Impressive PS3 ad spoof promoting Wii
59
Taking aim at the PS3 ad promoting the motion sensitivity of the SIXAXIS controller, this very impressive spoof not only makes fun, but actually ends up being a better advertisement. It's about time we started seeing fan-made videos using two random Asian businessmen to promote the PS3 like in the Wii ads ... oh wait, Sony already tried that.

For a fan-made video, that's better than so much of official company advertisements.
I'd laugh if this ad inspired Nintendo to make a glossy black Wii... I have to admit, I think I'd want one from just how sweet this video was.

That ad is not better than the PS3 version. The PS3 version has an unexpected twist. Besides, that ad miscomunicates what the Wii is all about. The ad is sophisticated and I think it's fairly obvious that Nintendo just isn't. That ad is stylish and the GC or the Wii are definately places where you won't find an abundance of stylish games.....

@32_Footsteps,
The black glossy Wii was the first design, back when it was the Revolution. I'm sure Nintendo will release it at some time (it was actually supposed to be a second option at launch, but they changed their mind when they got into production).
@CitizenGeek,
That's got to be satire. Nintendo games are always more colorful and stylish. Look at Zelda:TP (which is drab for a Zelda game; ok, look at Wind Waker ;)

CitizenGeek: So the original PS3 version is better just because it has an unexpected twist? So if at the end of the movie Titanic, if Nazi Ninjas suddenly came out of the iceberg and killed everyone on the Titanic before the ship hit the iceberg, then that would make the movie infinitely that much better?
Not to mention it's a commercial. It doesn't matter if there's a complex story, surprise ending, metaphors, or anything...because all it's designed to do is sell you a product. If it fails to sell that product to someone who was not previously aware of said product then it is still a bad commercial. In fact, lacing a commercial with metaphors and the such can be a horrible thing because then instead of selling a product you're just confusing a nation with weird metaphors that not everyone will get.
And finally, this is just a parody, there's no real need to start comparing the two. It's like saying you prefer Weird Al's "Like a Surgeon" to the original,"Like a virgin." This commercial was made to poke humor at the original PS3 commercial, not be better than it.

Calm down, White Rabbit...
If we're just discussing the quality of the commercials, not the systems themselves, then I think the original PS3 version is better. The eggs crash into the wall, then black birds smash out, and the SIXAXIS logo is displayed and twisted. Sorry, I just think that's cooler than a whole bunch of eggs getting blasted to fragments and then one getting sliced.
But that's just me. I think Nintendo should stick to their "WOULDJOOUA LIKEAH TO PLHAY???" ad campaign. It suits their brand better.

that psuedo ad actually does a wonderful job of expressing one of Wii's biggest strengths and PS3's weaknesses. Rumble.
the recoil shown in the ad when the controller "fires" isn't just for show, Wii games are always using the rumble feedback creatively, even in menus. its huge part of the Wii experience.
without haptic feedback, theres an enormous disconnect when you're twirling the Sixaxis around in a game. there's just input, nevermind that your car just ran into a wall or landed that big jump. you're just moving an empty piece of plastic around, and thats exactly how it feels.

Now that was an awesome commercial... although not very insightful. Wii's commercials are excellent commercials. They go straight to the point, fun for everyone ( which is nintendo's purpose). To truly understand wtf ps3's ads mean you must be a hardcore gamer.

Holy crap thats the most awesome idea ive heard for a long time. do you mind if i use it for my games level design project? we have to base it on ninjas, and freaking nazi ninjas on the titanic has SO much potential for win.

For all those hoping for a black Wii, those pictures came out before Steve Jobs took over Nintendo. I doubt they've completely dropped the concept, especially since the Gamecube had multiple colors.

To be sure, the ad was slick (parody status not withstanding), but strictly viewed as a Wii ad, it's terrible. It goes against everything even the name "Wii" is supposed to represent. #11 was right, and it doesn't take a fanboy to see it - I haven't bought a Nintendo system since the SNES, but I do working marketing.
Seems to me that the people most impressed with it just like the shiny black thing.

I'm beginning to think that every over-the-top comment degrading one console or another is actually posted by company advertising shills who adhere to the ages-old marketing practice of "treat your consumers as if they're 5th graders."

Actually, I disgree. You don't need to be hardcore gamer to understand what it means when the sixaxis smashes eggs against a wall and birds come out - you just need to have a good feel for pretentious BS. Being a hardcore gamer will not help you to pull out the (obviously) deep meanings in a PS3 commercial.
There is a point at which metaphor and and symbolism just stops being art, loses its meaning , and becomes pretentious crap - the PS3 commercials happily jump across that line.

That's OK... The blue light hardly ever comes on. It blinks when you turn it on and when WiiConnect24 d/l's an update during standby. That's it. Which leads me to ask: How come every single promotional picture of the Wii, be it from Nintendo or retailers like Wal*Mart/Target/et al., has the light on? I flipped through the manual thinking mine was defective when I first got it, all 'cause I'd seen the pics with the snazzy blue light. Now that I think about it, I'm surprised this hasn't been addressed as an official "Joystiq Wii Annoyance." Seems like it's just the kind of petty non-issue they'd bitch about.

[sigh]
People call CitizenGeek a fanboy because he said the commercial was inappropriate for the Wii because it isn't sophisticated (like the PS3) and Nintendo doesn't produce stylish games (like the PS3). Personally, I'm cool with him liking the PS3 ad's artsiness, which I personally think is just bizarre and not nearly as cool as the PS9 ads for the PS2, but when he resorts to saying that nothing Nintendo does is as good as Sony... well, that's a fanboy.
