Download Tekken 5 on PS3, for PS3
According to GAF, Famistu is reporting that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection will be offered as a downloadable PlayStation 3 title. The PS3 version will be an arcade port (Dark Resurrection was also released on PSP) with new content, including a playable Jinpachi. The game will also be enhanced for high definition displays.Release date and cost have not yet been disclosed, though Dark Resurrection will almost certainly exceed Xbox Live Arcade's current peak price ($15). Still, Tekken 5 has a bit more to offer than the likes of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat 3, no? Should Microsoft be concerned?

I LOVE TEKKEN 5! If I had I PS3, I would be creaming myself right now. I'm excited enough as it is. figures that someone good for Sony comes from 3rd party...but good for them anyway.
Paco From Del Taco @ Dec 7th 2006 2:07AM
You should add that the game now runs in full 1080p on the PS3 as well!!
potato @ Dec 7th 2006 2:34AM
Should MS be concerned? Hell yes. I'm a 360 owner and I think this is a great idea. Start putting larger, more substantial titles on live dammit!
That would require them to release a larger HDD, but it's about damned time I say. They'll have to do it to support the TV/movie XBLM thing anyway.
There's really not much compelling on XBLA these days. Geometry Wars, Small Arms, a couple other games here and there. Way too many crappy ports of old games that cost too much. Give us original content dammit.
DG @ Dec 7th 2006 2:42AM
You'd like to think that Tekken 3 is somehow superior to SFII, but you'd be wrong.
reppy @ Dec 7th 2006 2:49AM
I hate the idea of downloading full sized games. If I'm paying next gen prices, I'd prefer an old gen style of owning it.. like, the actual game in my shelf. Thank you.
dolemite @ Dec 7th 2006 3:04AM
If the price is not too high, somewhere south of 25 bucks then I'm all for it. Would have to start download and go to bed while it finishes, but its all good.
Dylan @ Dec 7th 2006 3:36AM
Sooner or later (more likely sooner, as in around the end of this console cycle-ish), all you "I prefer to own an actual game I purchased in physical form, to sit on my shelf" folks are going to be seen as retro gaming kooks, in the same class as audiophiles who cling on to their vinyl because they like the "feel" of it. Really, it makes no logical or practical sense in this day and age to have to leave my house and and go to a store to purchase an object which contains nothing but intangible media.
Pyronite @ Dec 7th 2006 3:47AM
"Really, it makes no logical or practical sense in this day and age to have to leave my house and and go to a store to purchase an object which contains nothing but intangible media."
1) You cannot trade downloaded games you do not like for returned credit or credit towards other games. You also cannot trade them with friends or transport them from location to location (unless you're going to move the entire system).
2) Physical media provides a better format for long-term access. (I.e. unless your shelf space becomes full and you're a neat freak, you'll always have it available worry and download-free.)
3) With the downloaded material of the Xbox 360 and PS3, do you really think they're going to give you credit towards Tekken 5 (or any other game) on their successors? Physical media provides an easier method of backwards compatibility and, as such, less wasted money when systems rotate out of fashion.
I could go on, as you might imagine. If the only reasoning you have is that "it makes no sense to leave my house," I suggest you familiarize yourself with online retailers (and consider more than just that single point).
Werbal @ Dec 7th 2006 12:47PM
Nice to see I'm not the only one ready to part with discs just yet.
Physical media has a permanence that dowloads lack. Let's say you've got a half-dozen games on your PS3 and it breaks. Oop! I'm willing to bet Sony's not going to just GIVE you those games again for free.
If I'm paying a lot of money for a game, I was something more tangible than just harddrive space.
DirtDevil @ Dec 7th 2006 5:57AM
I am less excited for a fighting game that does not support online play. Don't get me started with the lag excuses, Tecmo did a solid job with DOA4.
Embassy @ Dec 7th 2006 6:08AM
wait wait..is this ONLINE tekken..???..or just regular ol' tekken..??...cuz if this doesnt feature online play its seems pretty useless to me.
DBX00 @ Dec 7th 2006 11:42AM
I'm putting in my bet that games like this will cost $14.99. That would round off the title selections at PS1 - $5.99, arcade type titles - $9.99, full games/ports - $14.99 to $19.99.
DirtDevil @ Dec 7th 2006 7:58AM
No online play Embassy, do not get your hopes up for the fighting elite will not support online play.
Earl @ Dec 7th 2006 8:35AM
Pyronite made some excellent points. Downloading games, opposed to physical purchase, is not in my near future. Wow, people sure seem to be lazy. "Why should I leave my home to get a game?"Seriously? No job to go to? School? Food from a store? I mean, I pick up the majority of my games from Best Buy on my way home from work/school.
On another note: what happened to the whole BD is necessary for video game crap?
I don't want to download 20 something gigs for days...
Although downloading games does support my suggestion that Sony releases a version of the PS3 WITHOUT the Blu-Ray player. Just like the released the PS2 without the HDD slot. I would definitely buy a PS3 if it came without a BD. Two reasons: 1) price will drop by $300, at least. 2) I am not forced to pay for another proprietary format by Sony.
Yashar @ Dec 7th 2006 9:03AM
WHAT!!?? SF2 and UMK3's menu screen alone is worth ten times more than Tekken5. All Tekken games combined (Along with T5: DR for ps3) offer nothing compared to waht SF and MK can offer. Shame on you Joystiq...
The Realist @ Dec 7th 2006 9:12AM
Wait a sec...
If Blu-Ray is needed to deliver "next-gen" games, then how on earth can these same games be downloaded?
Please, someone explain why the discs have to be 25-50 gb, yet in the same breath we can download full fledged titles? Smells like more Sony bullshit to me.
Buckshot @ Dec 7th 2006 9:34AM
Blanka FTW!!!!!
Asian Dude @ Dec 7th 2006 10:00AM
Online play will kill arcade. Tekken quality will go down(not that it hasn't been)
Feanor @ Dec 7th 2006 10:25AM
#14 - Tekken 5 is basically a PS2 game. Well done if your goal was to look like a complete moron.
Jayslacks @ Dec 7th 2006 10:19AM
I have never liked the idea of downloadable movies or games. If we, the gaming community, agree to allow Sony to do this, then they will lock the games the systems. No trading. No getting rid of it. No selling it. That is exactly what Sony wants. They want to make gamers buy their system, get invested in it, and then have ten games on a hard drive that you don't like and can't get rid of without losing your money. I say we should all support the purchasing of games from stores. It's easier, it's faster, it's simplier, and it's tried and true.
DirtDevil @ Dec 7th 2006 10:44AM
@ #18, Yeah Tekken 5 was released for the PS2 but what they are releasing for the PS3 is an updated version, with some minor tweaks and balances to the gameplay and adding some new content like 2 new playable fighters.
I have a feeling that Sony wants a stable fighting game for the PS3 in order to satiate fighting fans waiting for the next installment of the Tekken series. For me downloading is OK, but, some prefer a physical medium to have games.
Cuja @ Dec 7th 2006 11:30AM
The original has issues with BC on the PS3. The DL version should have them issues fix plus better load times off HD.
Norm @ Dec 7th 2006 11:29AM
"9. I am less excited for a fighting game that does not support online play. Don't get me started with the lag excuses, Tecmo did a solid job with DOA4."
I'm calling BS on this one. Besides, DOA4 isn't even a fighting game, so says the fighting game community and Itagaki himself. its more like rock paper scissors with boobs.
cyberfrog @ Dec 7th 2006 12:50PM
They are apparently a couple of reasons that tekken dr was released onto the psp and now the ps3. You can argue that sony was trying to use dr to sell more psps and ps3s, and that's probably true to a point. Another arguement is that arcade owners were quite annoyed when tekken 5 got released on the ps2 so soon after it's arcade release. The arcade scene dried up and the arcade owners did not make their money back. That being said, I wish they would release tekken dr for the ps2, since it clearly could perform on that system. Do the same thing VF did with evolution, just make it cheaper and people will buy it. In my opinion, not releasing dr to the ps2 was pretty much a slap in the face the fans.

Haha, we all wish! If it does come out here, it will not be online. Namco loves to shaft the USA.
Dr. John A. Vengeance @ Dec 7th 2006 1:56PM
"Should Microsoft be concerned?"
No, because Tekken is a piece of shit.
Concerned about Virtua Fighter 5? Hell yeah. But Tekken? Are you kidding me?
dsub @ Dec 7th 2006 11:03PM
but we need blu-ray so that we can have a format that will hold all those HD textures and CGI sequences. Right Sony? I mean, afterall, your games are getting to be over 20GB it's size, right Sony? So how am I supposed to fit a game like Tekken 5 onto a 20GB HDD, when all your games supposedly require the massive 50GB capacity of blu-ray? Huh Sony?
DirtDevil @ Dec 7th 2006 3:44PM
@ 20, We can argue for so long what is a true fighting game and what is not. It seems that people prefer one fighting game series to another because they dig the game mechanics of the game. At least DOAU and DOA4 has an option for online play, which is great for some. Haters will hate DOA because fans of the series have been enjoying the online play for years now, you can go on and shove your elite fighting claims to your *ss.
Jaguarandine @ Dec 8th 2006 4:37AM
This is great for the competitive Tekken (that is, playing for money) community since Tekken 5.0 has long been discovered unbalanced. This btw, will NOT have online play. It will be a straight port of the arcade, gameplay-wise. If you like Tekken and haven't played the arcade version of Tekken 5 DR, I suggest you run to your local arcade (if you have one) right now. It's great.

Have made themselves the biggest retards of all time.
Tekken has been around since before DOA, and being only under-parred to Virtual Fighter for the Saturn. Virtual fighter sucked nasty too for that saturn which I owned ( For those times, Killer instinct ftw Arcade and consel. ) and I'm pretty sure The people saying shit about tekken where the xbox owners stuck to their virtual fighter- too much pride to get a ps2.
As for the Blu-ray discs and downloadable Media and games. ACCEPT THE FUTURE. You're gonna end up like your parents- " Whas dis nintendo 50, I can't cope with it because you download all the games and use your brain to do it instead of a controller or physical hardware to grip, It's Madness!" Stfu and stop being such a hippie.
DEEZNUTZ @ Dec 8th 2006 12:45PM
Im a 360 owner and I say MS should be a bit wary. Gives us a bigger HD and some more CAPCOM fighters (ALPHA SERIES, THIRD STRIKE, MVC2). Then you can call it an ARCADE!!!
Nice move SONY...
DeShaun @ Dec 8th 2006 2:32PM
Hmm, should microsoft be concerned about a title they never would have had in the first place? No. If the trend continues and extends to games that microsoft would have to release as tangible media...then yes, they should be concerned.
The fighting game argument...so funny. I wasn't a Tekken fan for a very long time. Mainly because I could take a quick glance and see how unbalanced it was. DR is a vast improvement, and it's enjoyable. I still won't pick it over Virtua Fighter (unless of course it's VF3...ugh), but it's a solid series, and 10 years of incarnations should tell you something.
Online or not, DOA *is* rock paper scissors. DOA has one of the most technical fighting engines, probably only second to VF, but it goes to waste with that counter system. It's still entirely to easy to spaz your way through things. But whatever, this isn't a fighting game discussion.
Downloading media as a regular thing? Won't catch on like that right now. Think about services like itunes and all that stuff. In spite of being able to download whole albums, and the mass popularity of ipods, people STILL buy tangible records.
What would be awesome, is if you could download the game to an external HD, and then burn the image to a DVD/BD. Cooler still would be the ability for the PS3 to play said media once it's burned. It's a legit backup.
Omar Sayeed @ Dec 12th 2006 4:59PM
Don't even bother comparing Tekken with the Street Fighter series. Street Fighter started the scene, don't forget that.

Wow...#28...what an idiot. Tekken 5 is Tekken 5 not Tekken 6. Yes games like Tekken 6 will need the blu ray format because of everything you mentioned. Tekken 5 is not a trus PS3 game. So stfu.

32. - are you serious?
The big labels are saying that CDs are a thing of the past. Downloading is taking over the industry - in spite of some people (myself included) still buying music on CDs (mostly at Tower records during their GOING OUT OF BUSINESS sale).
Downloadable games are fantastic. Less time with the nerds at the game stores explaining the finer details of some game engine and more time trying out a demo I just downloaded to figure if I even want to buy the game in the first place.
Funny how people get so attached to some media that is easily scratched. I had my disk player replaced twice on my PS2 and remember having my PS1 upside down in its last days. I would love everything to run off my HD - that would be prime.
dubbz @ Mar 3rd 2007 11:42AM
i agree get a TB HDD (might as well spend the money)and download away for 1 the games might be cheaper, quicker load times, the hdd should be superior to disks that get scratched and finger printed, portable media granted the ps3 is huge but if 1 was to take the ps3 somewhere the games r right there
as long as we can download our purchased games indefinitly
