I wouldn't be surprised if they offered it for free for Christmas day only. That would generate lots of hype and allow for profits after the 25th.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo sends SOMETHING as a gift...but it won't be anything significant. It's going to be something like a message to your message board with some sort of little bonus, like a tune or a screen or something. A free game? Not bloody likely. A free game that happens to be one of the most anticipated virtual console titles? Bollocks.

Hmmm ... more than a few people will be opening up Wiis on the 25th... what better surprise than when they plug it in and get a 'FREE' SMB game... brings them back to 1985 and NES.

My issue is that I'll be at my father-in-laws house for Christmas with my Wii but sans WiFi. I don't want to miss out, but I don't think I'll have a choice.

well its possible... maybe a bonus for early adopters/xmas gift buyers that also advertises the VC to non-gamers.. at this point I'm just guessing it'll be a message though ^_^

Sh*t guys, didn't you know ?

Nintendo are going to be sending out some top secret code to the Broadway Processor to "activate" it's "true" potential. Y'see the plan is that when you walk into your front rooms on Christmas Morning, you'll find yourself actually IN Hyrule, or at least a 3D-super-virtuo-psyado-repretentation of it. Then Reggie bums you while Miyamoto cups his sack.

Seriously, my source who used to cut the hedge for this guy who's brother is a publisher..... Well, you get the gist.

It wouldn't be the biggest surprise in the world if they offered up something free to Wii owners. After all they included a bunch of games with the GCN Animal Crossing and we only paid $50 for that. I think a $250 investment warrants at least one game as a thank you to all the Wii owners who have helped Nintendo climb into the #2 spot in the "Next Gen Wars."

This rumor made me think of Animal Crossing too. In Wild World, Nintendo sent gift items to people who logged into the WiFi service on certain holidays. Been a while since I played, so I don't know if they still do that.

Maybe Nintendo will be giving Wii owners something fun, like Reggie and Shiggy Miis (which would be an AWESOME gift IMO ;)) or maybe some free Wii Points to drum up more interest in the Virtual Console. Who knows?

Definitely would not be a first. As mentioned above In Animal Crossing you got a free nes game on your birthday and at Christmas.. here's hoping the tradition continues.

Epic offered a gears video and theme on emergence day. It was only available on that DAY! Nintendo could offer SMB for free only on Christmas day.

Sure they would be throwing away some money, but if they pull it from the VC shop on say on the 26th and add it again in say March of 07 I'm sure it wouldn't amount to too many losses. Just my .02 Lets just say it would be aspecial present for those luckiy enough to get one before 12/26.

Thats odd, i was just thinking before i saw this post that it would be cool if SMB was free. I've had my wii since europe launch and while i am attracted by the idea of buying VC titles..im kinda wary, i want to know how it feels (and LOOKS on my componentless HDTV =/) before i start to waste money on games i pretty much already own, some twice thanks to the GBA.

Honestly,

Offer SMB for free.... causes people to want to get online who might not of.... they buy the appropriate gear, more people to buy other VC games....

Honestly though, they should give everyone 100 VC points... that would be hilarious (help me out though since I have 700, not enough to buy Toe Jam and Earl... but with an extra 100 it would be perfect!!!!!!!!

A little poking around would reveal that there are other sources for this surprise, such as MTV's Reggie Fils-Aime interview, described here: http://wii.ign.com/articles/748/748083p1.html

"Fils-Aime also confirmed that WiiConnect24 would be delivering surprise bonus material to gamers much sooner than anyone had anticipated. "I'd hate to ruin the surprise. Is there activity that we're working on for before the holidays? The answer is yes.""

I predict a Santa Mii, or new Mii clothes and accessories.

Nintendo does this sort of thing with Animal Crossing, so I wouldn't be surprised if they gave you something, but I doubt it's going to be a high-quality free game.

That's a damned fine theory. Free Super Mario Bros. on Christmas. It makes so much sense, capitalize on the whole nostalgia front by giving away the pack in game from the majority of the NES lifecycle. It also serves as a great "first one's free" introduction into the crack that is the virtual console. I know I've found myself buying games I already own the cartridge for just for the super useful "permapause" function.

Besides, they can always sell you Super Mario All Stars at a later date...

This is gonna happen.

I would love to see an upgrade to Mii stuff as well. The amount of customization you can add to a Mii is already amazine, and the first thing i'd like to see is more of that.

Then i'll make a Johnny Bravo Mii ^_^

Christmas is on Monday. The Virtual Console updates on Mondays. If it were ME and I were running a videogame company... I'd think it all just seemed to good to pass up.

FREE SMB w/ a note indicating how to get it = VC introductions for millions of non-gamers = good PR = Smiles all around and millions of happier-than-they-thought-they'd be Nintendo Wii owners = others want in

I wont be surprised if it dosen't happen, but if it does... GREAT move, Nintendo.

I check the the Norwegian VC list with the Firefox hack and found Super Mario Bros. Also found ToeJam & Earl (out on Friday 22nd) and R-Type (out next week in Europe).

But i found one interesting thing, Urban Champion. That game is already out (in Europe) at 500 point. But I also found the game stating 0 points. It had even a different picture and was rated E for everyone. The one up on CV now is rated 7+.

It better be nothing "valuable", or I'll be pissed. There are a lot of us that desperately WANT to buy a Wii, but can't find them for sale anywhere. To miss out on free or exclusive content because Nintendo couldn't ship enough units would be a real slap in the face to those of us who get our Wii some time in the new year when they become available.
