Use the Wii-mote in Mac OS X with DarwiinRemote

We've got no data to back up this claim, but we're going to guess that the majority of Wii owners are also Mac owners. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this flies directly in the face of statistics -- like a pile of bugs (no Windows pun intended) smashing into the aerodynamically ineffective windshield of common sense. But think about it. Elegant, white devices with nonsensical names ... it's a no-brainer. How else do we know? Both come with Bluetooth built-in. So, while Windows users are busy trying to figure out if their beige box supports Bluetooth, Mac users can get busy and download DarwiinRemote to control their Wii-Motes in Mac OS X.

Just because most PCs don't have BlueTooth built in does not mean majority of Wii owners are Mac owners, how dare you!

I am a wii owner and I hate Macs!

How about "Willing to pay a premium for inferior hardware." instead?
I kid, but please don't pollute Nintendo's good name with your blatant "mac-snobbery".
minus_273 @ Dec 8th 2006 9:48AM
also, unlike the windows version the licence for the mac wiii software does not say no jews allowed.

I'm working on a similar tool. The end goal is a menu bar app that lets you quickly pick a config (NES-mappings, mouse mode, whatever) for your favorite usage (cough emulators cough).

What was the point of writing this article for the 14th time again?

Seems like a few of you drank your haterade already today.

This is possibly the most nonsensical article Joystiq has ever posted. Why post an informative article when you can rile Apple, Windows and Nintendo fanboys all at the same time.

Doesn't seem that you know how many PC's are really sold compared to Mac's... MS is taking over the world!
RUSKULL @ Dec 8th 2006 11:19AM
Yeah, the Wii is about being white....
Basically what you are saying is "Hey, we know our statistics are BS, but we like ourselves enough to say that we are probably right."
Contradictions = 0 Credibility

I tried it and it works fairly well as a mouse pointer, but it doesn't work well with games like Unreal...yet.
DJ @ Dec 8th 2006 12:46PM
I tried it... and it's nifty. As people are quick to point out, it has a long way to go before its full potential is unleashed and all of our Macbook screens are doomed to an existance ducking flying Wii-motes as well... however, that's another issue. As someone who's "misplaced" his Apple Remote (read: have a powerbook G4 and needs to hack the OS to get Final Cut running sans remote support) this thing works great in that function.
Also, PC's suck because... well... there's more of them. Viva la revolution.

I am a lifelong Mac user and I hate the design of the Wii. Looks like a white gimcrack toaster.
Paul @ Dec 8th 2006 4:31PM
Up and down movement work pretty well, side to side however is a little awkward since it involves you twisting the remote rather than moving it left and right. Looking forward to the release of the pointer fix. Looks like it works great with the sensor bar on a computer
moofree @ Dec 8th 2006 3:07PM
Tried it on my G4 cube last night. Once you get it working, it works ok. It's unfiltered movement though, so double clicking is hell.
Marathon Aleph One (only game i have installed) crashed when I tried to play it while running DarwinRemote. I'll give it a few more days :)

ditto

Works fine on my hackintosh with a Bluetooth USB dongle. It really needs a UT or Quake 3 mod to wrap the cursor like Wii games, though...

To the Mac haters...
I have a Macbook Pro and XP installed through Parallels. Sure, the hardware is expensive, but show me another similarly priced notebook with the same build quality (all aluminium, built-in isight, bluetooth etc) and there'll be 100 other ugly Vaio, Toshibas, Dells, and HP notebooks. I can honestly say the Macbook Pro and Powerbook G4 are the only notebooks that I've ever been totally satisfied with.
Every single Win noteook I've had has been a nightmare, and now that OSX and XP can happily co-exist on the same machine - there is really no excuse. But hey, if you want to save a few hundred dollars and are happy with a PC notebook (spyware-infested, often bulky, badly designed, loaded with unnecessary shit like AOL, Vongo, etc and an OS that's years old already) that's your choice. Just don't preach to me about how much Macs suck - because I coudn't care less.
