- The PS3 is a great companion for a big, flat-screen TV. If you don't have a high-definition TV with at least a 42-inch screen and a good sound system, don't bother.

There's a high-def DVD player inside. There are two technologies competing to put a high-definition DVD player in your house, and I can't tell you which side is going to win, Toshiba's HD DVD system or the Blu-ray discs backed by Sony and a few other companies. But if you buy a PS3, you've made your choice.

The PS3 loves your PSP. Sony is working on a variety of ways to deliver games, video and other content over wireless networks, and joining the PS3 with the PlayStation Portable is one of its first projects.

Sony's game library. If you've had a PS2 for few years, it's going to be hard to turn your back on all those games you've acquired. They will still play just fine on the PS3, while the Xbox 360 has trouble playing some earlier Xbox games.

New games for a new box. There's no "Halo," the game that jump-started the Xbox, doing the same for the PS3. But "Resistance: Fall of Man," a PS3 exclusive, comes pretty close.
