Wii = we

I was saying that it will be a less than stellar experience, not that it won't do it.

Just wanted to clarify.

Ain't this the point where some Firefox fanboys point out how stupid he is because Firefox is clearly dominationg on PC and Safari on Macs... Cause they can't sell their slow, bloated web browser that they actually charge for....

Or is that only reserved for Microsoft/Sony esecs.

I don't think it'll be a selling factor, but it's a nice bonus to those who own it.

i sent in two comments to joystiq tellin em the browser is already up here in europe. Its not all that too.
It looks awful with writing thats worse than Capcoms Dead Rising. You can zoom in but it only helps a littl.e
Its nice to be able to watch videos though. Youtubing from the living room will please many I'm sure.

Alas, this feature has already gotten old for me. I'm back on the pc where surfing the web comes naturally.

I must be that fanboy because I'd much rather have Firefox as my browser than Opera. Then again, I'd rather have a browser so I'll take it.

Fantasy, it's where the ps2 was 5 years ago with the linux waffle.

Well, i'll determine that for myself

Personally, it won't be the difficult text, but the more-than-likely subpar load times that will come with the combined slowdown of Wii and WiFi that will likely turn me off

But the fact that i don't have to wait for my PC's 5 minute load time (seriously, takes 5 minutes to boot up(even more if virus scan has an automatic update), really sucks when i just want to check something on Wikipedia) compared to the Wii's 15 second boot time

More than likely, i'll use it for quick searches and random checks on Wikipedia

Although i will do at least one post on Joystiq using it tommorrow

And No: It won't be a draw for non-gamers, just something neat that will go with the console (Methinks the laddies at Opera think too highly of themselves)

Here's the problem with Wii already. Or the browser.. maximum resolution is about 640x480.. but few websites are still designed with that resolution in mind. Most are designed at 800x600. I know that surfing the web on the PS3's 1080i bowser made my eyes hurt, as sites like IGN retained very small text.

it's another excuse for Opera's makers to say "look how much marketshare we just got - we have another million Opera users today alone!"

i'll use it for strategy guides (GameFAQs - make a Wii-friendly section!!!) and maybe some YouTube, but if I ever get a bigger TV it may be of little use due to the crappy quality... (have a 30in LCD right now, looking to go to 50-60in next year)

honestly id prefer browsing on my pc because the wireless connection for my wii sucks, etc.; even though its not far away from my wireless router, but ill try it anyways.

but a question present to any who can answer it: it was never really made clear if this "free" means the opera browser is permanently free if you download it before its too late, or if its free for now as a trial for a few months and then must be purchased. which is it?

For me this is the second best reason to own a Wii. After watching this video:

http://www.gamebrink.com/news/759-Wii_Opera_Beta_Hands_On_Video.html

and reading a little bit about the impressions:

"To make it short, the Wii Opera browser rocks. Text input is fast, webpages load fast, websites look how they would on a computer, and the program even loads fast."

I am very impressed. Even if it were slower and less user friendly, the fact that I can now view internet video easily on my couch in the living room, make it a no-brainer.

I can't get close to this on any of my other systems, including 360 and DS. I can see this really catching on and selling systems. Sony and MS are going to hate the Big N for this one.

I like it, so far, but it has some downsides. I tried to use a browser-based irc client and I couldn't write anything because the Wii doesn't have an enter button and the irc script didn't have a send button (how about "enter"-enabling the 2 button? It's unused!).

Also, if you try to load large pictures (I tried a 2048x1536px picture, size was 380 kbytes) the browser restarts and sends you back to the home page.

Oh, yeah, and it needs tabbed browsing, just like good ol' Opera. :P

But loading times is fast and youtube works, so it's definately gonna be a hit for those who'll actually use it.

Is Nintendo making a mistake here? So they finally go online and what do they do? They put a browser out for their console before online games. I think that's why the DS dominates the PSP because the PSP tried to be everything while the DS focused on gaming. If the Wii doesn't focus on gaming, then it will go the way of the PSP, only supported by the fanboys.

Opera, by default, identifies itself as Internet Explorer on server logs in order to avoid any complications. So the actual number of Opera users on PC is higher than reported (though no one knows by how much).

I am also typing this comment on my Wii i just downloaded then. I get live news daily sent to my Wii and it is so easy to do. Just add WiiNews@gtaero.net to your address book (the PC one). They'll send u another address to enter. Add that too and it is that simple. I get daily Wii news sent to my Wii.

I went out earlier to do christmas shopping and came back finding my Wii glowing blue (always a nice sight) and sure enough i had recieved my daily Wii news telling me PAL territories had the Wii demo available. The only beef i have with it is that on my 50" screen, it doesn't fill the whole screen, it has small borders. And also the text in regular viewing mode is almost unreadable, it's pixilated till I zoom in, then it's perfect. But remember people, it is a demo and will be improved on, but i will use it daily to check out news headlines on joystiq.com and nintendowiifanboy.com

its still a nice thing to have if you already own the wii.

god i hate the psp browser!
haven't tried the ps3 browser yet, but i'd bet the ps3 would be a bit, if not much more better.

oh well, thats my two cents.

I hope it succeeds. Then Microsoft would have to match it on the 360, which would be extremely fast. Of course they make you subscribe for it unless they package it with Xbox Live for no extra cost.

Thing is, Opera may not be reason by itself to buy a wii, but it will give one more person in the family a reason to turn the wii on... perhaps one more reason to take the plunge and buy one too.

And the pointer makes it better than most web tv offerings...

Hey guys I need some help. I'm sitting here in Atlanta, GA and It's about 2 in the morning on Friday the 22nd. Why can't I download the browser yet? Some of you guys already have it. I've been checking the wii shop channel and I keep going to the wii ware section and there's nothing there. Am I even trying to download it in the right place? Please help me, I want to try this out so I can critique it.

They're not gonna make it available at midnight for each time zone. If it's anything like the VC releases, it'll be 9 am Pacific, so you've got 9.5 hours left, but I have no idea when it'll be up. The people who already have it are in Europe.

The only complain I have so far is that none of my favorites have the correct thumbnail, and removing and re-adding them doesn't regenerate the thumbnail.

I just messed with it for all of 15 minutes and it locked up on me 3 or 4 times.

Also has some weird behaviors all over the place... Started a Google Video, switched to full screen (Can you get rid of the bar at the bottom?), then went to a different web page... The audio from the google video was still playing.

Other than that, I could get used to the Wii browser quite well. Surfing sprawled comfortably on the couch is nice. And the pointer makes the experience that much more comfortable.

Oh, and Orb sadly does not work =(
