I would hesitate to call Joystiq out for this one. They simply posted information, which others then took as a springboard for racist remarks. If someone harbors stereotypes, it makes no sense to shut them out. Rather, dialogue should be opened and opinions should be heard. If you want to elevate the level of internet discourse, don't try to block out a portion of the population simply because you don't agree with them. Instead, take a step yourself to elevate it and try to engage the poster you disagree with. Hiding from racism doesn't make it go away. This is what the first amendment's all about.

An interesting thing about this story is who notes race and who notes the fact that he plays video games; both are irrelevant to his qualifications as a parent.

He has the complete right to say this, because in a sense, Nigger means ignorant. If you punch a baby in the face, you are one ignorant mother fucker no doubt. He states "his name is Tyrone" and refers him to the black culture because Tyrone is a dominant black name. He addes all the facts up and uses the Stereotype Nigger because Nigger also means black person besides ignorant, and was demded that because of the general ignorance of African American's nowadays.

Another reason to believe he is black is because of his common Ebonics, a slang used by a majority of African Americans. For Example, when asked he reasoned using the word popped, a word made popular by the blacks to the meaning hit or assault.

Im tired of people who have no common sense and believe there aren't such things as true stereotypes, especially in the case of blacks, jumping all over people about there RIGHT, THERE RIGHT. You know who's not a racist? The person that realizes it doesn't matter that he's black, all that matters is that HE KILLED AN INNOCENT BABY OVER A VIDEO GAME.

Yes, we Americans have a First Amendment right to free speech. This means that, by and large, you can be as ignorant and hateful in your speech as you like, without fear of institutional reprisal. This does not imply, however, that being hateful and ignorant in one's speech is good, right, or advisable. It also does not mean that such speech is not socially harmful. Many very unethical things are also very much legal.

I will now attempt to engage the bigots in a meaningful dialouge:

You seem to be making the implication that there is a connection between the individual being named 'Tyrone', and his child-murdering. On can infer that you mean that since 'Tyrone' is a name commonly associated with black American males, the individual was a black American male. It seems that you then are suggesting that his race was somehow the cause of the murder (i.e. that you are suggesting that black American males are more likely to murder or mistreat there children than are other parents).

First, is this an accurate assessment of your argument? Second, what is it that makes you believe that persons named Tyrone are more likely than others to abuse their children? And third, have you considered the ramifications of such a suggestion?

What sort of ramifications? Well, I'm referring to the consequences of dehumanizing one's fellow man. Racism functions in a dehumanizing way. The pattern of thought is essentially thus: "Persons of such-and-such an ethnicity are inherently mentally or physically inferior, thus these persons should be thought of as sub-humans or quasi-humans." A similary hateful comment, with the race in question changed, would be something like the following:

"White men are unable to please women sexually because of their absurdly small sexual organs."

See what I mean?

The violent death of a child is atrocious. This man’s utter pettiness and darkness are unredeemable in my eyes. The same with anyone who attempts to place a "funny" spin on the beating of 17 month old female child.

You can loosely connect race to socio-economic class and culture, which you can loosely connect to experiences and upbringing, which you can then loosely connect to someone's behavior.

You CAN do that, but it involves making a lot of completely unfair assumptions about the person in question based on a single factor.

Sure, you can go ahead and try to make a point about how stereotypes are based in true correlations (maybe so), but:

1.when you combine that many weak (or nonexistant) correlations into one stereotype, you no longer have any correlation, just a mess logical leaps and baseless conjectures, and also

2.screw you, you know nothing about this case except the guy's name and one line that he said that could have easily been misquoted or taken out of context. It just goes to show that everything that you base your stereotypes off of in this case is conjecture anyways. Last time I checked, stereotypes and blind assumptions (hypotheses?) did not constitute a strong argument (what the hell kind of scientific method are YOU using?)

It seems that you are implying that a substantial portion of 'black guy[s] in America' have 'more testosteron than brains'. The implication of this somewhat puzzling statment would seem to be that black men in America have too much testosterone, and are consequently ignorant or inferior (do you see the pattern here?).

Is this an accurate understanding of your meaning, el Chino, and, if so, upon what evidence are you drawing this conclusion?

This took place in Philadelphia. The murder toll in Philly is close to 400 people murdered since Jan 1st.

Now, stating that 'sterotypes are often true' is somewhat baffling. As another commenter noted, a stereotype is a generalization, and therefore can neither be true nor false. What I suspect you mean, however, is that the stereotype is valid in that it reflects a real tendency. I suggest you be very, very careful when using generalizations to draw conclusions - they are notoriously problematic when used in the process of deduction.

And no, 'nigger' does not mean 'ignorant' it is an historical term that was historically used to refer to black people, commonly in an offensive and derogatory way, much the way 'fag' is used to insult a gay person.
