In my mind, Halo is such a different game from GOW that I don't really compare the two any more than I would compare either to Splinter Cell. They all require different strategies & gameplay. It's a matter of execution & preference. The one criticism of Halo compared to GOW that I'd offer is that GOW is much more balanced overall. In Halo2, some weapons and maps were so ridiculously advantageous, that it was pointless one you spawned. I'd like to see them create more variability that not all weapons work well against all enemies & that "weaker" weapons have some other distinct advantage (e.g., chainsaw gun). Also, balance the maps. A little extra carnage would be nice too.

what is up with this? this is HALO 3, the ultimate killer app, and so far it just looks like more of the same. even Resistance: Fall of Man looks better by far.

i sure hope there's a massive improvement.

I love gears of war but its not better then halo nothing is tell me when in gow you can create custome games with all pistols, rockets, snipers, ext and have lots of different game types. Also let me know when they explain the story as hood as halo has or when they make gears of war novels and a movie like halo has.

Why release something pre beta that does not look so great, of all people Bungie? That's internet flame bait 101.

I'll go back to Gears.

Because they know fans of the game don't care about the graphics right now... Its about what is going to happen... Biggest gripes for Halo 2 were not the graphic pops or the small glitches. It was mainly how the STORY ended... I know that they are in pre-alpha, I know not to expect good graphics. I can't explain why I love the games I have just enjoyed them a great deal. What I want right now is just hints and info on what to expect from the story and that is all. I know the graphics arn't done and I know the other fans know that as well. I know they are just trying to give their fans something because we still have a long time before the final release...

Graphics, as all the screenshots before, looked like Halo 2 only sharper.

However, those animations are clearly next-gen. The question will be whether they're scripted or dynamic. Dynamically seeing a Brute rip a marine in half will be awesome.

I'll take less detailed graphics with better animations. GoW looked cool but was all greys and browns with basic animations.

Tell me that wasn't an example of Halo 3 gameplay :S If so, I've just made my decision, I'm sticking with Halo 2 and GOW, the last thing I need is another Halo 2 in my collection :S

Daniel, I am not sure why you are comparing GoW to Halo 1 (2001) and Halo 2 (2004) on a last-gen console, so your logic escapes me.

Let's face the real point behind this trailer as pointed out earlier by a savvy poster: to make potential buyers by a 360 for Xmas. Msoft has a goal to have a 10 million user base by year's end. Granted, there are 10 days left, 5 more before Xmas to make more than 1 million consoles leave shelves. Why not have their best AAA title get a little more buzz to help that goal?

Plus, it was a way for Bungie to get the Brute story fleshed out which is useful to them and those that follow the Halo storyline religiously (like the Covenant...?).

When Halo 3 does launch, Gears will be old news and hopefully they will be working on a sequel to it. But in reality, the two aren't really compatible for comparison, as they offer different aspects which have both pro's and con's we could debate ad nauseum. They definitely have different art rendering/goals (as Gears was more 'real-like' and Halo tends to be more quasi-real per the choice of Bungie).

Lastly, even if Halo 3 launched tomorrow with it's less than stellar pre-alpha graphics, it would probably still be better than 90% of the games on the PS3 or Wii just based on gameplay and storyline alone. But considering how much pride Bungie puts into their product, I doubt we will be disappointed too much when it does launch. Both previous games launched with excellent graphics for their time.

It's almost not visible in the low quality of the posted video, but under the bungie logo you can see
halo3_06436.04.11.09.095.pre_alphabuild.

also Luke Smith at 1up had this to say about a month ago after viewing 17 secs of halo 3's single player.

"Visually, the demo is everything that it should be, considering the quality seen in the announcement teaser from E3 2006. While the game is technically in pre-Alpha with presumably a year left in development, the single-player footage looks incredible, so much so that it might make some people say "Gears of Huh?""

this is the only screenshot of Halo3's single player campaign(alpha build)and it looks damn good.

and that fanboys is what next gen is suppose to look like

Prehaps this little explaination of Graphics will help:

Halo 3 is currently Halo 3 using Halo 2 textures
(Bungie has admitted this freely)

Textures made Gears look so good, every pass from bump to light mapping added realism. The Halo 3 team appears to be working on gameplay, not graphics. Expect major improvments when new textures replace the old, along with new bump and light mappings.

I was greatly impressed with the animations, this game will go far.

Grindstone - to be honest, I'm comparing them because A) Halo 3, to be completely honest, looks a LOT like Halo 1 and 2 (i'm talking in terms of gameplay). Believe it or not, I couldn't care less about graphics. Gears was FUN, Halo 1 and 2 were NOT, and there is absolutely nothing that leads me to believe that Halo 3 will be much different. I was one of the many to buy into the Halo 2 hype; I honestly though it would be amazing, and was honestly and truly so let down once I started playing.

Another reason I compared was because Halo 2 had a ton of hype behind it, as did Gears, and I think Gears exceeded the hype while Halo 2 fell far below it.

I'm not comparing in terms of what each one could pump out in terms of graphics, animations, etc. For me, it will always be about gameplay first and foremost, and you don't need a ton of power for that. Gears had and has the far superior gameplay, therefore, I'm much more interested in hearing about its sequel than Halo's.

Come on. Why can't Gears have the better graphics? We know Bungie pushed the XBox1 but we are talking about Epic here. Epic MAKES the Unreal Engine 3. Half of these guys business is making graphics engines and licensing it. I expect Epic to have the edge over anyone in the graphics department. That goes for Bungie too.

I wasn't talking about the RTS for PC/Mac, I was talking about the original Halo (as you know it) being developed for the PC/Mac. The first person shooter.

I used to work for Gamespy's Halo Planet (previously Battleground Halo), and it was looking revolutionary back then. As soon as they ported to the Xbox and stopped development for PC & Mac it suddenly loooked dumbed-down and ended up having nothing except it's story line. The gorgeous graphics, the new ideas... gone.

They wanted to implement ideas such as near-massively-multiplayer worlds for online play, seamless loading of new areas (no load screens) etc... but none of this ever saw the light of day after Microsoft bought them.

It's a shame it all went so pear shaped really. Sure, Halo is considered the best console shooter ever, but put along side PC shooters like Half-Life 2, Quake 2 etc, it just wasn't anything special.

yeah, because realism like hiding behind crap is really important in the realistic battles held between aliens/bug people. i don't play shooters to NOT shoot. and in my opinion the only 3rd person shooter to pull off a decent camera system thus far is RE4.

Why waste your time defending Halo, you know its pointless -_-" If this is what it is, this is what you get. Have you noticed by giving the brutes pathetic lazer guns they look kinda childish :S if they are so "barbaric" lets see some barbaric behavior! I want beasts that don't give a damn. like the trolls in lord of the rings, now they were barbaric, I wanna see the brutes come charging at you, or throw things at you even if it is a smaller member of thier own squad. I wanna see some anger, hatred!

These brutes are no more butish then my little sister; and they look silly with those guns, if they are meant to be brutes, give them heavy weapons, big, mean killing machines, then I can take em seriously.

Also, I hope in this Halo aliens can pick up your weapons too, cos that was stupid, and I hope they too run out of ammo, drop weapons and look for replacements, that is called on field intelligence and tactics, intinity ammo for the aliens and not you is lame. If gameplay is meant to make up for GFX, I expect to see it when I play it, otherwise I will be very annoyed with my Halo 2 repeat.

why do they have giant brute like characters using little pistol type weapons? Shouldnt they have something a bit more fitting?

What's the point of being a brute if you are just gonna have the same piddly gun as a midget troop?

Anyone who thinks that Halo 3 won't look better than Gears of War is just thinking illogically. 1UP even said after you see Halo 3, you will forget how pretty GeOW was.

Why are alot of people worrying if the graphics would be better than GoW? The 1st time I played Halo 1, I was in awe of how FUN (not beatiful) the game was. Graphics doesn't matter too much if you got gameplay and story nailed down. (like Twilight Princess, KOTOR, Rainbow Six Vegas, etc.)
