Writing original content about gaming
Faith Naked, "The Girl Gamer," has written up her tips on how struggling video game bloggers can come up with original content, which will then be passed around the intertubes like a plague. It's a pretty nice little compact list with each reasonable subhead hiding a paragraph that could get you in some serious trouble. We can agree with almost every single subhead, except for the last one and we're sure Faith was joking about that one too -- we really hope she was. What follows is a few ideas off Faith's list with excerpts, see the full paragraphs at her site:
- Original News Stories: "Tired of always being the last to hear about a big news story, well stop whining, and start making your own. Instead of waiting for the next industry person to get a drunk drinking charge, find your own video game designer, get him drunk and put him behind the wheel yourself. Bonus points for being the other car he hits."
- Video Game Crafts: " We all love to read and post little stories about a cute Mario blanket made by hand, or a cross stitched Master Chief picture. Well instead of looking for the next cute little pillow with Kirby on it, make it, damn it."
- Insider Game Information: "Find all the game developer companies in your area and start hanging around the bars near them."
- First Game Reviews: "Break into the studio months in advance and steal the beta versions of the game."
- Make Stuff Up: "If all else fails."

I know I am probably being a jerk, and that is fine, but seriously bloging on a blog that is bloging about other blogs is dumb.

The article is not very original.
Her list describes every single videogame blog online.

There is nothing wrong with making stuff up and sometimes you get the added bonus of actually being right. Making stuff up on a blog is more like guessing. Don't let facts stand in your way, take a stab in the dark you just might hit something.

If you read the Apple rumour sites or certain gaming blogs, you'll see a good few writers who do just make things up from time to time.
Definatly one of the worst practises if your blogging about games/gadgets/computers.

@ 1 Meta-Blogging for the win. There's a lot of it goes on on Wordpress and Blogger and such.
@ 2 Heh heh heh.

This reminds me a lot of those get-rich-quick schemes advertised on early morning infomercials. "I made millions and you can too! Just send me $50 to receive my pamphlet!" And the pamphlet extols the virtues of selling get-rich-quick scheme pamphlets.
This list would fall under "Make stuff up" I suppose.

Having "Naked" in her name probably isn't helping to fight stereotypes in the the whole Girl Gamers cause.
DannyHibiki @ Dec 6th 2006 9:12AM
You too can be an attention whore! Ask me how!
majortom @ Dec 6th 2006 10:12AM
So how's that vagina of yours, faith? Still garnering you attention despite the fact that you lack any observable writing flair or a functional sense of humour?
Oh, good. Glad to hear things are working out for it.
I mean you.

Incredibly weak article aside, you have to admit "Faith Naked" would be an awesome name for a rock band.
Firegirl @ Dec 6th 2006 1:10PM
Wow, lame article! And I have to agree with Scott's comment above. Not all girl gamers care to make everyone think we walk around naked while playing video games. Ick.
Faith @ Dec 6th 2006 5:14PM
Okay, first of all, the article is meant to be a joke. If you didn't see that from my first point of causing your own drunk driving accident for a game developer, then you missed the whole point of the article. I don't want any one to actual do any of these things.
Secondly, I dropped the Naked from my name a long time ago, Joystiq just chooses to keep refering to me as such. If you look at Destructoid.com both my name and avatar were switched to be more neutral on the whole "girl gamer thing".

FaithClothed, it is just that this article posted was as "Writing original content about gaming" and, infact, was not original at all. To be fair, probably not many people actually read your entire article and are just frustrated that it actually made it on to joystiq.
I tried to read it, but I had to stop because I am a "struggle video game blog [reader]."
