The Wii in motion (a Flickr photopool)

Nintendo should just gobble up the rights for the above image, slap some branding across the bottom, and run a nationwide ad campaign. Flickr user Michael T. Gilbert performed a Thanksgiving test on his father whose flannel shirt, Dickies, stoic face, leathered skin and spartan bedroom all evoke decades of hard work while his exceptional bowling form communicates something entirely different.
The rest of Flickr's Wii Motion pool is full of photos (408 currently) of people, young and old, all captured mid-Wii, their flailing arms and exaggerated stretch preserved in digital amber for all time.

My first reaction when I saw this photo: photoshopped. I don't have any clue if it is, but that was just my initial reaction.
hellrazer @ Dec 11th 2006 10:56PM
wish my grandpa was that cool.
Reapz @ Dec 11th 2006 10:58PM
Wrist Strap!!!!
Good on him, even a grandpa doesn't let go of it.
Jeagermeister @ Dec 11th 2006 11:19PM
It looks more like he had a heart attack as soon as he picked up the Wiimote.
The sheer power of the Wii was too much for his jaded constitution...
disguised @ Dec 11th 2006 11:19PM
Wow!!! That's some hideous wallpaper he got there!!
DanielO @ Dec 11th 2006 11:21PM
@ 1, I think its just the contrast between the old man leathery hand and the white white white wiimote.
I'm just going through the pool now, and it really makes me happy, in that warm fuzzy, we're alright as humans kind of way.
And do you notice the number of guitar hero controllers in there.... Well I dunno, there are like 2 or 3, but its neat to see the connection between the wii and GH in the types of players they draw.

Don't you mean lack of power? The Wii is nothing but a GC with a gimmicky feature.
Leto @ Dec 12th 2006 12:30AM
He's wearing Chinese clothing.

Hip replacements, FTW!

Jack Pallance lives!
"Pick up the Wiimote...pick it up".
Knoxximus @ Dec 12th 2006 1:05AM
Well, Nintendo was right about one thing....a LOT of people don't play videogames on HDTV's.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Dec 12th 2006 1:05AM
Are bowling and golf the only games that old people are playing? Every time I see stuff like this, 99% of the time, Wii Sports Bowling is showcased.
Mike @ Dec 12th 2006 1:34AM
Nintendo should run an ad campaign consisting of real world Wii usage like this photo. Payment could be in the form of a mail in rebate on the Wii units themselves. Imagine the response they would get, how many Wiis they would sell and how unique that ad campaign would be. It would be good for everyone involved.
Zell @ Dec 12th 2006 1:42AM
Oh, neat, I forgot I have photos in that pool. I do love how inclusive the Wii has made gaming in many ways. Last week for the first time a friend of mine, 46 and was never much of a gamer, was anxious to play Wii Sports.
He crushed me in tennis. -_-;
*sighs*
Frypics @ Dec 12th 2006 3:33AM
Super cool, that old dude.
Grandpas FTW!
Carl @ Dec 12th 2006 6:15AM
Get your own hobby Grandad- dont even think, or dream, you are getting your dried-up, prune-like liver-spotted claws on my SIXAXIS be-atch.
Johnny @ Dec 12th 2006 6:14AM
I wonder if theres a pic of the wiimote in mid air just as it slips out of someones hand. =)
Dark-Pen @ Dec 12th 2006 9:12AM
Mike: though that's a brilliant business model, I think that Nintendo is selling so many as it is that it really doesn't matter.
Mike @ Dec 12th 2006 12:29PM
Yeah right now they don't even have the supply for the demand that could bring, but for future sales it could be a really good idea, in my opinion anyway. Offer to those that already have a Wii to get $50 back for allowing them to use their photos in marketing. I would do it and I know a lot of other people would too, not just for the money back, but for the 60 seconds of fame as well.
Jeagermeister @ Dec 12th 2006 1:26PM
To el "360no0b"...
Videogames are here in existence for people to be able to escape from reality and enjoy themselves without having to worry about things they usually would be. The only thing the Wii has under the 360 or the PS3 is graphics (and cost, hubba-hubba), and if all you care about is graphics in a game, then you're obviously just some nerd that WANTS these things to be his/her reality.
Get a life, bud. Spend that half-thousand on your kid's college fund, not a fantasy realm you can enjoy for 20 minutes before parading on the street corner trying to pay off the debts which you now have.
You're just afraid of such "gimmicky features" because you have to get your ass up and not be so lazy.
MikeG @ Dec 17th 2006 9:44AM
Thought I'd weigh in on this photo seeing how I am the one who took it.
Firegirl: No it's not photoshopped.
Reapz: I HATE the wrist strap and my family is proof that only "out of control" people throw the wiimote. My brother bowled so hard, I though he would throw the wiimote, but it *never* left his hand.
disguised: Yes, the wallpaper is really busy, isn't it?
Jeagermeister: Well, he does have a pace-maker and is 76 years old. Thankfully, no heart attack happened.
Burnt Meatloaf: My reason for the Wii Sports thing is because that's the only "accessible" game I had for the non-gamers in my family. The only other games I brought with me were a couple of Gamecube games and Zelda Twilight Princess. And I didn't really see my dad firing up Metroid Prime 2. That being said, my family has a bowling background and I knew that I'd hook them in with this game. The funny thing is my mom is the gamer (she's 66), my dad, not so much.
