someone nailed it on the head...

ninteno will NEVER make a service like this because nintendo fans will continue to shell out 5 bucks a pop for 20 yr old games year after year after year...why charge less when the sheep keep coming???

when people smarten up and realize 5 bucks for an unchanged version on SMB is highway robbery THEN..and onyl then will nintendo even FATHOM changing anything.

then again i dont blame'em

thats wat 20 years of brand equity gets you.

"* Retaining your game purchases in the event your Wii breaks
* Transferring the titles over to the next generation Nintendo console"

Dammit, Joystiq. You have to stop pulling things out of your ass like this.

Subscription-based would work for me...

Anyone remember Sega Channel? You pay a monthly fee and get so many games to play for a month? That was the stuff right there. If Nintendo would start subscription-based right now and keep adding 4 games each week, people would pay for it, I guarantee!

I don't own a Wii yet, and I don't plan on buying until I can find one Used next year with DVD playback. when that comes around, I still probably won't buy VC because I'm borderline broke and my money will go on the Wii games.

"47. Actually, I DO think 99 cents is too much for a song on iTunes. Think about what you're buying....no Walmart, no CD, no packaging, just a file. So if you're cutting out the middle-man and all of the carbon materials, why would I pay the same for that song as I would if it were on an actual CD?"

Apple has to give about 69 cents worth of that sale to the record companies. The remaining pocket change goes to maintaining the store, honestly I cannot imagine how songs can get any cheaper. Also, the "cds" you buy there come with printable inserts so you can make it look like a real cd.

Things to consider for people complaining about the VC.

Nintendo has still only launched in 2 territories so far. I think, probably, they're mostly focused on launching the console successfully right now. Why do you think they've pushed back the News, Weather & Opera channels? And you think that's all Nintendo has planned? If you've read any of the 'Iwata Asks' interviews on the wii site, you'll know they have 5 or 6 channels that they had planned that were never brought up, and don't exist yet, because they needed to get the launch taken care of.

Realistically, you can't expect anything much from the VC or the online service until January. After January 31st, if you still wish to complain, Nintendo has no defense. The console is launched and running, and they've had time to get their act together. If they haven't by then, there's a problem.

As far as a subscription service, I know Nintendo considered it, and it would be nice to offer it, cause there are a lot of games I'd like to try out before I buy them (a VC demo service would beat a subscription service by a factor of 10 IMO), but they'll probably avoid it because of how it would affect their 3rd party licensing arrangements.

The problem with VC pricing is simple - Sony's selling PS1 games, downloads that clock in the hundreds of megs, for $6. Methinks that Nintendo is making a pretty penny or two or hundreds per each download, eh?

Just calm down. Nintendo tempered the initial selection because if they have the Japan-level selection available right at launch, in MID NOVEMBER, with what, 20 third party titles developed by partners, selling at retailers throughout the Christmas season, those retailers and third party developers are going to be pissed the hell off, don't you think? AFTER Christmas, they can bring out the bigger titles.

Also, if anyone thinks that $5 for SMB or Zelda 1 is a ripoff, that's a really sad fact. $6 for 5 PLAYER WIRELESS BOMBERMAN is the best deal in gaming right now.

The problem with the VC is that old games are not that much fun. Sure, we remember them as amazing, but play them now and you'll be bored in five minutes! Maybe the VC will get better when they get some new content on there. XBLA gets it right - a few old games that have stood the test of time, mixed with new games like Geometry Wars.
