Wii Tennis destroys girl's knee
No doubt growing tired of assaulting the smiling, unprotected face of its owner, the Wii console now turns its cataclysmic death beam to more useful parts of the human anatomy. One unlucky lady discovered this during a recent session of Wii Sports Tennis when her knee suddenly ceased functioning in a natural way. According to the testimony on Wii Have A Problem, the destructive console conspired with the high heels she was wearing at the time and ultimately brought her down to her dislocated knee. With the inclusion of an additional photo of paramedics surrounding the injured player, we once again have to consider the possibility of this being a fake injury (and one that could just as easily have occurred in a Dance Dance Revolution session). Perhaps it's time for our savvy readers to confirm or debunk this one. What say you?

Yeah, any dancing title sounds more likely to cause such a injury. Although I guess noone would be stupid enough to wear high heels for such a game.
I guess there's no cure for idiocy.
Dan @ Dec 15th 2006 6:31PM
WOW! some people are stupid. she was playing with heels on her shoes?
Dan @ Dec 15th 2006 6:32PM
I meant high heels, lol.
Dann @ Dec 15th 2006 6:39PM
She was playing with heels on? Who in the right mind simulate playig sports with heels on?
Eggroll @ Dec 15th 2006 6:41PM
Looks like a Wii remote is growing out of her leg.
Dann @ Dec 15th 2006 6:42PM
Wow, bad grammar errors I made.
*Who in the right mind would simulate playing sports with heels on?*
Brian (the REAL Brian) @ Dec 15th 2006 6:43PM
Few thoughts:
Why would the injured person call paramedics for a dislocated knee? Wouldn't it be more practical to have her friend drive her to the hospital?
Also, why would the paramedic be (looks like) taking her blood pressure? This is especially odd considering they've yet to put a knee brace on the woman.
Thirdly, they have an electrocardiograph machine there with them. And it's out of the bag they used to bring it in. Now, I'm not sure how knee injuries go, but I never knew heart attacks came along with them.
Fourthly, why is the one EMT breaking an ice-pak? Typical dislocations wouldn't require a reduction in swelling, they need pressure applied, and then to have the dislocated object (in this case, patella) surgically realigned.
Rob Accomando @ Dec 15th 2006 7:01PM
Further proof that people are generally stupid.
killr0y @ Dec 15th 2006 6:50PM
Brian, besides the fact that you sound like a flippin' conspiracy theorist, paramedics by practice take your vitals before doing anything else. FACT.
Secondly, why would her friends risk moving her around to get to a car? Are they trained EMTs? Do you know how much damage moving someone with a dislocated bone can do to the surrounding tissue? Probably not, judging by the level of ignorance in your post :P
Dirk Dorkelson @ Dec 15th 2006 6:53PM
I'll say it again, Joystiq needs a Wii injury Photoshop contest.
Touch My Box @ Dec 15th 2006 6:52PM
As a person who uses photoshop frequently, I believe this to be a fake image, I'm no expert, but I've got quite the hunch.
chenry @ Dec 15th 2006 6:59PM
The image on the TV seems weird to me. They're not playing, it's not paused... unless it's her serve :P
whatever, hardly the wii's fault she's a dope.
nalgae @ Dec 15th 2006 7:02PM
this looks like a shop. i can tell by the pixels and from having seen some in my time. [/meme]
pete @ Dec 15th 2006 7:09PM
is that shop'ed i couldnt tell you, but what i can tell you is that broad is a freaking pendeja for getting hurt along with all these other cats with black eyes and broken tv, i point and laugh at you dopes
gari @ Dec 15th 2006 7:13PM
weird, there is no need to move your feet to play wii sports.
weirder, paramedics an inch from laughing at her face.
weirdest, a woman letting someone mess up with her clothes XD.
Mikeawesome @ Dec 15th 2006 7:21PM
Man. She's so hot.
...I think.
I know one thing for sure, that knee is hot!
EihBeir @ Dec 15th 2006 7:17PM
It's obviously debunked...Joystiq readers are not savvy.
jchensor @ Dec 15th 2006 8:02PM
If this is real, I'm more concerned about her friends who have completely misguided priorities, so much that he/she/they decided to take pictures of the injury and the ambulance crew and post it on the internet instead of sitting beside her making sure she is all right.
"Wait... wait... hold your knee steadier! The photos are coming out blurry! And stop crying!"
Honestly, if a friend of mine suffered that type of injury, the last thing on my mind would be to bust out the camera to snap photos.
tekkenking @ Dec 15th 2006 7:26PM
did the disc physically get up and beat the shit out of some dumb kid? no? then drop the stupid sensationalist title from this article.
moominsean @ Dec 15th 2006 7:26PM
so fake.... what's with the bizarro perspective on the wii on the floor? and i work in a hospital and see all KINDS of craziness, and I've never seen anything like that without lacerations or abrasions or something. your kneecap doesn't just pop off like that without some MAJOR trauma. I've seen car accidents with everything torn and broken, and the kneecap is still in place. And if it's supposed to be the tibia or something, it's just not right... and no bruising? it's a joke.
mandarin @ Dec 15th 2006 7:30PM
Thats not exactly destroying a knee, its just dislocated. Geez your title needs a little work.
JohnQAnonymous @ Dec 15th 2006 7:34PM
Brian...the real one:
1) I called the paramedics when I dislocated him shoulder. I didn't want to, but when I finally had friends show up who could drive me to the hospital, I couldn't sit up straight without major discomfort. I would have never made it to the hospital.
2) Paramedics taking your blood pressure when they arrive are like the cops giving your your rights before they arrest you. They HAVE to do it.
3) They have an EKG machine there, because you take all equipment with you. It's pretty freaking lame to have to go, "Shit! He's flatlining, I gotta run down to the car to get the defibrillator!"
4) I had the dislocated shoulder iced down, too. When it's a mild dislocation (i.e. no deatched ligaments) you ice it down to keep the muscles in the area from swelling up so the doctor can pop the joint back into place WITHOUT surgery. Otherwise, they swell too much to get the body part back into the proper place.
Geez, man. You're wrong on every single count. At least you know what the patella is. Congrats.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Dec 15th 2006 7:36PM
tekkenking and mandarin: Sarcasm much?
JohnQAnonymous @ Dec 15th 2006 7:37PM
moominsean:
My Calculus teacher/basketball coach in high school told me about the worst injust he'd even seen in his life. Some guy was just running up the court, turned wrong, and bam, his patella just slid over to the side of his leg. Kid's screaming in pain lying on the court. About 15 minutes later, they're wathcing, and foomp...damn thing slid right back into place.
It happens. That's why they're called "freak" accidents.
DannyHibiki @ Dec 15th 2006 7:41PM
Maybe she just has a shitty genetic disorder like I do!
I have dislocated my knee while playing Super Mario World and while playing Tekken 3. Beat that.
Elrando @ Dec 15th 2006 7:48PM
This really has nothing to do with the Wii.
You don't do any sort of physical activity in that sort of foorwear , moron.
DannyHibiki @ Dec 15th 2006 7:56PM
Oh, in case anyone cares, the name of my genetic disorder is Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Just screws up your connective tissue basically.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehlers-Danlos_Syndrome
I think the picture is real, going after my own experiences. The pain is pretty intense, and you don't want to move at all when it happens, so I can see why they called paramedics. I usually have to have someone carry me into a car if I can't pop it back in myself, and it is really tricky to do. It sucks when they have to cut off your jeans. Also, if you aren't a fatty, you can definetly see the misaligned patella (that gross bump) really easily.
Oh, and I was sitting down while my knee dislocated (while playing those games), so her high heels may not be to blame. It tends to affect girls more because our joints are already a little more flexible anyway.
Nate Birch @ Dec 15th 2006 8:21PM
God...
...do we really have to continue posting news stories everytime someone finds a picture of an injury or cracked TV screen and claims their Wii did it?
Wasa @ Dec 15th 2006 8:29PM
funny that i found the strap annoying to mess with every time i wanted a drink or to use the restroom or smoke
so in all my wisdom i removed it
funny even throwing pitches with full force on wii sports, i still have not managed to fling my wiimote across the room, or ping anyone in the head, and definately have not dislocated any part of my body
i guess some people are just born losers or born stupid
the first photo still looks psed in my humble opinion
the second could be actors but i'll leave that for others to judge
anyway, they should start asking people a set of 10 (yet to be determined) questions to determine if the person is to stupid to own a wii
those that are should stick to tic tac toe :)
cheers
Xeroderma @ Dec 15th 2006 8:30PM
These posts are getting boring/annoying Joystiq. This is obviously fake. How do I know? I've suffered a total of 8 count them EIGHT sports related partial dislocations of my right knee. (partial meaning that my knee would actually dislocate but pop back in) and let me tell you...seconds after it would happen my knee ballooned to the size of a softball if not bigger.(After arthroscopic surgery I learned the joints in my knees didnt develop properly and was told i could no longer play soccer >_< ) This girl has no signs of swelling even after what?..10-20 minutes after the injury actually occurred (figure the time it takes to call 911 + the time it takes the ambulance to get there) and not a single visible sign of swelling? Give me a friggen break.
The person that made the point about the friends taking photo's is good also. Can you guys please stop posting this crap allready?
Wolfrider @ Dec 15th 2006 8:32PM
I think it's important that we assume most of these Wii injury stories are fake, including the broken strap ones. Tests have now been carried out on the straps and these things are extremely durable. It's urban myth.
My assumption is this one's fake too.
alexadroog @ Dec 15th 2006 8:39PM
wait...I think that mooostosh wearing guy is giving her the smirk...like he could tell that she is fasking it..or something
rainking187 @ Dec 15th 2006 8:40PM
Wow, first games like GTA cause people to kill each other, now Wii sports messes up a girl's knee? I knew video games were getting more realistic, but damn!
vc @ Dec 15th 2006 9:19PM
"Tests have now been carried out on the straps and these things are extremely durable. It's urban myth."
Ahh, so Nintendo's issuing a recall that'll cost the company over a million bucks because of a myth, you say? Good to know!
Ross @ Dec 15th 2006 9:39PM
When's the last time you heard someone blaming Stanley for someone smashing their finger with a hammer?
I guess calling someone a fool for hitting themself with a white piece of plastic has been replaced by passing responsibility of ones actions on an inanimate object and its makers.
The sensationalism behind the whole thing is hilarious. 2-3 News stories a day about people hitting themselves or throwing plastic at their TV.
Drakkenfyre @ Dec 16th 2006 11:19PM
My theory:
Pic of (an) injury is real, the Nintendo Wii and the screenshot were shopped in
the system is tilted slightly, certainly possible but if it were sitting on the floor, wouldn't it be sitting straight up?
like has been mentioned the screenshot shows a game in play
and if you look closely, where the hell is the Sensor bar? I admit this one is the weakest since the pic is not very clear and it could be hidden ontop of what looks like a DVD player, but still
and the biggest proof? the very article that says the original file name from the poster was "wiiinjuryEDIT.jpg"
there you go right there
-Drakk )))
Ben @ Dec 15th 2006 11:02PM
Hey guys, in all seriousness, this is no joke. I tore one of my feet clean off one time when I did cartwheels while playing my DS. I feel sorry for her, and Nintendo should be sued like crazy for this. I looked all through that manual, and there is absolutely nothing in there that tells me what apparel to wear while playing the Wii, and as a typical American consumer, I can do little more than what I am specifically told to do. Nintendo is 100% responsible, and should pay this woman no less than $100,000,000.00 for her pain and suffering that was their fault entirely.
ben @ Dec 15th 2006 11:17PM
Well, this actually scares me to a degree. I have severe knee problems and actually dislocate them pretty regularly during the course of a year. Maybe I should avoid the Wii. :(
Grog @ Dec 16th 2006 12:24AM
37. "Well, this actually scares me to a degree. I have severe knee problems and actually dislocate them pretty regularly during the course of a year. Maybe I should avoid the Wii. :("
I'm going to try not to make any assumptions based on your name (ben), but let me see if I can pass out some advice based on my (so-far-limited) time in medical school:
Don't participate in any activity (possibly including walking slowly and certainly not anything that involves jumping around) in high heels!
DannyHibiki @ Dec 16th 2006 1:21AM
Ben, don't be freaked out. I dislocate my knee about once a year due to my weird ass disease, but that doesn't stop me from having fun. Don't be a pussy dude. I guess girls do handle pain better than guys.
I'll play my wii if i even dislocate my freakin hip.
Feeple @ Dec 16th 2006 1:36AM
WHY IN GOD'S NAME WOULD YOU PLAY TENNIS IN HEELS, LADY?
Vex @ Dec 16th 2006 6:21AM
Who took that photo? And why =\?
Jim @ Dec 16th 2006 11:31PM
The photo included with this post is as close as 90% of the commenters on this site will get to a real woman's leg :)
skwurl @ Dec 16th 2006 1:19PM
"Ahh, so Nintendo's issuing a recall that'll cost the company over a million bucks because of a myth, you say? Good to know! "
It's not a complete myth, but there are A LOT of fake images floating around.
Nintendo is just being careful. I don't know why, but the fake wii injury trend has taken the Internet by storm - as well as reporting on every damn one.
Just saying.
clanggedin @ Dec 16th 2006 1:43PM
The photo is of a real dislocation, but it has been photoshopped. They added the Wii and the screen. I don't see a sensor bar on top or below the TV. With that TV it would definately be set on top of the TV. I also see no cables going to the TV from the Wii, and the screen has blur around the edges of it.
Nice try though.
Kyle @ Dec 18th 2006 1:33PM
As someone who has dislocated their patella before, I've got to say that the injury looks legit...I've got a comparable picture of myself. To those that would ask "why take a picture?", it's because you've got nothing better to do while waiting for the paramedics, and it's a really cool thing to show to people afterwards.
To those that say "why call the paramedics", it's because that hurts like CRAZY and you can't even move yourself without extreme pain - you need lots of help and a stretcher.
And to the person that claims to work in a hospital and says they've never seen anything like this without major trauma, you obviously haven't seen everything yet. I stepped funny on short carpet wearing socks and down I went...apparently I have an unusually shallow "patellar groove" so I was more prone to this kind of thing. I've got no reason to doubt someone couldn't do the same thing if they were playing their Wii in heels.
Sure it could be fake, but even if it is, this could easily happen in real life, and probably will if it hasn't already.
