Same here, I woke up this morning and something caught my eye in my Room. My eyes were still adjusting but I kept seeing a blue flash. Thought I was going crazy for a second, but then directed my eyes to the source and immediately had a smile on my face as I knew it was the Forecast channel. Also, the blue light will light up when you get messages from your friends.

I love my Wii :)

Erwos: Every time someone says something like what you've just said, which is often, they forget that the extra features of the Xbox360/PS3 ostensibly RAISE the console prices, while the extra features of the Wii really don't. That's the difference. If I don't want a weather channel on my gaming console, then at least I'm not paying for it! Get it?

#38 - it actually was 33 degrees in Las Vegas when you woke up!

39 degrees as of 2pm EST. Sounds like the conditions when I visited in February :(

How about you lay off insulting me.

Because you're all so smart, I'll explain why I can't have WiiConnect24 on.

I only have 8 IP addresses, no NAT. I can't have my Wii taking 1 address 24/7.

Okay? Happy now? I can't turn on WiiConnect24.

Additionally, I don't feel like wasting 10W of power 24/7 on it (yes, I am VERY power conscious). The Wii only uses 1W when off, 10W when on WiiConnect24. BTW, my 1st day 360 used 13W in standby and my replacement unit uses 2W.

Again, not using WiiConnect24 doesn't mean the Wii can't reach out to the internet to get my weather forecast. It still has access to the internet when it is on, and it is on when I am looking at the weather channel anyway. My Mac can do this, my Xbox can do this. Nintendo is not measuring up.

---24. "As for Opera - I can't imagine why I'd want to surf the web from my Wii as opposed to the other two computers in the house, but that won't stop me from downloading it anyway."---

Lets see, my 36 inch LCD or my 20 inch LCD.?
And my comfy coutch or my computer chair?

2 reasons right there.
but yes, it will not replace my computer.

"I updated. I still can't get forecasts. It says "WiiConnect24 isn't turned on". I know it's not turned on, it's not an option for me. Why can't I get the weather?"

What do you mean 'it's not an option for me'? Go to the effing setup and enable it. It's a big button. Page 2 I think.

You can't miss it.

Just one thought: I don't even want to think what they will do with Animal Crossing Wii, with features like these.

Bug:

If your Wii is not set to connect to Wiiconnect24 in standby mode the weather channel thinks you have Wiiconnect24 disabled.

Why would anyone leave it connected to Wiiconnect24 in standby mode...I don't know about yours but mine remains very hot in standby mode and I don't need the extra power consumption.

Steve2,

Alright, well then you need to explain that right off the bat because when you just jump into a conversation and start asking vague questions that make it sound like you dont know what you're talking about, people get the wrong impression. If you're a moron then you're a moron, if you have chosen to disable WiiConnect24 then tell us that but dont say "it's not an option" because it is, and you have opted out. Cheers

If you don't feel like being insulted, I advise properly explaining your issue in the first place.

Saying 'turning it on isn't an option' is a tad vague. In your case, it IS an option, just one that you choose not to enable.

2 Questions:

what will be the differences between the trial and the Final? some file types not supported?

the opera site links to the european nintendo site. does that mean the opera browser will only be avalible to Europeans?

I said "I know it's not turned on, it's not an option for me."

It's not an option for me.

I don't owe all you internet busybudies an explanation of my home network. It's not an option for me is very explanatory, and it should be enough for you.

Perhaps the real problem is that like Shagy:
"If your Wii is not set to connect to Wiiconnect24 in standby mode the weather channel thinks you have Wiiconnect24 disabled."

You think WiiConnect24 means just connecting to the internet at all. It doesn't. It means being connected all the time. And anyway, if I wasn't connected to the internet at all (a legitimate reason for it not being able to fetch the weather), how the hell did I update my firmware? Answer, I was connected to the internet, just only why it's on.

You all seem to not understand the terminology and don't understand my post or refuse to take me at my word that I know what I'm doing with my home network and then you want to push it onto me.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother.

Short version:
If you don't let your Wii connect to the internet 24/7 with WiiConnect24, it will stupidly refuse to fetch your weather forecast even when it is connected. Thus, Weather channel doesn't work for me and there's no reason Nintendo can't fix this at some point.

N was caught with their pants down on the network stuff. They're blowing this and need to turn it around. I've owned this almost a month now and they've failed to deliver the browser and news channel to everyone and to me, they've failed to deliver the weather channel too due to an issue that should be fixable.

Now I'm gonna go upstairs and update the Wii here at work. It has WiiConnect24 on, so I will be able to see the weather channel on it. I want to see what it is like.

if you don't want your wii connected to the internet when you aren't using it, you could always turn the console "off" (red power light) as opposed to "standby" (yellow power light) while leaving wiiconnect24 on.

Steve2 did sound a bit hostile overall. I'd be curious to know a) how he knows that the Wii draws 10W in standby, since measuring power consumption from AC gets tricky at such low values -- power factor can have a big effect; b) why he cares about 10 lousy watts -- you can't even buy light bulbs that small, at least not at my grocery store/Target/etc.; c) why he can't just turn off or unplug the unit completely if he cares so much about standby power consumption.

Anyway, my guess is that the Weather channel uses WC24 to pre-cache weather data from around the globe -- I don't think it had time to query all the cities between the time I clicked the button and when the map came up. Frankly, I couldn't care less if it's raining in Paris 99% of the time, so there should be a "offline mode" to cater to people like Steve2 who don't want to use WC24, or who don't have an always-on internet connection. I don't mind leaving it on all the time -- that's what I do with my other computers anyway -- but other people should have as many options as are reasonable to support.

Anyone else disappointed by the crappy "current" conditions setup? Mine has changed twice since I first checked it. It seems to only update every 12 hours. At that point, why even bother having a "current" option? there's already one for the day, and it's basically the same thing.

Waitaminute, didn't Nintendo promise to give *free* copies of Opera to people who bought the Wii early? Or perhaps until July 2007? Does any of this ring a bell to anyone?
