Considering the game's position in time I doubt it's focusing on science fiction. Mystical focus, yes, but not science fiction. Perhaps the enemy, cult, or whatever is using arcane skills to find this assassin, but to have a jump from the 12th century to well beyond the 21st century to determine the assassin is an absurd choice.

This is the first game in a planned trilogy - there has been mention that there is a possibility that the next games do not take place in the 12th century.

My guess - said "matrix-using" company is looking for a long lost artifact unearthed during the crusades. When it is determined that Alstair did indeed have possession of the artifact and that you as his last descendent and carrier of his genetic memory "know" where the artifact is will take chase after you - where you use the stealth and assassin skills learned by you through your adventures in Game 1's genetic memory testing.

Most of the plot has been released. If you want to figure it out read the book "Alamut" which the game is based off of, from what the Producer of Assassin's Creed said.

Ooh; awesome. It's about time someone came out with a modern day assassination game.

check out the VERY END of the xbox 360 live demo. after the player dies a screen comes up and the producers explains that she cannot talk about what is on screen. if you pause it there, you see its a sort of menu, one of the options is "Memories". the others being hard drive and somthing else that i dont remember. point being, not really anything groundbreaking but its just something that reinforces the games focus on memories.

I'm not sure she revealed anything, there is more information in a PlayStation related magazine I read a few days ago.

Basically the first game is actually someone's memory you're playing in - well, there genetic memory. And the plan is to do a trilogy with the final game being in the future with the 'assassin' whose genetic memory you've been playing in during the previous two.

What we have is a company or person doing historical research trying to uncover the identity of the assassin. The research is being done with genetic memory to try and find the identity of the assassin. Chances are the levels are geared around different subjects and you just play a third-person's retelling of an event involving this assassin.

I think #2's hypo is probably the most correct. There has to be a plot, so it isn't like a modern day company would be trying to just see what he used to be, there probably is some point. Maybe a davinci code-esque thing where they have to unlock some mystery that is centuries old. Or trying to stop a modern day assassination from occurring by hacking into someone who has "cellular memory" of this certain Assassin's cult and they can figure out who is next. Or maybe something in his past holds the cure to a modern day problem, 12 monkeys style.

Or it could just be a way to tell a story. Either way it essentially allows them to go anywhere with the next Assassin's Creed game. So the better question is, what would be another cool time period to be a secret stealth assassin? Maybe like a real modern day NYC or London, but not like the Hitman games. Or like a war that is rarely used in gaming like the 100 years war, war of the roses, napoleonic war, or my personal choice, the french revolution. How cool would it be to storm versailles or run around 18th century paris.
