiimote.. the speaker is crap, it doesnt sound the way its presented. So, there's enough hate to go around.
Dalvin @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:26PM
This is just like when sony showed off the emotion engine for the ps2. They showed an old man aging realtime oin a presentation for the ps2. They said the ps2 was capable of it. And that was a lie. How can people support a game company who is based on lies.
Richard @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:27PM
When I played this at Futureshop, i was like "what the hell? wasnt this supposed to be more realistic looking than reality itself? this was supposed to define a genre, and now it looks like a cheap N64 game --if that! JUNK!"
..and then the PS3 kiosk overheated. twice. i kid you not.
melcrose @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:31PM
Color me absolutely stunned.
I played this complete POS in Walmart for about an hour while waiting for the wife. I have NEVER played anything so un-engaging in my life. Dear Lord, F-Zero on the SNES was far easier to get into and more satisfying once you did.
They should be lined up and shot for the lies pushed at e3. That's so far from close that . . that. . .
I can't even speak. AND THE GAME IS JUST SO.. BLAH.
Ps3 rox dude!
not
btsavage @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:31PM
@24
I know using target renders as a marketing tool is nothing new, but your analogy with the Wii commercials is laughable. It's not like Nintendo went out of their way to say that the Wii-mote speakers would sound life-like then under delivered. Sony all along has touted that their system will look the best and they gave us these target renders as proof of what's to come. They severely over promised and under delivered.
Turo @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:32PM
if u notice that before or after a race when u can revolve the camera, u will see that the shrubs are just 2D figures that spin flatly to appear fully 3 dimensional but it is apallingly obvious that they are not. cmon now, thats not next gen to me. very disappointing
Pedro @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:33PM
24-
Actually it is entirely different. Sony showed trailers that they knew made their hardware could in no way approximate. They deliberately misled people to build hype.
Nintendo made those ads as an exageration. To drive home the idea of how different the gameplay is. The only way it would be similar would be if nintendo showed 360 quality graphics and said they were "target renders"
Jecrell @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:33PM
Only Optimus Prime could compare the PS3 target renders to the Nintendo Wii's people behind couches...
... you can just see the similarities. =D
Crhris @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:34PM
Not trying to induce any flames but am I the only person who thought "Wow, excitetruck for PS3." I mean the target renders may be a possibility in the future, but you've just spent the last year talking up the horespower of your system. Then one of your launch titles looks like it could be running on your competitor's system, whom you've dismissed as being a glorified pocket calculator. I don't really see this as anything more than growing pains of a normal launch but for crying out loud, you'd think the marketing department would stop shooting themselves in the foot already.
Mitochondria @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:36PM
The problem with most consumers is that they are ignorant. They don't do research on the products they are buying and then they become unsatisfied with their purchases when they don’t deliver as expected. More people should look at buying things as an investment, and not just an, “at-the-moment luxury”.
I for one, feel that my 360 was a great investment and something that seems to be worth every penny.
And remember, it’s about the games and the quality of service, not how pretty they pictures are, those are jusy icing on the cake.
logikil @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:39PM
Motorstorm looks good, I think its a beautiful offroad racer. But to compare it to the bullshit target render that Sony threw up during E3, I mean come on man. Everyone at this point knows that Sony's whole purpose during E3 05 was to draw attention away from the 360, period. Will games ultimately look like that video? I don't know maybe, but i doubt it. They will look great, but not to that level. And anyone who really believes the two are comparable is just blind.
On a side note, people are entirely too critical of the first two Rare games for the 360. Kameo was a charming game, albeit ultimately short. And PDZ, aside from not being able to jump and the "go here" arrows if you leave them on, is not nearly as bad as people want to make it.
And will Killzone 2 look like the "target render?" I doubt it. I have no doubts it will look good, but not that good.
Joe @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:39PM
Hmm... I'll take Excite Truck over Motorstorm anyday.
SickNic @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:40PM
Remember what Sony has been saying all along. It's not what you get now, you are paying for potential. Maybe towards the end of the PS3's 10 year cycle games will start looking like that.
Right now you get an average off roading game that looks nothing like the renders. For $600, I'd want those graphics now...
me @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:45PM
LoL morons actually thought the game would look like the trailer? Unfortunately for you trolls it's still the bext looking race game in existance.
ChrisL @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:46PM
"32. Not trying to induce any flames but am I the only person who thought 'Wow, excitetruck for PS3.'"
That's exactly what I was thinking watching the footage. I actually walked by a PS3 display the other day that I guess was running this (first one I'd seen not locked up) and I thought it was a new version of ATV offroad fury. Very underwhelmed, I like how they do slo-mo on the crashes to show off the leet ragdoll . . . so 2002.
Excite Truck goes way faster though :)
Matt @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:49PM
I had the displeasure of being forced to play this dull piece of shit for 10 minutes while waiting for some loser to finish YYZ on GH2 the other day while I was waiting for some meds at walmart... It's definitely not much better than excitetruck and proves that ps3 owners apparently love the taste of bullshit and crow.
Optimus Prime @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:53PM
You guys can rant all you want; CGI ads are here to stay because they drive sales and get people excited.
Its like people who buy 10 megapixel camera cell phones with plastic lenses that cant resolve past vga. Or, when mp3s are called CD quality. Or, people who say that the wiimote is 1:1 (and thus, ducking behind couches and pillars are mimicked in-game).. its all marketing and its a proven strategy.
If i were in advertising i would do it too; and what are you going to do about? Rant and bitch on Joystiq?
I havent played MotorStorm yet (obviously); but, come on, Excite Truck? Its fun for 5 minutes and only more if you are under 8 years old or have ADD and like bright colours.

If your going to mock the intelligence of others, perhaps you should learn how to spell "best" properly. Secondly, I'm fairly certain nobody who visits a site like this honestly expected the game to look like the target renders, it's the mere fact that Sony flat out lied and conned the consumer into buying their product.
It's like saying, "Buy my all new white meat chicken breast" and giving you chopped up beef shards inside the package.
Milkshake @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:55PM
I love it when people say its just the launch games, maybe they will get better in the future. Maybe people could be forgiven for thinking the visuals are going to look that good after seeing movies like that at E3. Now the dust hast settled its seems clear to me that if the PS3 was really going to be that powerful that the launch games would run at least as smooth as the 360. Given the amount of hype Sony said the system should piss all over everything. Seriously top end PC’s are cutting edge they cost a hell of a lot more and I don’t see anything on the horizon in the PC field that suggests we are anywhere near the images shown in that E3 target render
MoonfirePewPEwPEw @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:57PM
Just like most here, I played the demo kiosk at my local retailer, and was unimpressed. I never bought into Sony's BS Propaganda, but I was expecting something that looked somewhat close to Gears, not marginally better than PGR3.
Also the gameplay is SLOW, and by slow I mean fucking slow as I felt like I was in slow motion at times. Compared to how fast and thrilling Excite Truck is on the Wii, this is a major letdown.
And lastly, it looked like it was only doing 30 fps, which is pretty sad overall. I never really hated a company so much until now, I hope Sony burns just like Enron.
Matt @ Dec 2nd 2006 11:57PM
@40: I think you meant to say "It's only fun for less than 5 minutes if you have ADD" since, having ADD, one would be LESS inclined to play the same game for any amount of time... but i guess that's the least of the problems with your rant... i could also bring up the fact that you're ranting on a weblog about rants on a weblog and that mp3s can be CD quality and that there are no 10MP cameraphones... but I'm not a dick...
ok, I'm a dick :P

#24 - LOL Optimus, boy are you grasping at straws.
It quite funny you trying to help sony squirm there way out of this one. 'Look the Goodyear blimp' *run sony* LOL. So your excuse for sony passing off pre rendered footage as in game graphics is
"It no different than Nintendo showing their ads with people flailing their limbs everywhere, ducking behind couches, hiding behind pillars, etc."
HAAHAHAH. Your a funny guy Optimus, although i don't think that was your intention. Anyway who say people can't do this (ie flail arms, duck behind couches etc)? As long as you stay within the sensor bars range then doing those extreme actions should be no problem, you DON'T have to do that nor will it make that huge difference when playing a game (although it will help keep you immersed in a game), but its not something that is out of the Wii remotes capabilities. On the other hand the pre rendered motorstorm/killzone CGI passed as in game graphics is complete and utter sony bull$#!T. Motor storm looks NOTHING like its E3 2005 video suggested!!!
Motor storms graphics don't even come close and i bet killzones gonna be the same. So your pathetic attempt at a comparison are as laughable as the years worth of bull$#!t sony calls PR.

YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS. I'd say PGR3 is the best looking race game in existence- Which happened to be a 360 launch title... A YEAR ago.
Boris Shubinsky @ Dec 3rd 2006 12:13AM
I've played a handful of games, including Motorstorm and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I can honestly say to please hand me my 360 controller back and sign me up for a Wii.
- The framerates on both games are garbage. Absolute garbage. That's what Sony gets for going with a processor not designed for gameplay. Great for playing those videos of their lies.
- Although it is most likely personal preference, the lack of rumble and the overall design of the PS controller gives me handcramps.
- It's LOUD. Like, freaking loud. Out of the 2 EB games I frequent regularly (I buy/trade a lot of games, as I run a personal gaming website), all of the employees I speak to on a daily basis all have commented how the PS3 causes more noise than the 360.
- It's hot. I could feel the heat being blown out by just standing beside it. Can't wait for all the recalls from the transistors being melted due to some consoles having incorrectly applied thermal paste.
