Parents trust ESRB, by the numbers

A recent survey conducted by Activision found that 68% of parents polled* believe that the ESRB is rating games appropriately. But only 52% confirmed that rating is the most important factor when considering game purchases for their children. Still, a staggering 84% of parents reported to be aware of the rating system; and 79% play close attention to it.
Activision's survey also revealed that 74% of parents have accepted gaming into family life, with 58% calling themselves gamers. A strong minority (49%) even admitted sneaking in playing time with their kids' games.
