Nice. Maybe this will help the PSP's dead library a bit.

I agree about they should have made this a downloadable port. It is basically the same game.

Wait...so the FFT sequel is for GBA?

This both confuses and saddens me.

Its not that they are picking favorites. Its just that when the DS is outselling the PSP in Japan 7 to 1, in a country that loves RPGs is just smart business.

It hasn't yet been confirmed if FFTAdvance 2 will be for GBA or DS. The name alone would make me think it's for GBA... but... [shrugs]

And Grimjoe is right. Were PSP trouncing DS, SE would be making more ORIGINAL titles for PSP.

Nice! FFT is a very fun game, and I'd be happy to remake. No one complains about FFV and FFVI on GBA being just the same old game with a few upgrades.

This is the same logic they use in their support of consoles, but, reversed. So, support the big console, but, not too much and give the little guy something so that SE fanbase dont go nuts. In the handheld arena, PSP is the little guy by a large margin, esp. in the home territory of Japan.

Its also why the reason why PS3 will get a proper FF13 game while Wii gets something else (that and the fact that the FF13 engine is also optimized for PS3) as well as that idiotic on-rails DQ game. No doubt, Square is banking on PS3 winning in the long run.

Oh, yea, the last part of their strategy: wtf is xbox?

"No doubt, Square is banking on PS3 winning in the long run."

Not necessarily. They had to pick one of the two well before either of them was released and before there was even a whole lot of info for the consoles, and since the vast majority of their customers were on the PS2 the PS3 ended up being the safer bet. Even if it ends up in last place this time around, they know that a number of the people who bought the PS2 for their games will be getting PS3s and so they'll still have enough customers on the system to support their games, which is something they can't say for the Wii.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have a FFT rehash with extra cutscenes and new jobs than another FFTA...

I didn't think it was possible to spin this in a negative light, given that all the other ports of FF games to GBA and DS were met with open arms, but James you have shown me the way.

Yeah by all indications if they DID do DQ9 on a home system it would of been on the PS2.

Saying that DS stole DQ9 from the PS3 is a big leap. Now if it was the Wii or something, ok fine.

But there's a huge difference between making a game for the DS... and making one for the PS3.

If anything i think SE is going somewhere different with the DQ franchise... kinda like FF11.

And such a surprise -- MORE PSP hating from Nintenstiq, complete with the eternally-riled N-fanboys kicking up the volume in grand old fashion.

The slanted/colored slam of the day comes in the form of a REMAKE of a PS1 title for the PSP, about which we know very little other than it will have new FMV and job classes. Sounds like it'll be a bit more than just another 'filthy port' as the DS fanboy chorus chants.

So then, I guess I'm confused... Was Mario 64 DS (and all the other ports and mildly warmed-over remakes) some kind of evidence of DS inferiority or Nintendo hedging their bet with the system?

And just how does DQIX on DS mean anything about how well the PS3 is expected to do? Ah, it doesn't matter - the Nintendo faithful will seize on just about anything, anymore.

I am a bit confused by this spin as well, pixelator. I'm as Nintendo die-hard as they come, but I was just ambivolent when the announcement came about FFT and FFTA. Actually, there was an actual response I had. "Damn, I wish the FFT remake would come to the DS too!" Instead, this is spun as bad news for the PSP?

Hmph.

Now this is a little weird, Sony fanboys accuse Nintendo of constetly remakeing and rehashing there games but when a remake of a Playstation game comes out for the PSP, they eat it up like a cake on there birthday. I hope FFT will be a good game. I do want the handheld market to be competitive.

I must admit I'm surprised by the slant on this topic too.

Maybe the reason for this is because the writer is mad because the Next Big Game for the PSP is a 5yr+ old port not a brand-new game or a sequel. I know if I owned a PSP I'd be mad about the lack of quality NEW games for my system.

And yes I realise it's a remake with new content, not just a quick and dirty port.

There really isn't a good reason to harp on Sony/SE for this one. Yeah, it's a "rehash", but shit, why is that a bad thing?

You have an old, great game, and it's just sitting in digital storage somewhere. Why not re-release it on handheld or part of a compilation? It's not like publishers are holding a gun to anybody's head and forcing them to buy it.

I think releasing to handhelds is particularily great.. especially if it's a game you enjoyed in past years but don't quite feel like digging out/hooking up/finding/rebuying etc. The freedom that handhelds offer is unrivaled and is a perfect medium for old classics. Even more so than the Sony/MS/Nintendo download services.

PSP gets a remake, DS (or GBA) gets a sequel. Which one seems more newsworthy? Which one is the subject of the article?

Why the difference? I guess the PSP game is noteworthy for being yet another port, but this would have been much more interesting from a journalistic standpoint as an article touting the support Nintendo is getting from SE.

At least this will get new players into one of the best Tactical RPGs ever concived by man.

As for DQ9, get over it. DS is where the money's at the moment. It's a very good business decision on SE's part. Pair up with the leading gaming unit with Japan's arguably most famous title = makes lots of money. I bet if PS3 was released earlier and lead the market, it would be on it. Hell, I'd bet that if the 360 sold like hotcakes in Japan IT would be on it.

"What does dq9 have to do with ps3?"

Howzabout the fact that Dragon Quest is the biggest selling franchise in Japan (if not the world) and that everyone was shocked that the next game isn't going to be on the PS3, as was largely expected.

I wouldn't be surprised to see FF-XIV or DQ-X on the Wii in the future.

Now, I figured after that lame publicity stunt pulled off by Sony, I would NEVER get a PSP.

And then SquareEnix does this, and as favorable as I find the DS, this will be THE game that will get me a PSP.

Now for all those who are saying "Waah they could just release this as a downloadable title! Lik WTF?"

FFT could use these tweaks. The US version of FFT not only had a pretty poor translation but plenty of things cut out for the US release.

I was just watching some of the cinemas for FFT on Youtube the other day and I was JUST thinking how great it would be if it was boosted to FFXII quality or if it had FFXII-calibur voice acting. And aside from Voice acting which isn't confirmed, they're definetely adding cinemas. And there's NO reason why SquareEnix wouldn't retranslate the game which was one of the biggest flaws and add the cut story bits.

Admit it, if this was released as a downloadable title, people would whine about how it has nothing extra and it still is plagued by that meh translation.

To quote the game,
"This is the way!"

It sounds like more than just a port to me. FF III saw a fantastic remake for the DS. perhaps in the case of FFT it might be similar. Why the complaints about it instead of excitement at the possibility of an expanded and enhanced version of one of the (in my opinion) greatest rpgs of all time? I for one would prefer a distinct and expanded version over an emulation any day.

I'm not seeing a remake here, as in new game engine and updated graphics, just a few tweaks and new classes.

Will it be good? Yes, Will it warrant another 40 dollars for most people that have already played the game before (and essentially will be replaying it again)? No, unless they just need to get a new PSP game, then I guess it is okay.

I can see where Ransom-Wiley is coming from. And the posts here saying that adding all this new content will make it great still goes along with what he's saying. If they put all this time and money into revamping a port of a five year old game, why not use it towards making a sequel instead? I have a PSP and I would /love/ to get some use out of it. But I'm not going to pay $50 for yet another old playstation port. I want some NEW GAMES. Seriously. And comparing it to FFIII is just wrong. Unless I'm mistaken, FFIII was never released in the states until the DS remake.

So basically I want to give my psp some lovin, but there's just nothing I'm interested in coming out for it... except Elder Scrolls... but I'm more worried about how that could turn out.

I have to admit....as much as I hate Sony, this spin raises a few questions about Joystiqs objectivity in my mind as well.

Hell...the DS's biggest rpg before the announcement of DQ9 was FFIII! And while the game got quite the upgrade, it's still really a old game port! And we Nintendo fans were squeeling like little girls about it.

The only reasons I can think that Sony is still getting a little blasted about a port on this one is because:

1) While the DS does get SOME ports, it still has more original (and GOOD) content than the PSP by far.

2) The DS does not have the ability to download old PS1 games the way the PSP does. And FFT is a PS1 game! So for SE to give the PSP FFT at full price rather than just make the PS1 version available for download like other games is a bit........cheap.

But even with those points factored in, I fail to see why this is really bad news for a handheld system in DESPARATE need of some good content...old or otherwise.

Aaaaaaaaand Derbeste's a fanboy. Are you saying that all PSP games are crappy and all DS games are godly? That sounds like a fanboy. I'm sorry fanboys, get over it. I have both a DS and a PSP, and they're both good system. It's awesome that FFT's coming out on a UMD for those of us who don't want to go through the trouble of messing up our system to get an emulator or having to use a really big file size. And Wtf? DQ? That has nothing to do with anything here.

FFT is one of my favorite games of all time. There aren’t many turn based strategy/rpgs I would put in the same class as FFT. (Shining Force, Ogre Battle…)

Still, why the hell would I want to dish out good money and time on a game I have already allocated 50+ hours to?

imo, FFTA was horrible...i wish i had waited a while before getting it, i was so hyped over it being a portable version of FFT with different story, but it was ~too~ different for me...it almost made me not get FFXII b/c i assumed it was going to be just as lame...
i'm glad they proved me wrong, and i plan to buy the FFT remake for psp, and maybe the FFTA sequel for the DS...i'll wait to make that decision at least...

Beats all the GBA/DS REHASH. Too bad joystiq article--unreliable. Square hadn't even set the extras in stone and joystiq cries REHASH. I'm glad Square will continue to make more announcements on additional features to this game. Square in doing so will make joystiq eat their words with each new announcement. Beats what Capcom/Ubisoft did with "Resident Evil 4."
