Publishers expected to have slow 2007
A number of gaming companies have had decent 2006 performances. Ubisoft (EPA:UBI) is beginning to reverse their losing trend as is Infogrames (EPA:IFG); companies like THQ (THQI) are doing well and even GameStop (GME) is enjoying the success the publishing houses are. However, some analysts believe that this is going to be a temporary boost and publishers are going to have a weaker 2007.
DFC Intelligence has stated that 2007 will be a weaker year for game publishers (which contrasts other expectations). This decline is mainly because of the reduction of PS2 desirability as the system will be replaced by the next three consoles as well as a additive effect of third party publishers having had historically poor sales on Nintendo platforms. The hardest to be hit are expected to be Electronic Arts (ERTS) and Take Two (TTWO) as they are too heavily invested in Sony systems (one being in poor supply and the other expected to have declining software sales).
The trend is, however, just part of the console cycle. The year after the new batch of consoles launches has shown to be bad for the game creators. Current gen levels are still low and developers are cutting back on last-gen software development, giving the existing install base little to play. However, with major releases at the end of 2007 like Halo 3 and Final Fantasy XIII (which, ironically, are sequels of the titles that launched in 2001, the end of the second year after the PS2 launched), the slump will likely end there ... that is if poor third party success on a Nintendo console since the N64 doesn't persist.

Which it will.

"Halo 3 and Final Fantasy XIII (which, ironically, are sequels of the titles that launched in 2001, the end of the second year after the PS2 launched)"
Final Fantasy XIII isn't technically a sequal to any previous FF games. And even if it was, it'd be a sequal to XII, not X.
And it's not really ironic; the cycle is pretty consistent. Metal Gear Solid 4 is expected to be out by the end of 2007 as well, and MGS2 was also released in 2001. Cycles aren't ironic.

And also, wasn't 2006 supposed to be a grim year for console sales due to the generational transition.
Gaming media needs to either hold analysts accountable for their predictions (by remembering what they predicted the last time and pointing out inaccuracies) or completely ignore them.

2006 wasn't bad because the wii and ps3 didn't come out until late. This gave the ps2 a lot of life and it beat xbox360 pretty badly (considering its the oldest current system). Now that software is pretty much on the lower instal base of the next gen systems it will unquestionably be lower with very few gamers on them.

Given the spate of crap from Ubisoft and other Wii devs, this trend dont seem to be reversing anytime soon. And, now Mario and Metroid are delayed... whats left for the bulk of 2007? Even the top DS titles are all Nintendo franchises.

Optimus Prime is just trolling again.
Ignore the moron.

Here's to hoping that Oblivion (PS3) makes it out in April afterall, and is good enough to keep us pacified until the drought clears up.
Has anyone heard release dates news for White Knight Story yet?

3rd party success has all to do with the popularity of the console! N64 had it's share of great 3rd party titles (tony hawk, beetle adventure racing) but obviously if you want more cash as a 3rd party dev you can save development time and money by only coding your game for the most popular system.
I think that if the Wii continues to sell like beer that it will lure 3rd parties to make great games.

Uh genius when did that happen. By the looks of the Wii reviews it looks like its doing just what GC excellent 1st party and just rehashed 3rd party games. Hell I only saw good reviews on Madden and Rayman(3rd party).....And that aint saying much. Most 3rd party games will prolly be rehashes. some will work with the new controls and some will feel like crap. contrary to what some are saying the wii mote doesnt make everything better.

Yea! Like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest IX!

Third party who wants to make games for PS3 is waiting for Sony to pick up productions. After that they need some extra time to learn dev kit. it will take some time. But I don't think sales will be slow. Most PS3 owners are so desperate to pick up new games and try out on their 1080P HD set. On the other hand Wii, what I don't understand is the cost for develop a project should be very cheap and easy. All you need is good idea for the wiimote. Wii owners are looking for fun and easy, not beautiful and complicate.
