Dr. Phil prescribes Wii
78
On a recent Christmas themed episode of Dr. Phil, America's favorite tough-love shrink, the show featured the Nintendo Wii. Dr. Phil plays Wii Sports tennis with a guy (his son?) in a Castlevania looking ballroom/television room. Sadly (or happily), we don't watch the Dr. Phil around these parts, but we're guessing that promoting the system had something to do with either exercise or child abuse, because that's what his shows are usually about. After the segment Dr. Phil gives everyone in the audience a Wii -- on cue they go nuts. Still wondering how the blind kid from Ellen is doing with his Wii?
[Thanks Miles]

To "thedude", why should you feel bad that Nintendo has shifted it's focus away from you and more towards the average consumer. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy old Nintendo games, and nobody is forcing anyone to buy a new Nintendo console. There is a thing called "choice", and you shouldn't be upset that you have that too.
Even if you wanted to play the awesome new Zelda, it's on Gamecube now too!

oh, and another thing. Since when has the design of the box had any influence on the games it plays? I'll be the first to say that Nintendo is modeling its look after iPod, but iPod isn't a motion controlling game system, is it? Apple also didn't invent the colour "White", btw ;)

"It's a novelty gimmick that gets old quick."
Hmm, I've logged in more time on my Wii in 2 weeks than my brother has logged on his 360 in a full year. And I can't wait to play more. If that's "getting old quick," then I say keep on gettin' old!
In reality, the only thing getting old quick around here is all the brainless "Wii sucks" commentary from the clueless juveniles.

It's really sad, there's really only 3 arguments against the Wii, they just can't accept how good it is.
1. Graphics
2. "gimmicky"
3. Copycats
I mean really, none of them are hindering the system at all. Graphics, ok there not HD, but not everyone has an HD TV. Or how about you stop being Shallow Hal. Why is everyone so shallow about graphics? If Zelda: TP has gamecube graphics, why has it sold 400k units? Obviously graphics don't matter. What about the VC? Why would anyone buy games with crappy graphics? Maybe because they are FUN to play!
I mean get real haters. Instead on commenting how real the blades of grass look, what don't you go outside and stare at the real deal.
The remote is no way "gimmicky" either. Sure you can point out how ridiculously fun it is. You must be doing something wrong if you can't figure out why its not doing something its supposed to. Ok, hour 1 is lots of fun and immersion, hour 2 is a repeat. Simply put its almost as fun as playing the real game. The only thing it forces upon is excersize. I'm not the most in shape person, so my arms get tired. That's why you can use your wrists instead. And do I really need to play for 8 hour segments? No, I have a life and other things to do besides sitting on the couch. I'm glad the Wii gives my arms a workout and can get me to stop playing for a few (or several) hours.
I know nintendo didn't invent all the technology. Who cares? That's about all I need for this, if you care that much, then you should hate the 360, PS3, Dreamcast and everyone else who copied off Atari for making videogames. Who knows Atari could have copied videogames from somewhere else? But Nintendo sure did invent the way we PLAY video games nowadays. Also, do they really need to copy the PS2 and play DVDs? Are DVD players really that expensive that you need a console to still do it? ya that's what thought. Most people have DVD players, unlike HD TVs.

I wanted to highlight something a few other commenters have mentioned. Understand that I say this as a new dad -- my daughter just turned 1, so my life has been a lot busier lately and I don't have nearly as much game time as I used to. More importantly, the free time I do manage to snag comes in 10-20 minute chunks, not hour blocks like back when I was in college. I still love games like Final Fantasy, but man is it hard to get enough time to get from one save point to the next. Even Zelda, which never left my Wii from launch day until I beat it, was a bit tough to devote time to, and about 1/3 of the 50+ hours I clocked were with the "Home" menu displayed (pausing the game).
Then I discovered Wii Sports. I expected to tinker with it for an hour or two then move on to something different. Wrong. I love it, my wife loves it, even my 1-year-old likes to watch and cries if I don't give her the controller. And the amazing thing is, when I know I've got like 10 minutes free, before I would just sit down and check my email. Now, I can bowl a few games, or hit a few 3-hole rounds of golf, or run through my Fitness Exam for the day. I'm getting gaming back, in a way that never really happened before. Between Wii Sports and the "sleep" button on my PSP, I get to play almost an hour games every day, as long as I can break up that time into easy-to-digest bites. This, ladies and gentlemen, is *big*.

There are only 3 things hindering the Nintendorks from having a valid debate about the wii:
1. No Brains.
2. Brand Loyalty.
3. Chronic Liars.
Lets see here I think someone said that playing zelda you forget about the controlls in your hand? LOL I guess that true assuming you never need to go into your inventory...Inventory selection is the most inconviently placed control scheme on any controller. In fact if a Wii game has more than 4 buttons your going to be looking at that controller an awful lot.
Poorly responsive controlls that either ignore your commands or interrperet them incorrectly. Of course Zelda is so devoid of startegy all you have to do is hold down the button and randomly shake the wiimote until you defeat said enemy in the game (This statement is backed up by most of the reviews about Zelda).
Everything about this system is cheap and rank...only someone with no objectivity at all could call this console a good deal. Nintendo is awesome they figured out a way to sell old gamecubes again to their fanboys and for that they deserve to be saluted, tack on an 8 year old motion sensing controller concept and whooopie its the greatest thing ever even though the same motion controllers failed to take off 9 years ago.
It takes a lot of Nintendo Die hards and clever marketing on Nintendos part to have made sure this lame piece of tech wasn't DOA already. I surely can't see the Wii making it in the longhaul with a bunch of minigames.
Oh yeah the comparison vs. the DS, lets talk about this. The DS is a handheld on the go system where you want shallow easy to swallow gameplaylet experiences. The DS works in this case beacuse of its need to provide short bursts of entertainment. When your sitting in your home your not going to want to play those little mini game throw away games for hours and hours (unless your a hopeless nintendo fanboy and lie to yourself). Eventually your going to be seeking deeper experiences and thats where the Wii falls flat.
So Fanboys enjoy your breif sell through period, that will change when the lies wear off and people see what they are really stuck with.

Okay, I've been baited and I can't help but bite on this one...
Shagi, I've seen you post before and you are most definitely a fan boy.
Please stop referring to the Wii as a 'Gamecube'. There is a new CPU and a new GPU, it only uses the same basic 'architecture' as the GC. It's the equivalent of saying that my Dual-Core Pentium 2.9GHZ machine is the same as my original IBM PC. It shows that you know little of Electronic Engineering and programming.
Gesture-based movement is nothing new nor is it necessarily a 'step down'. I wouldn't necessarily call the Wii's remote a 'step up' either though. It is simply a different method of controlling the on-screen action. What the Wii does provide, is perhaps a more *intuitive* interface which seems readily apparent given the number of non-gamers who can just pick up and play. The problem with making the controls too responsive is that it could actually HAMPER gameplay. Sure they might be able to make Zelda so that your sword movements are mimicked on-screen, but how many of us out there actually know proper sword techniques? (Strangely enough I do, but only because of interest in fencing.)
Finally, not all of us are capable of even playing our consoles for long spurts at a time, especially those people who consider themselves casual gamers. Right above your post is one by James. I suggest you read it since he's the perfect example of a demographic that would probably prefer the Wii to a PS3 or 360. Some of us are older with...oh my god...LIVES!!!
You make poor arguments with little logic behind what you're saying. If you want to give your OPINION, that's fine, but I've seen you on this site constantly stating 'facts' without much to back them up.
PS - Sorry guys. I fed one of the trolls. Bad Matt, no donut!

Wow, Shagi, you're a bitter one.
If it makes you feel better, I only play Twilight Princess for two to three hours at night after work. And my friends and I only played Wii games (Wii Sports, Rayman Raving Rabbids and Super Monkey Ball) for about seven hours after Thanksgiving dinner.
Sure, Twilight Princess is seen as a GameCube game but if the controls work that well now I can only imagine the amazing games that will be released for the system.
As for the shallow gameplay, those games you can just pick up and play in short bursts are what appeal to people who aren't avid gamers. They'd much rather play a couple rounds of golf in Wii Sports and stop than sit and play something for hours on end.
I just find it amusing that a lot of comments against the Wii mirror those made when the DS was released. I think we all know how that turned out. It's not even the fact that many Wii users feel the need to justify their purchase or love for the system, it's just that the ignorant and completely uninformed comments are aggravating. Especially in threads where they're uncalled for.
Take that Debbie Downer trite elsewhere.

I provide examples and facts to back up my argument in every post. All I ever get back from you fanboys is BS personal attacks.
At least Scooby Doo will admit that the new wiimote doesn't live up to the hype. And dont give me that down the line crap cause everytime someone mentions that with a different console the nintendo fans cry out, "Well what about now". Besides if your talking down the line, like 2 or 3 years time, the PS3 will look like gold next to the Wii, the novelty of the lame controller will have worn off and the graphics will continue to look like pig turds.
By the way do you really think gaming got to where it is today beacuse guys like the dude with the baby that can only play for 10 minutes bought up all those games. No way...gimmie a break...were looking at 2 entirely different clans of gamers here, casual, and hardcore (hardcore means you commonly buy more than 1 game a month), hardcore drives the industry, the casual market is huge, but your not going to seel mass quantities of games to the casual market who dont buy as many games.
So how will nintendo keep the casual market going? Selling shorter games that provide less and less of a gameplay experience to try and keep the hamsters pressing the feed button. VC anyone? Only a casual gamer would buy games they've already had for years again, and only a fool would waste 5$ on something they know won't hold their interest for more than 5 minutes.
I can type till I'm blue in the fingers, and until you guys start backing up your defenses with actual facts I'm going to consider you fanboy fanatics.

Had enough of Shagi's 3 same rants over and over, especially the part about fanboys and blind loyalty. I've never owned anything by Nintendo prior to the Wii, and neither have my 3 friends that bought
theirs, nor my other 3 friends that are still looking to get one.
Nintendo has gotten a whole new crowd with the Wii, and the hardcore, "cutting-edge-only" gamers are just going to have to sit back and watch as the common people have their say- and they are going to
choose the Wii. We don't have hours on end to play anything "deep", the majority of us don't have HD tv's, and none of my friends spend their time online reading gaming crap like this, because it's not
part of their lives- but the Wii fits into their lives perfectly. I see it selling well for a long time to come as more people see it in action for themselves.
I have a 360, but even after I got it, I still
played more on my "inferior" Dreamcast- because the games on it were more fun! The only reason the Dreamcast is gone now is because I got the Wii.
I'm not a "Fanboy", but I like the Wii- doesn't mean I'm not running out to buy a DS or anything, and I really have no interest in the Mario stuff, but I am looking forward to more sports games and racing games like Excite Truck. And I don't mean to insult anyone by saying "common" people, but I mean everyday people, like the ones that Dr. Phil gave out all those Wii consoles too- those are the masses that the Wii was ultimately made for, and I think, no matter how much Shagi stamps his feet and wets his pants, they will keep on buying that crappy gamecube with the crappy controller and crappy games, lol. I know I will! Wiiiiiiii!
PS- also, in terms of selling games- please look at the Best Buy ad for this week. Note how they are bribing people with gift cards to buy PS3 and 360 stuff- and not even bothering to advertise the Wii games- because they don't HAVE to! They are flying off the shelves- I have a friend that manages inventory there and she says the PS3 games are just not moving, but the Wii games are selling like crazy. And from the way I'm buying them (and my friends) I don't doubt her- I've got more games for my Wii than the 360 already.
Anyway, just the thoughts of a totally LAME, non-deep, graphically impaired female over here who is totally happy with her Wii purchase.

Its plainly obvious that people who hate Nintendo are insanely JEALOUS on the type of positive exposure the Wii is enjoying. Imagine a high profile TV doctor - Dr Phil fully endorsing the product - you sony and xbox fanbots would kill for that type of publicity for your respective consoles, but Dr Phil wouldn't endorse those product, nor would he be caught on camera playing it, But he has for the Wii. Its finally sinking in to whingers like shagi that the Wiis broad based appeal is taking hold and people are taking notice. shagi, how many people do you think you can influence with your whinging rants - NO ONE. How many people can Dr Phil influence - Millions!!! You lose!!!!!!! Wii chances of winning this generation just rose dramatically!!
So suck on your bitter grapes Whiners.

Its really quite sad that:
1. Dr. Phil can influence 'millions' of people.
2. You proudly proclaim Dr Phils influence beacuse hes pimpin out your system.
3. You feel the need to make fun of my popularity vs. Dr. Phil to prove your point.
I bet Dr Phil:
1. Has a state of the art entertainment centre and he doesn't play any video games on it.
2. Has an inferriority complex about Oprah.
3. Was givin those Wii's to distribute free of charge to his audience.
Heres some interesting facts for you about what middle America likes...see if you can guess where I'm going with this.
Most Popular TV shows: Survivor, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars
Most popular music: High School Musical Soundtrack, Justin Tiberlake's album FutureSex/LoveSounds, James Blunt's Back to Bedlam
Heres an interesting one: Best selling games of 2006:
1. Final Fantasy XII - PS2 (Square Enix)
2. Gears Of War - Xbox 360 (Microsoft)
3. Guitar Hero 2 Bundle - PS2 (Activision)
4. Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Wii (Nintendo)
5. Call Of Duty 3 - Xbox 360 (Activision)
6. WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2007 - PS2 (THQ)
7. Gears of War Collectors Ed. - Xbox 360 (Microsoft)
8. Madden NFL 07 - PS2 (Electronic Arts)
9. Need For Speed: Carbon - PS2 (Electronic Arts)
10. Need For Speed: Carbon - Xbox 360 (Electronic Arts)
11. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007 - Xbox 360 (THQ)
12. Guitar Hero 2 - PS2 (Activision)
13. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - PS2 (Activision)
14. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas - Xbox 360 (Ubisoft)
15. Scarface: The World Is Yours - PS2 (Vivendi)
16. Socom: U.S. Navy Seals Combined Assault - PS2 (Sony Computer Ent.)
17. F.E.A.R. - Xbox 360 (Vivendi)
18. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - PS2 (Atari)
19. Guitar Hero Bundle - PS2 (Activision)
20. Red Steel - Wii (Ubisoft)
Whats most impressive is you can see the casual gamer influence entering the chart with such classics as 'Red Steel', 'Guitar Hero', 'Scarface', and 'WWE Smackdown'.
I'm afraid the platinum age of gaming could be going away with a new wave of noobs (casual gamers) entering the market. If the uninformed start spending more money on crappy games and the hardcore no longer control the market gaming is heading downhill fast.
Like the examples above, popular doesn't = good. I have no doubt however that the Wii trend will blow over and ultimately it will be a battle between MS and Sony again. Nintendo will go their traditional route of offering lots of poor 3rd party games and the occasional must have Nintendo in house game.

Point 1:
PARENTS LISTEN TO DR. PHIL.
So when Dr. Phil tells everyone to get a Wii, what do you expect is going to happen? Sales are gonna go through the gorram ROOF. (man I wish I was in that audience.. I don't get mine for another week and a half!)
Point 2:
The blind Ellen kid who got a Wii? (not to mention 5 DS Lites...)
Given the fact that we can see him pwning his brother in Soul Calibur II on his Gamecube, playing basketball, etc, I don't think a Wii would be too much hassle to get used to. and on top of that, he's got a HUGAMUNGOUS FAMILY. They can play it too, ya know!

All feed the troll...
Even if the Wii didn't have the motion sensing thing, I'd still buy it. Why? 'cus it's cheap, 'cus Nintendo's first party titles are known for rocking crotches, 'cus it's small, 'cus I don't own a HDTV so there goes the other consoles biggest selling point -- but this new controller thing apparently was well-received, and even casual gamers seem to like it, and after playing on my Wii some time, I can say it certainly rocks. Would I have bought it if the legendary Nintendo franchises weren't on it?
I doubt it, but seeing as the Wii enjoys an immense popularity, and the PS3 is looking pretty bad right now, developers are going for the Wii, the console that fits my budget, gaming preferences, and life style. And now it will get all the coolest titles thanks to the "new possibilities" in the interface and it's huge popularity and low development costs! What more could I possibly ask for? Better graphics? Perhaps, but since neither me, nor a huge part of the population can experience these graphics to their fullest because of the lack of an HDTV, it's a moot point.
I would like to see CoD3 on both the Wii and the PS3 running on 480i, I'm willing to bet my ass the difference does not even come close to justify an extra 350$! And don't come here telling me that that includes a Blu-Ray disc player, before the PS3 I had never heard of it, and as I've said before, the lack of an HDTV would certainly make Blu-Ray look less hot, not to mention it's a huge risk too since it might lose against HD DVD. I'll stick with normal DVD's...
Am I a blind fanboy that only buys out of brand loyality? No, I own a PS2 and it makes the GameCube look like a fucking joke, huge gaming catalog, tons of exclusive titles, nice slim version, not outrageously priced, if the PS3 can follow up on these points, it will most certainly be a considerable purchase, but the way it's looking now, PS3 has got nothing
Will I buy a PS3? Maybe once these conditions are met:
*Shrink down that fucking monster of a console
*Shrink down that fucking monster of a price
*Get good exclusive titles on the PS3
*Win the fucking lottery, and buy a HDTV (OK, this one is not totally necessary)
I'm kinda curious what you've got to say about this post Shagi, I fed your little troll mouth, now feed me please.

Your Jealousy know no bounds shagi. What now your jealous of Dr Phils success?! Cry me a river why don't you.
Of course its a big deal. Has he ever promoted other consoles before, i don't think so (although i must admit i don't watch him at all), and you see him openly promoting the Wii, even playing it with his own son (and happiy enjoying it aswell) - and his show is watched by Millions of parents looking for parental advice. Now parents are gonna think (because of Dr Phil) the Wii is a great way to interact with the kids. On top if that the Wii promotes fitness too, remember the 'bulging bicepts' line (or words to that effect). Lets see according to Dr Phil, the Wii allows parents to play with their kids and enjoy quality time together, & keeps parents and kids fit & active, guess what - PARENTS ARE GONNA LOVE IT (this is something the 360 nor ps3 just can't do)!! Deny it all you want.
So Nintendo figured out what the majority of people are actually looking for (hence the Wii concept). What, is that suddenly a bad thing? Well only because you don't approve.

If the Wii increases the number of parents that hit their kids, the world will be a better place.
Assuming of course that the kids had it comming, and not just an abusive drunken father type.
Billy your in trouble, time to play some Wii sports.

One more thing the Wii is not going to keep you fit.
You have to play ping-pong for 12 hours to lose one pound ...
I believe ping pong is a lot more intense than only the swinging of the arms part. So if you play Wii to lose weight, your only introducing the most modest of physical activities. Better off just looking at your diet, eating healthier, and not over eating. But that advice doesn't help move Wiis to idiots does it?

Fitness and losing weight is not the same thing retard. You can be fit and still be fat if that's your metabolism.

Is it me, or is Shagi getting alot of unfair critisism for having his OWN OPINION about the Wii? Are we living in an age where peoples opinions don't matter?
Now ive bought virtually every console over the past 15years and consider myself a "hardcore" gamer, probably the last of a dying breed with the birth of more casual gamers and these utter losers called "fan-boys".
The Wii is a great console. Im thoroughly enjoying playing it at the moment, as its brought a fresh approach to the gaming scene. HOWEVER, im not 100% blind unlike some. Its obvious it isnt exactly a technical leap above the Gamecube, and while i agree graphics dont account to much, they do to alot of casual gamers. You only have to go into a local gaming store to see the people drooling over the 360/PS3 graphics.
Ill also fight anyone who regards the Wii's controller as 'innovation'. Like i said before, i think its a fresh approach that was greeatly needed, but the technology isn't exactly 'innovative', as its been around for a long time now and in various formats, whether it be the power glove to even the eye-toy(to a degree), motion sensing control has been around, so its not exactly a new technology.
Is the Wii a gimmick. You damn right it is, and Nintendo are milking it for all its worth. And i dont blame them one bit. If people, like yourselves, are buying into it, then it leaves Nintendo very happy, and people happy, as companies will continue to make good games for the system. The problem is that how much of the whole movement thing can gamers take? I know Nintendo fans will say they'd spend there entire lives playing it without fuss (and if thats you, i suggest trying to get a social life), but will casual gamers etc really want to play games with a controller like the Wii's all the time? Its been clearly evident with Eye-toy, which was a movement based control, that while the idea caught on at first and sold bucketloads, it soon died down and the whole "gimmick" part fell away. Theres only so much hacking and slashing with a Wiimote people can take before the movement thing becomes too repetitive, and i can see alot of people dying for a joypad.
Of course, alot of it will come down to how the developers make use of the Wiimote which will determine how good the Wii will be as a console. Im definitely not going to put my blind faith into Nintendo like some on here though. Im big enough to find faults within the system, along with Sony and Microsoft too.

#77 No its just you.
Lets see shagi doesn't even address the article regarding Dr Phil he goes straight in to his Anti Nintendo rhetoric like with every positive News on Nintendo. He doesn't even make one effort to make his comments relavent to the discussion at hand, he just sees it as another opportunity for his Anti Wii comments. Plus he also insults people for there choice of console. quote-
"There are only 3 things hindering the Nintendorks from having a valid debate about the wii:
1. No Brains.
2. Brand Loyalty.
3. Chronic Liars."
Hmm and you can't understand why he recieves such harsh critisms. I hope i don't have to spell it out for you.
Besides he wrote those comments, and people here are allowed to have an opinion on what he has said, if thats too much for him to take well i suggest he quits commenting.
I know he can't stand the fact that the Wii is getting so much positive coverage, first South Park, Now Dr Phil. That type of exposure is priceless and is too much for him to bear. The Wii is not the console for everyone so if its not for you quit your whinging, the 360 and the ps3 will cater for your needs. I don't know why this is so hard for some people to comprehend.
