If you're going to rip on me for making a typo above, then learn to use the English language first. "U" is not a word. Yes, a petty remark; but so was yours in response to my comment. That is all.

Sorry, but PS2 games on my PS3 look exactly the same as on my PS2 (I have a normal 4:3 480i TV). No better, no worse.

Just like PS1 games on a PS2 look exactly like a PS1 game.

I’ve been playing Soul Calibur II and Final Fantasy XII and seen no difference.

So let’s stop the nonsense.

@ Laurens Holst

That's why the video was made, so that people who don't pay close attention to detail would be able to see the difference directly. Obviously it can be hard to notice on older TVs, but the problem is still there, and it's proven. As a PS3 owner, wouldn't you rather your games look just as good as they do on PS2 if you ever decide to upgrade your TV?

@ Laurens Holt

You have an SDTV and if you are playing in 480i then you are most likely using composite cables. Both of those factors would pretty much mask the problem for you. PS3 owners with EDTV's (480p) or PS3 owners with HDTV's running their games in 480p or above will be the ones most effected by this.

Okay, people who understand all this ###i/p stuff a little better than I, please answer this question for me. I have a PS3 and was planning on getting Final Fantasy XII, Okami and Kingdom Hearts 2 around Christmas. I sold my PS2 to a coworker, so are these games ones that are going to look crapified on a current PS3? (BTW, they'll be displaying on component video cables on a rather large, non-HD, CRT TV.) Thanks in advance for the advice.

You guys need to do some research before commenting on this issue. For a guy here who said "sony should just have put ps2/1 hardware in the ps3!" Sony did and there are pics of the Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU) and the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU) on a single chip in the PS3 console.
Pic of EE/GS inside PS3:
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=715674&view=by_date_ascending&page=2

Now for the more important part. This issue can be fixed with a little tweaking of your Cross Media Bar Display Options. Make sure before you play PS3 games that your display options are set to standard NTSC and not any HD resolutions. Yes it sucks but it works until Sony fixes this issue. I have personally tried this on my PS3 and it works. PS3 looks nearly indentical to PS2. The games I tested were FFX, MGS2, FFXII.

Sony has stated that they intend to drop the EE+GS chip found currently found in the PS3 with a future revision. There are also a few other chips inside the PS3 that will likely be merged together to reduce costs. Sony is waiting for the software emulation to reach the level of backwards compatibility that is compariable to there hardware solution. It is impressive that only ~2% of PS2 and PS1 games will not work with the PS3.

The PS2 ran most of its games internally at a 640 x 240 resolution which matched the resolution of a single 480i field. The system would have to output two fields to produce a full frame. Games that supported 480p were ran internally at 640 x 480 even if connected to a 480i display. These differences in how various PS2 software works could easily be the cause of the PS3 jaggies in various titles when outputting to an HDTV.

While there maybe some graphical issues with PS2 games, the overwelming majority still function and are playable (except perhaps for those in the graphics whore crowd, which Sony is keen on marketing the PS3 to). Sony has not made any claims about outputing PS2 games at a higher resolution, increase anti-aliasing or better filtering. While it does seem to be a trend to bash the PS3 right now, and in many ways Sony deserves it, but they did live up to there promise of backwards compatibility.

The only thing Sony has yet to deliver on is software emulation which is expected sometime in 2007. With rumors of the European launch being pushed back to September, it would make sense to delay it so it can coincide it with a major hardware revision. This is just speculation on my part.

@DigitalHero:

First of all, while this fixes input lag, it doesn't completely fix the graphical glitches.

Secondly, if you're using HDMI, "NTSC Standard" is not an option. The PS3 forces PS1/PS2 games to output 480p, even if they didn't originally support it (which causes input lag and adds to the graphical glitches).

Um, anyone who's used a TV recently knows that all inputs look slightly differently, even on top-of-the-line LCDs. It's not the same format, it won't look exactly the same. Try hooking up your digital cable box via component and DVI and VGA, they'll look slightly different color-wise. Then what are you going to do? Bitch to your cable company? lol It's the television too, guys (not [just] Sony being lazy or whatever you Nintendo fanboys want to hate on.) People think over-saturated/vivid = better. Things should look natural (or the way it's intended to look), not like someone cranked the contrast or color. This is why all the pricey TVs in Best Buy look "better," they set it to be vivid. It's fastfood for your eyes.

Thats totally Awesome! I love that sony makes the graphics look worse. Makes me think of the PSX days. Before I was starting to wonder if I should just hold out on PS3 till the price drops, now I'm gonna get one A.S.A.P before they fix this bug! Thanks for showing, now I have something to look forward to other than the potential Remake of FF7 for PS3. Oh and for those who didn't get this, I'm NOT being sarcastic. I actually love that this makes the graphics look worse. I actually kinda like bad graphics in some cases. Although this will crap out my Soul Calibur 3 nights kind of...Oh well 10/10 for the PS3 now! Thank you so much Sony!

Is there anyway to complain about this issue? I just set up my PS3 yesterday and played FFXII, and it looks horrible. No matter what I select for output video, nothing seems to help. Do we call that Sony 800 number to let Sony know about this problem?

Just got a PS3 today (20 gig) and, yup I see jaggies, tons of them in both PS1 and PS2 games. While ultimatly this is Sony's fault, the RSX chip in the PS3 is basically the Geforce 7800 GTX, and if you look into the past of nVidia's graphics cards, nVidia has a history of having tons of jaggies with their cards. I really hope a firmware update would fix it.

you guys are all such babies. heres the bottom line.

the only systems with really few problems ever are nintendo systems. sure the wii might fall over but thats it.

the xbox 360 had a plethora of problems as it first launched. i mean half the damn systems overheated. its bc isn't perfect, and neither has its xbox live as ive read.

finally the ps3 has problems. yes. of course it will. its the most technologically advanced out of the three systems and yea sony probably had to rush it a bit, but so did microsoft. nintendo just chilled and developed something fun. but even they are having a hard time shipping units and their system is nothing technologically to the 360 or ps3.

everyone needs to stop bitching and just enjoy what they got. if you like ps3, nintendo, or xbox, then so be it. in the past if there has been a problemwith the hardware on consoles there wasn't much you could do to fix it. now that the consoles are all able to download crap, they can get patched with firmware updates which im sure can fix a majority of the problems that may span the three systems. i dont think any of the manufactureres would of overlooked something crucial in the hardware, they probably just couldn't include it in the software at first.

lastly, stop arguing like little girls. play some games already and spend soem time with your girlfriend haha, if you have one.

I couldn't care less if the graphics go down a bit. Good games aren't all about graphics people. I'm getting a PS3 regardless, and I won't be so shallow like the maker of this video. You can still enjoy the games.

The PS3 CAN output PS2 games with no loss in visual quality. You just have to use the included SDTV cables and (most importantly) a 4:3 SDTV/HDTV. Mine is an old 2001 Sony Wega which does 480i - 1080i with 720p included, but also has standard SD inputs. It looks absolutely perfect with that setup. I'll try and get some screenshots, but I really don't have any video input equipment for my computer.

However, if I attempt to use the same configuration on my 32 inch LCD Sharp Aquos which I purchased for my XBox 360, it STILL looks like complete crap. I don't know what the issue is, but I highly suspect it might be specific to newer HDTVs.

I just got a ps3. I'm a sony supporter and try to give microsoft as little money as possible. The first thing I did was to put my FFXII disc in the ps3. That graphics look the same if not better. The details looked sharper and the game loads faster. The whole issue is somewhat reduant as sony will fix it and I can always play my ps2 games on my ps2. Besides who the hell wants to play FF X still, how much lighting can you realy avoid, when FF XII is such a better game.

"I wonder how many of you actually followed the links to original story- NOT All GAMES HAVE THIS ISSUE!!!
Shame on you joystiq for your deceptive title! It should have been "ps3 has scaling issues with 480i coded ps1 & ps2 games, notably FFXII & MGS2"!
How about something closer to the TRUTH next time?"

Yeah...like who wants to play FFXII these days anyways? Sheesh. Yet another example of the PS3 not living up to expectations. Xbox FTW!!!

I just picked up the PS3 today. It was tooth and nail to find one! I wish I would've read this article and watched the video before I got the system. Not to say that I wouldn't have bought the system at all, but atleast I would've waited till all the kinks got worked. I tell you on e thing, I should've did the same thing like I did with the 360 when I bought it and that is wait atleast 6 months before buying any system. NOT within 3 months of launch. Right now I'm wishing I got a Wii or more 360 games instead. Now I gotta rehook up my PS2 cuz the backwards compatibility graphics look like absolute utter garbage! I'm very upset about that! And downloading stuff like demos are so painfully slow and they don't download in the background either like the 360. The 360 gives you freedom to do whatever want while the download is going and plus you can stop a download anytime and restart where it left off. Not the case with the PS3! I have so many gripes with the internal software or more like the lack of that is. I'm so peaved off at my PS3 right now it's not even funny after I spent lots of $$$ for it and look at my 360 which I've owned for 6 months already and paid less for it and I have tons of games for it. Launch titles are so-so at best for the PS3, but I was hoping the PS2 games would look awesomely better after seeing what 360 did with there xbox1 games. Damn I am so disappointed and disappointed about sooo many other things too, but it'll be too long to list. Gawd damn it!

On the plus the blu-ray movies do look really good and graphics for the games do look pretty decent for the early stages even though I'm not interested in those games. I sure hope $ony does something fix those jaggys up... SOON!!!

Meanwhile just play my ps2 games on... guess what? MY PS2 system!! LOL!! or go play my 360!! I'm wish right about now that I got Wii instead. Well there are a few games I'm looking forward that always come out for PS and that would be from the FF franchise and the one I'm looking out for the most is Ninja Gaiden Sigma! I know that $ony will eventually fix these problems... I hope! So I'm not giving up hope, but damn $ony you had a whole year to examine the 360, their features and online capability and didn't even copy them... and make it better. DAmn it!
