Wow? Hideously broken game that looks great as long as you don't move too much. Awesome display of texture tearing and general frame-rate breakdown...

Oh, and then there is the absolutely laughable bad AI. That was the reason I stopped playing. I can put up with framerate issues and texture tearing, but last-gen AI is just a joke, like this game.

Much deserved award for Oblivion.

Yeah, Gears looks (and plays) amazing. Yeah, Twilight Princess is epic and incredible.

But Oblivion was the first game in about 5-6 years to make me go "holy sh--" when first popping it in. Just a phenomenal, once-in-a-lifetime gaming experience. It also has the best use of (lowly) regarded microtransactions....and you could even get by playing the game for a couple hundred hours without the extra transactions. Just an unbelievable game, and probably one of the top 5 games I've ever played.

See i never had a single prob with this game like rjg is talking about. i never new rpg could be so fun, i have stayed away from them for years, just sports, racing, and fps, but my God this game hit it off. I had minor frame rate nothing that slowed down my experience in a way that got me pissed off. everythin looks great, i have 1080 and i have seen nothin like it. You will get lost in this game, its like crack. I dont know agian what rjg was takin about but my AI was tough, i had to think about how to use all my stuff to defeat certain people and multi-people. The game is so huge, freedom is key, there is nothin like it, if i want to kill someone cuz they said somethin to me i kill them, its that easy. i really only get games that have multi player for live but this was on of the best things that i havebought for 60 dollars other then Rjg's mom.

Congrats to Bethesda. You created a single player game so huge i wanted to share it. I wish it ran a little smoother on my PC, but i guess that's my fault.

And BIG congrats to the developers at SCEJ for Loco Roco. Keep giving me free levels plz ;).

Why does Oblivion continue to win awards? I figure that by now people would have figured out that the game just isn't that good.

The game was full of glitches, especially graphically. The Ai was completely terrible, especially after hyping "radiant AI" to death. The game had balance issues. The game, although graphically advanced, absolutely lacked any sort of compelling art style. I sat in awe at the uncreative world bethesda created. From a technical stand point the game looked great, but it was so bland and uninspired that I just didn't want to look at it.

I also thought the game was inconceivably dull, but whatever. It's just....for all the effort Bethesda was thought to be putting into the title, it just came off as half-assed to me.

Yeah Oblivion won buggiest pos of the year. And most bloated too.

Ok game. Nothing that hasn't been done before except for the buggy part.

PC version + mods > 360 version.

better faces, better bodies, better textures, the list goes on... one of my fav in game shots I took on a heavily modded pc version:

One of these days after I finish FF12, Twilight princess, and Okami, I plan on picking it up again...

Some people will never be happy with video games until they can have a Star Trek holodeck. Oblivion was still the deepest, most ambitious gaming experience in 2006. Considering how much time you spend playing RPGs doing something different every time versus same enemies/maps/variants in other games, you get a lot for your money as well. All AI is relatively stupid, otherwise most people would be replace with robots by now.

I'm talking about how if you go anywhere near an enemy they will pursue you without intelligence for hours only to force you to kill it. Wow, that is so realistic, I'm amazed. For example, I was on the horse and happened to pass near a wolf and it started to chase me. I literally (just to see how stupid the A.I. was) continued to ride away from the wolf for 1 hour. I stopped and got off the horse, forgetting what I was doing because so much time had passed... 10 minutes later the wolf ran up to me and attacked me. It's that kind of AI stupidity I am talking about.

Incidentally, if you would like to chat with me in person, let me know, I played college hockey and I'm SURE you wouldn't DARE to say that shit to me in person. The anonymity of the internet makes it easy for little runts to shoot their mouth off.

As far as Oblivion goes, it's just a weak PC port, the 360 is capable of so much more than cheap PC ports (BioShock comes to mind). Something original and well done deserves game of the year, not some typical, poorly executed PC port.

I meant to use Bioshock as an example of a truly original game that is worthy of the 360 - not just a port of an already average/tired game set in an tired genre...

actually, the oblivion AI was turned down for the release... read up a little on the blurb on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_IV:_Oblivion#Radiant_A.I.

"According to interviews given by the developers, the following are examples of unexpected behavior discovered during early testing:

1. One character was given a rake and the goal "rake leaves"; another was given a broom and the goal "sweep paths," and this worked smoothly. Then they swapped the items, so that the raker was given a broom and the sweeper was given the rake. In the end, one of them killed the other so he could get the proper item.
2. In another test, a minotaur was given a task of protecting a unicorn. However, the Minotaur repeatedly tried to kill the unicorn because he was set to be an aggressive creature.
3. In one Dark Brotherhood quest, the player can meet up with a shady merchant who sells skooma, an in-game drug. During testing, the NPC would be dead when the player got to him. The reason was that NPCs from the local skooma den were trying to get their fix, did not have any money, and so were killing the merchant to get it.
4. While testing to confirm that the physics models for a magical item known as the "Skull of Corruption," which creates an evil copy of the character/monster it is used on, were working properly, a tester dropped the item on the ground. An NPC immediately picked it up and used it on the player character, creating a copy of him that proceeded to kill every NPC in sight.
5. In one test, after a guard became hungry and left his post in search of food, the other guards followed to arrest him. The town people looted the town shops, due to lack of guards.

Oblivion is ultimately a very flawed game, Bethesda's tremendous technical achievements are let down by the utterly uninspiring art direction and narrative, and the fact that the more time you play it the less alive the world feels.

Still, I can't pretend I wasn't enthralled for the first twenty hours or so, which is longer than it would take to finish most games.

Oblivion, hahahaha.

That game is the single most overrated and overhyped piece of shit I've ever played. It's a great hiking simulator, I'll give it that. The mountainclimbing is nice, for an hour or so. If the framerate keeps above 5 FPS. Too bad the combat is so mindnumbingly awful and boring it's painful, and every NPC says the same fucking thing over and over using the same three voice actors and the same two or three facial types to the point where you just don't bother talking to any of them anymore. All the towns and inns you encounter are the same copied shit, not to mention the hundreds of identical dungeons. God, how can a dungeon be so boring? You've got the cave type and the manmade type, copied over and over again. And there's not a single fucking thing to do in any of them except take some coins from a chest! I never bother anymore, when I see "you found the cave of this and that" on screen I just keep walking. Same goes for the enemies. I cannot believe how a game populated with thousands of enemies as boring and generic as this could have ever left the initial planning stages.

I, too, can create a few dozen square meters of mediocre, dated RPG, and then copy that a thousand times to create countless square miles of land. But that still wouldn't make it any good.

Yeah, I'm a 'dumb fucking college hockey player' that happens to have a IQ of 143. Too bad you are a little frustrated runt that can't handle the simple fact that other people have different opinions than your own. You're the moron jackass. If you enjoy Oblivion, great, but it's just not game of the year material, that was my point.

1: Nice grammar (u r so kewl - i'm sure you are doing well in middle school, if you are even older than 12 that is)

2: 3 years of MMA - wow, that's a long time, I bet you know how to grab me and throw me down if I approach you in just the right way you expect. Hahahahaha... you are a TOTAL JOKE child.

But thanks, I've copied and forwarded your comments to all my buddies, we are all laughing our asses off at the 'little runt'... very nice!

I don't see what's wrong with micropayments! They work well, when before could you buy brilliant arcade games like that? When before could you download extra content for games? NEVER! Plus you get to download movies, music etc.

At least everyone else is awarding it to TP.

The funny thing is that i wrote the message because i didnt think anyone would read it but whatever. rjg, didnt know you were going to take it all personal and shit. All you have to do is say somethin stupid back, which you did by sayin you would kick my ass because you play hockey. Yeah what is the point of sayin somethin like that. To scare me for some reason. Dont let little things get under your skin kid. maybe because this is the first rpg i have played alot of the shit is new to new to me and i dont have any other rpg to compare it too so if there is something better let me know.
