Xbox Live units? Is this the new name of the Xbox 360? :P This guy obviously doesn't get much hands on time with the Xbox; he's way too caught up in the financial side of things. I bet he's one happy camper now that they are making money on each 360 sold.

It's just some company employees being enthusiastic about their console hoping to sell 10 million units...

Nothing wrong here...

I'd say it's not outside the realm of possibility given the recent release of quality titles (Viva, Rainbow Six, Gears). As has been reiterated time and time again on this site, the lack of PS3 consoles and poor overall launch scores will also likely push buyers to MS.

Personal anecdotal evidence - Three friends of mine have decided to go Wii60 based on seeing the XBox Live experience with Gears and the Lost Planet demo after the initial decision to stick with Wii only.

hmm thats interesting!

i certainly think its possible, unlike sony the have the units to do so and unlike sony there is some killer 360 games out now

i think if microsoft produced the right bundles at the right price they might just sell 10 million

It seems like it would be a bad sign when the CEO of your company doesn't even know the name of a product that you're losing billions of dollars on.

In terms of units actually bought by consumers, we're looking at 2.9 million in North America at the end of October 2006:

http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4326&Itemid=2

The consumer sales for November will be released Thursday, but this is the first peek at them:

http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Games_And_Devices/Console?Article=/Games%20And%20Devices/Console/G8D9F8E3

"Microsoft apparently shifted 468,000 units, whilst Industry business boffin Bob Austrian (Banc of America Securities) had predicted sales of 700,000."

So that would put us at 3.37 million in NA.

Total sales in Japan are 191,000 as of last week:
http://www.vgcharts.org/japweekly.php

So that's about 3.56 million not counting Europe (where sales to retail had reached 1 million in June).

They may ship 10 million ("sell" to retail) by the end of the year, but sales to consumers will be well below that.

The next-gen and nexgenwars discrepancies (both claim to be "sold" numbers) in posts 3 and 4 are exactly why I don't give a damn about console sales as long as I like the system.

The 360 has a fucking fantastic lineup right now, and you're missing out if you don't own one. I'm assuming based on Nintendo's track record that it shouldn't be more than a year or so before you can say the same thing about the Wii.

If you opt for (and somehow find) a PS3, well...good for you, hope you like it. I'm not too confident in that platform.

It's not too hard...considering that they are already at 8 million right now, 2 million more is not difficult at all. Besides, even if they only reach 9 million, that's still amazing.

Remember that this 'hope' isn't at all what Msft promised in the first place. Gates himself said in May that they would have sold 10m units 'by the time the competition launched'--i.e., November.
These types of shifting benchmarks recall a certain foreign policy misadventure...

Apparently those numbers are not the true numbers

("Microsoft apparently shifted 468,000 units, whilst Industry business boffin Bob Austrian (Banc of America Securities) had predicted sales of 700,000.")

See Joystiq.com for more info

([Update: Apparently this is a false story that has been circulating the web chain-letter style. Let's wait until the official NPD numbers come out and add them to the weekly Japanese numbers.] )

NexGenWars takes the interesting approaching of not providing sources for their data.
Take with a grain of salt..

In North America you can look at NPD sales, and in Japan there's Enterbrain / Media Create.

AC:

Your numbers are a bit off. You're mixing an article that states US sales only with numbers that have already been proven false (the 468,000 to 700,000 numbers... Joystiq just covered this hoax the other day) and then claiming that they are North America numbers. Canada is included in NA rememeber. The article also isn't clear on whether those NPD numbers (US only) are for 2006 or are total sales of 360 units since its launch.

Furthermore, MS, Sony and Nintendo all use "shipped" numbers as sales numbers, not just MS. This holiday season the shipped numbers will match actual sold numbers for Sony and Nintendo only because of the extremely limited supply. MS is hoping to be the first to ship 10 million units, simple as that.

I don't think the "lack" of PS3's this Christmas is going to push people to buy Xbox360 when they were intending to buy the PS3.

This is based upon the simple fact that many people have waited for a long time for the PS3 and I don't think a few more months is going to hurt especially with the PS2 still releasing a great lineup of games.

Don't get me wrong, my family has an X360 as our only next-gen console right now, and as of now it seems like the best offering, but it seems like MS has squandered the year long advantage it had. They should have sold more consoles. I guess it would have been really hard since until recently they had only one killer app (Oblivion) which as a single-player RPG, has limited appeal to a lot of people. Now they have at least two (add Gears of War) which adds FPS and online multiplayer appeal. They should be selling consoles like mad.

Vista (It's sorta like OS X but not really)

"Not really" in this case means that OS X runs on about three different hardware configurations and Vista will run on hundreds of different configurations. Advantage, freedom of choice.

You are a morron, as simple as that, we are not looking at 2.9 million in North America at the end of October 2006 you morron, those are only US sales not including Canada, also those estimates only include mayor retailers leaving alot of minor retailers out of the picture thats why is an estimate.

and then your leaving Europe and the rest of the planet out makes your post even mose baseless leaving out Latin America, Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan, China , Australia and Iam not going to continue because you are an ignorant that probably does not know about the rest of the world

Actually Nintendo is the ONLY company that reports the number of units sold to CONSUMERS, not to retail. Sony and M$ use retail numbers. That's why everyone is saying the PSP is getting slaughtered by the DS. I read recently that the DS is consistently selling out in Japan.
That nexgenwars website is a joke. I checked it one day, weeks ago. It had Wii @ 500k units, next day Wii was @ 300k units. DOn't know what the deal with that site is, but I believe it is bogus. Especially since Wii had 400k units disappear launch day...

@ AC. OK YOU REALLY GOT YOUR NUMBERS WRONG!

Xbox 360 has sold 2.9 million in USA ONLY through October. In November the analyst say the will sell another 750,000. That puts them at 3.65 million. In December they forcasted another 1.5 million sold to 2 million. That puts them between 5.65 million and 6.65 million in the US ALONE!

That does not include Canada, Mexico, and of course the other major gaming powerhouse....EUROPE!

Bottomline is that Microsoft will easily sell 10,000,000 by the end of this year. This is a huge feat considering the system has not even had its first price drop. Imagine how this system is going to sell once the core is at $199.00 and the premium is at $299.00.

I feel this is an impressive feat nonetheless and am amazed that it has sold so well without Halo 3 on shelves.

Then again the games have been great for it.

If you dont own it you are really missing out.

@Spartacus, that is incorrect. Nintendo always and has only reported units sold to consumers. They're the only ones who do that, btw, even Sega reported shipped numbers instead of sold.

There are a combination of reasons that Nintendo reports sold numbers rather than shipped, mostly originating in the fact that Nintendo started selling cards and many other things before they got into video games, and it is a very conservative company. VERY CONSERVATIVE. Because they are also the primary software developer for their platform, they consider it in their best interests to know how many customers actually have the console (rather than how many are in retail channel), so they can decide the optimal units of a new software to release. Their internal financial analysts have been making those kind of estimations for 20+ years now, and it's likely they have a better idea of what games will sell how many units than anyone else in the industry.
