Thank you internet: Kung Fu (NES)
Browsing the internet (or "surfing," if you prefer) very often feels like partaking in a twisted treasure hunt, laced with non-sensical clues and unrelated rewards. You start out looking at a review of the latest Bond film, you follow a link here, do a search there and before you know it, you're downloading a hilarious video of a walrus being launched from a catapult. Just such a situation lead us to become briefly obsessed with Kung Fu, that classic face-kicking adventure on the NES. It would be completely inconsiderate if we didn't share some of our findings.Find four Youtube videos embedded after the break -- if you only watch one, make sure it's the last one.
Kung Fu: Now with speed! This tool-assisted speed run shows Kung Fu being completed in under four minutes. Jump, kick. We've got to remember that one.
Kung Fu: Now with nudity! (NSFW?) It's Kung-Fu, but naked. We're as disturbed as you are.
Kung Fu: now with live-action kids! Marvel as a kid punches, kicks and decapitates his way to victory. Odd, we don't remember decapitation in the original game ...
Kung Fu: now with intrigue! Also: volleyball, aerobics, murder and meandering mushrooms.

#4 is an oldie, but a goodie.
Amos @ Dec 11th 2006 5:34AM
Oh God, #4 was hilarious. I started playing some original mini games at orisinal, went to posting movie reviews on flixster, followed by looking for some wallpapers for Chrono Trigger, and ended watching a hilarious kung video at joystiq! It's been quite a ride tonight folks. Time to get some sleep. This surf is over.

#4 is funny. I remember seeing that a long time ago. They have a website with some of their stuff, too.

Be sure to check out "Bing Bong Brothers". And if I recall, Andy was in "Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia" SNL music video. Oh and the Young Chuck Norris one, too.

Kung Fu rulez! I still play this game from time to time
FSK405K @ Dec 11th 2006 5:57AM
Wow, thinking back, I probably played Kung Fu as much I ended up playing my friend's original Soul Caliber to death (of the Dreamcast). That dude throwing things on floor 4 killed me SO many times.
I was glad to see a game that seemed to tell the truth about marriage and dating, as I assume from the end-of-game message that it turned all domestic soon.
Woa! T & C's Surf [Something]! Spy Hunter! Ultra-Woot! Thanks, Joystiq!

Andy is a regular cast member on SNL now, and Jorma and Akiva are writers.

Kung Fu is one of my favorite games of all time...freakin' tough at times though...one of the true classics if you ask me...I've had it (in some form) on my personal website (http://www.danielkayser.net/)for a while which is why I was excited to see this post...Keep it rockin' Joystiq!

This game was 10x better in the arcade. Just like most NES games. That's why people who are downloading the VC games are like.."Wasn't this a better game?" Yes. It was. IN THE ARCADE.

that last one was probably the best thing i've seen in a long time. Oh, NES games how we love you so.
ackmondual @ Dec 11th 2006 11:45AM
Fun to go through multiple quests. Later on, the underlings continue to attack you as you fight the bosses.
Another classic I'd have to play again is Legend Of Kage. However, that was for Famicom. Don't know if it came out on NES (I'm sure it did), nor if it had a different name for the US version.
Scott Winston @ Dec 11th 2006 12:56PM
How could you guys have written this update without discussing Kung Fu Remix, perhaps the best Flash version of a classic game ever? Its even better than the original Kung Fu!

I'm so mad I didn't finish this game. Wasted a crap load of tokens at the arcade and came up short at the last stage. Fast forward 15 years later. Downloaded the rom and still didn't finish it. My gaming career is so incomplete and it's really an easy game. One day I'll get back to it.
FSK405K @ Dec 11th 2006 5:54PM
Didn't know it was an arcade game. NES FTW!
