Suggestion for converting girlfriend - start with the Sims or something on the Wii. If you go the Wii route, remind her that it's a good way to get exercise (but don't say that in a way that'll make her mad at you).

Frag Dolls win a tournament with absolutely no competition. Awesome.

No one plays Rainbow Six Vegas seriously and the Frag Dolls continue to be awful gamers who pretend that by participating in tournaments that get ignored by decent gamers will convince people that they're good gamers.

My little sister won the Halo 2 and Jenga World Championship 2007 last weekend that I held at my house. Where's her article?

Any decent gamer could beat the Frag Dolls with the controller or mouse unplugged, and considering how unwilling they are to accept any challenge, the Frag Dolls seem to be pretty aware as to how awful they are at games.

how old are some of you people? seriously?

yes, females have won a tournament. stop trying to belittle it.

if this story was about 4 males that won the tournament, i'm sure there'd be much ball grabbing and ass patting, amidst a sea of manly howls and grunts that get passed off as cheers.

so what if they're sponsored by Ubisoft. why is this important to begin with? it's not like it's a Microsoft rep telling you to buy a 360 because it's the best thing ever.

anyway, how to recruit your lady to play games? beats me. my fiance plays video games all the time, and she did even before i met her. currently, she's addicted to City of Villains/Heroes, and Oblivion. pretty much any game where you can create your own character. She loves KOTOR 1 and 2 (and has gone through them more times than i have, and they're *my* games). she's obsessed with Silent Hill, but refused to play it herself, instead forcing me to go through it repeatedly for her enjoyment. the benefits are all mine, however, as we should all know by now the aphrodisiacal effects horror movies/games can incite in a lady once her adrenaline gets pumping.

if your lady doesn't play games now, it may be too difficult to get her to try it. and no, the Wii isn't a be all, end all wonder-device that will instantly turn the most jaded cynic into a gamer. my fiance hates the Wii, as does most of the female gamers i know. they think it's okay, but nothing they'd purchase, or even play in their spare time.

they'd much rather play the 360 or PS3.

a potential way to sway your girl, is to 1.) find out what types of things interest her besides the usual. if there is a video game out there that could appeal to that interest, show it to her. playing it first and building up her interest from there. that's how i got my fiance into City of Heroes/Villains. once she saw the character creation, she was hooked. she hated the game at first, but for some odd reason was compelled to complete it, now she can't go without it.

some titles that could appeal to your lady are:

Silent Hill series: they're creepy and like horror movies. as far as i can tell, practically *EVERYbody* loves horror movies.
also try: Fatal Frame, and Resident Evil.

Klonoa 2: Stereotypically cute and cuddly, but it could easily lower her defenses. if she's not a gamer at all, the really simple controls might ease her into gaming.

Dark Cloud series: Also cute, but deceptively full of depth (particularly the second one).

City of Heroes/Villains: Everyone would love to be a superhero. here is her chance to look like a comic book superheroine (if she doesn't already. at least in this she can fly and shoot lazerbeams from her hands). so far, i haven't met a guy or girl who could resist the awesome character creation options in this title. once hooked, play with her so she'll always have someone to partner up with when things get tough.

Oblivion: i personally find this game boring as hell, but my fiance *loves* the do anything, go anywhere gameplay, and is obsessed with closing Oblivion gates. she also loves the character creation aspect.

KOTOR series: Star Wars is cool. Lightsabers and Jedi are really cool. this title will feed her good or evil tendencies, Star Wars style. it's no coincidence that
this game, also, features some character creation.

Baldur's Gate/Champions of Norrath series: These games are simple and addicting enough to get her hooked. hacking and slashing and leveling up does things to the brain, as does random item collecting.

Lego Star Wars: this game has special powers and is charming beyond belief. she'll be hard pressed not to find them adorable, and keep from chuckling at the well executed humor, even if she doesn't quite dig Star Wars.

Primal: she may not play it, but the selling point for this title is that it stars a regularly proportioned, and capable female lead who doesn't take crap from anybody and has to save the guy, instead of the other way around.

Beyond Good and Evil: also featuring a realistically proportioned and strong female lead, this game has simple controls, a great story, and beautiful, charming visuals.

the Prince of Persia: the prince is agile, strong, muscular, and can do cool moves. she'll never admit it, but his gruff demeanor probably turns her on. she may not want to play it, but she'll have no problem watching you slice, dice, flip and leap through the three adventures. the excellent story and narrative will also keep her intrigued.

that's about all i can think of to recommend right now, but they're all worth a try.

if she doesn't dig games regardless, don't worry about it, you'll just end up fighting over who gets to play with it anyway (it's why we have two TVs, and she gets the X Box and i get the PS2).

too bad it wasnt an official "pro" tournament, as the prizes consisted of a pair of headsets. This news story is FALSE, and is only another attempt at the full female gamer teams to try and act like they can compete with a full squad of guys who actually play the same game. I gurantee that if the teams they played in this tournament didnt consist of only pc-gamers that decided to play these on the side for fun, then they wouldn't have won. nice try frag dolls and PMS, but the true gamers know what is trying to be pulled.

It's great that girls won a tournament. The problem is that these girls get a lot of attention for being mediocre gamers and do their best to present their consistently lackluster performance as if they were any good.

The CPL will host a tournament for ANY game as long as someone is willing to put up the prize money. There hasn't been a single Ubisoft game (Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon/Splinter Cell) that has had a tournament that wasn't funded by Ubisoft. This tournament didn't even involve enough prizes to get someone to travel from out of town, let alone state.

So Ubisoft's sponsored girl team wins an Ubisoft sponsored tournament for an Ubisoft game that was attended by no one except a few locals? That's news?

People who win big gaming tournaments deserve praise, yet I don't see any mention of the folks who won the real tournaments ($100k+ in prizes) at the CPL that happened the same weekend. Why is that?

Why would people care more that a group of girls won a tiny tournament with no competition than gamers that won tournaments that involved hundreds of competitors from around the world?

"Girl gamer" groups like this claim they're trying to promote equality when the only reason they're getting any attention is because of their desire to remind the world they're not equal. Here's an idea, place well in a real tournament, then talk trash about how you can beat up all the "boys". That's equality.

With groups like the Frag Dolls and Clan PMS, they talk trash, claim they're great, and then are never able to back it up.

It's a shame that the "gaming press" is so ignorant as to how these self-promoting girl gamer groups. There are plenty of great girl gamers out there, and not a single one has anything to do with groups like the Frag Dolls or Clan PMS.

Huh... looks like my first comment was eaten.

The headline is wrong. The Frag Dolls didn't win a CPL tournament, they won a VGL tournament. VGL sanctioned and ran the tournament, all CPL did was share the venue. CPL doesn't sanction console game tournaments; they're a PC gaming league.

Let me just first say...zero respect for the winning "team". Why, you ask? I shall explain:

Let's say, for example, I and three of my friends were to enter into a Halo 2 tournament hosted by Microsoft. Now, this tournament would be taking place just after Halo 2 had come out. However, thanks to the beauty of sponsorship, we would have been able to practice on the game at least 6 months before it actually released.

Now, "tournament" (a.k.a. unfair matchup time) time comes around and we fly down, using tickets MS and Bungie bought us, to wherever the tournament is going on. We show up wearing Halo 2 shirts, caps, shoes, socks, etc. We sit down in our reserved, padded seats with the Xbox logo on them, and wait to be challenged. In comes Timmy and three of his 12-year-old friends. They just want to try out the new game so they decide to play us and, like the total jerks we would be, we waste them all and start trash talking. Basically, what this article is saying is that it would be acceptable for the above to happen, and would also warrant our pictures and names as front page news. Stupid. Moronic. Typical corporate-sponsored B.S.

And the saddest fact of all? Nobody would have cared if that tournament had taken place. Because I'm a guy. It's only when you are a girl (I refuse to refer to people who act as immaturely as these so-called "gamers" do by challenging sub-par opponents as women)that the world should stop and everyone should bow their freaking heads and take notice. And if they don't, well, damn it, you aren't being treated "as an equal!"

We all know that this group wouldn't accept a random challenge from an Xbox Live clan. Because they can't. Because they know, as does everyone else, that they would get waxed and that's the end of it. So, my advice would be to continue to hide your severe lack of anything even remotely resembling skill by only attending fixed events thrown by your sponsor. Give me a freaking break.

P.S. - Matt's post were the best in this thread. I wish more people would open their eyes as to what is REALLY going on here.

P.P.S. - If you think all those girls are pretty, you should get out more. When you are representing a multi-million dollar company, believe me...they can make anyone look how they want. Hence the term "sell-out" comes into play.

"I wonder if you wouldve cared/made that comment had the team only consisted of males..."

As stated before, if the team was all male there wouldn't have even been a news story so it would have been impossible to comment.

My comment had nothing to do with them being female, it had to do with them being sponsored by the exact same company as the one who made the game.

Well, Matt has already perfectly stated the problem with this article.

All I can add is that I have played fighting games competitively for many years and attended countless tournaments including national and world-wide competitions sponsored by Namco or Capcom. I even won quite a few of them. In those years I have seen a number of female gamers competing in these competitions. None of them were any good, but they got jocked like there was no tomorrow. They were also attention whores, so it worked out quite well.

This seems to be the case here, as well. These Fragdolls are just attention-whore mediocre gamers. I mean, why is it necessary that every article I see about these people has to include a photograph of the team or headshots of each member? Why is it that they've just won their first competition, yet I've been hearing about them for years?

Competivive gaming is about COMPETITION. Real champions crave the challenge and savor the victory because they've defeated all comers, not because they're going to get attention.

Disclaimer: Women have the potential to be champions just like men do when it comes to gaming. However, these people are not champions.

Also, anyone who thinks these "women" are hot is insane. These are professional photographs and I can still barely tell if I'm looking at women or partially shaved gorillas.

Matt has some good issues, but no one seems to have mentioned that PMS Clan did win 2nd place for Gears of War. The Girlz of Destruction also attended CPL. One of the women, Trito, made it to the top 32. Not all girl gamer groups are there for attention.

I run an online website for women gamers and I make it a point to make sure the site does not become a myspace full of pictures and headshots. Our site is purely about gaming. Thoughts on gaming, tips, and getting together to game.

I also agree to some extent that Frag Dolls should have cleaned house since it is their game. But do not discount groups like PMS Clan, KSI Sirens, Girlz of Destruction and many more that work really hard to compete.
