If, by "It all depends" you mean "If I can't get an emulator and ROMs to work on it", then yes..I pick that one.

A 2D game with actual HD-resolution artwork? Jesus, it would be breathtaking!

All this talk of 2d games and no one mentions any of the great shmups... another Gradius, or Treasure shmup would be fine by me.

I love 2D (Sprites, 3D Models in 2D Environments, etc.)

If a game is long enough, has enough content and challenge, with replay value? Shit yeah, I'll spend $60. Fully 3D games are great, however they feel void of imagination and creativity. There are only a handful of games that utilize the 3D realm properly, and then some, yet to be released, I have high hopes for. (Portal; drool)

You can argue over what types of Two-dimensional games you'd like to see, but nothing beats a good puzzler/platformer. The question is; With the new technologies and capabilities of our current generation of systems, why are we not seeing amazingly detailed and challenging side scrolling platform games? The genre is far from dead, as we can see from the handheld sales.

If they would just utilize their Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and WiiConnect24, we'd be rolling in the online multiplayer twitch-reflex-side-scrolling glory. How.. bonerific, but until then I can only dream~

At least there's many freeware side scrolling games out there, waiting to be played. Here's a list of my favorites.

Cave Story - http://www.gameflaws.com/cavestory/
What an amazing side scroller this is, if you haven't played this, you owe it to yourself.

Lyle in Cube Sector - http://www.sitesled.com/members/bogo/lyle.html
Fun and inventive, so very very nostalgic.

Knytt - http://knytt.ni2.se/
Ambient gaming, hardly challenging but beautiful none-the-less.

Up, coming, and gives me the willies:
The Underside Trailers -

Hopefully with the XNA Club established, we'll see high quality side scrolling goodness oozing out of Xbox Live in a few months, but untill then.. enjoy what your computer has to offer.

Im all for Side scrollers.. As long as the gameplay is good.. This is why I still will play Mario Brothers.. On my SNES and my PSP(while on the road)..

And just cuz its a side scroller doesnt mean it has to be straight 2d.. 2d world using 3d graphics is what I wanna see more of.. Like how Cloning Clyde is for XBLA is..

I didnt vote yes thou.. It still needs to fit my guidelines for me to really enjoy and want to purchase.. Ive been tempted with Clyde but havent..

If there aren't vertical scrolling sh'mups for the Wii I will be a sad sad person. There's allready Super Star Soldier, but I mean ones that utilize the hardware to some extent. Ikaruga shows you can make a game with 2D gameplay really pretty with 3D graphics.

I'd buy good old 2d games, but I voted maybe because I'd love to see 3d rendered, side scrollers. I'd KILL for a new side scroller mario. There is something fun, in a mind numbing "I just feel like gaming, not thinking" kind of way about knowing that there is no question where you are going...right.

I've been aching for a return to 2D style gaming for years now. The first time I played Viewtiful Joe made me truly realize that I've always preferred 2D games over 3D, pound for pound. Unfortunately, there is a huge lack of 2D games in this day and age.
I'm waiting for the day that someone makes a 2D style game with like 50 levels with multiple stages and a SHIT TON of baddies to make your way through. Whoever makes that game first (assuming it's any good) will probably have my money.

One good thing is that Symphony of the Night IS coming to Xbox Live Arcade in a few months.

I agree with an above poster, it's nice not to have to worry about the camera in a 2D game.

Back to Symphony, it showed how cool a 2D game could be on a more advanced system (ie, the PS1 vs SNES) 2D games are more like works of art than their 3D counterparts... Recall however that even in '97 it was a bit of a gamble (that didn't pay off at the time) for Konami to release a 2D game.

BUT they should grow some balls and do it again. Make it for the 360 and have it themed very dark and disturbing, which is something lacking from the portable 'Vanias that keep them from SOTN status.

The portable versions must sell well enough, they keep making 'em. Console price it at $39.99 (like Table Tennis or Test Drive ULTD) and I think people would bite.

I always wondered this. Before 3D games existed what did we hope for in the next game? What did we think the next Mario game would be like after Yoshi's Island? What did the Metroid fans hope for in Metroid 4 before 3D was even a possibility? What did we imagine for FF7 after beating FF6?

I'll tell you what. We wanted more. Just more. Think about how much investment time and money it takes to make a 3D game like Half-Life 2. Great game, wouldn't miss it for the world. However, for that time and money we could have made a thousand maps for Mario World. We could make a game on the Super Metroid engine with twice as many weapons and 10 times as many areas. We could make a 5-part series of RPGs, each one just as large and epic as Chrono Trigger. We could make a football game with the play style of Tecmo Super Bowl and the features of Madden.

People still love these games and play these games. Look how well 2D games sell on the DS and GBA. The Virtual Console really isn't doing it for me so much. The games are good, sure, but most of them are overpriced. If you compare the price of Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube to the sum of its parts on VC, you can see it's a rip-off. The future of the VC is to release games on the Mario 3 or Link to the Past engines with new maps, worlds, enemies, items, etc. Nintendo says that gameplay is more important than grahpics. Prove it guys, make games with merely serviceable graphics and all gameplay and see what happens. I'll buy it.
