Sid Meier keeping eye on Civilization for consoles
In a recent interview with Gamespot, Sid Meier, the man who built an empire with Civilization, says a version of the strategy masterpiece may finally make its way onto consoles. While promoting Civilization Chronicles on Gamespot, a compilation set of Civilization games I - IV, Meier responds to EA's successful porting of classic PC genres like RTS' to consoles by saying, "Yes. I think the latest consoles have the processing power to deliver fun experiences with the bigger strategy games. It's definitely something we've been keeping our eyes on and we'll let you know where we'll go from here."PC Civilization addicts can still seek treatment, but for those who think quitting is for losers, Meier says they'll keep making more Civ as long as the fans want it, he also says they are looking into digital distribution for Civ IV campaigns and other "ideas." No announcement of a Civilization V. Love the Civilization, now let's talk about that sequel to Alpha Centauri ...

If it forces Microsoft to allow a mouse on the 360 I am all for it!

What incredible timing for this article. I've been playing Civ 4 and it's Warlords expansion pretty actively for the last few days. It's actually the first time I've played one of the Civ games, though I played Alpha Centauri around it's release.
On that note, I would -really- love to see a new Alpha Centauri release. Even the same game ported with better graphics would be fine with me, though of course it would be awesome to see some gameplay changes.

God I hope that Civ never goes to a console again. It was already on the PS1 and that game was a disgrace to the great game that Civilization 2 was.

Civ on NES and SNES was actually a pretty good port, the game worked well with a controller, except for the diagonal movements, the newer Civ games would be much harder, Alpha Centauri would work well on consoles.
no need for a mouse in CIV. the entire game can be played with just a keyboard.
all they need to do is change the dpad from move up/down/left/right to a selection field.

Civ II on the PS1 wasn't awful...it just had a steep learning curve because the control scheme sucked. Once you overcame that hurdle, it wasn't all that bad. I didn't have a PC at the time and it was a decent substitute. I've been playing the series since the first one came out (Had it for my Amiga 500), and I can't really think of anything bad to say about it except for the controls.
Here's the Gamespot review of it:

GameRankings.com has it at 82%

When will they ever release a sequel for Alpha Centari? That game rocked! I even liked it better than a lot of the Civ games I've played.
Another game that would be cool to see is a Civ game in which you continue on to Alpha Centauri and manage your empire across two worlds.

Actually I have what was marketed "Civ III" on my cell phone. It looks and plays more like the original Civilization, but it's still a lot of fun. I can't tell you how much time I've waisted in meetings on that thing!

The mere thought of Civ coming to any console is enough to get me lathered up. I agree with the earlier poster that the DS is the ideal console. The stylus removes many control hurdles.

The super nintendo version of Civilization worked with the mouse that came with Mario Paint. Was great.

"When will they ever release a sequel for Alpha Centari?"
Alpha Centauri is an EA property, so 2k Games would have to get it from them if Firaxis had any interest in pursuing a sequel.
