Make your own colored Xbox 360 controller
Sister site Xbox 360 Fanboy posted this very nice custom black Xbox 360 controller created by reader Alcaron. His site has step-by-step instructions on how to create the controller using vinyl dye to actually dye the shell itself. After you do this, it stays forever. Unlike spray paint this stuff isn't just a coating. The best part is that any vinyl dye will work, so you've got many color choices -- wait, not best part, the best part is that the mod costs about $5.The vinyl dye is available at almost any auto supply store and finally having a controller to match your favorite Xbox 360 faceplate is nice. It's the perfect project to do with the kids (offspring, sibling, niece or nephew) in your life over the holiday. The vinyl dye is toxic so adult supervision is strongly recommended and make sure to follow the detailed instructions.

WTF? The black 360 controller is "colored"? Is this the freakin' 50's? I always knew joystiq was racist>:(

I don't know. I like the XCM controller shells better. Though 5 dollars is hard to beat. I might try it.

Who's joking? As soon as I find their headquarters I'm planning a march. I would start a boycott of the site, but I can't until I find out if the Xmas day VC games are going to be free or not.

Some ms bitch is going to color it shit brown so it matches his shity zune.
kip @ Dec 21st 2006 8:31AM
Why it gotta be about color? Is a black controller really any different from a white controller, or a red controller, or a blue controller? Can't we all just get along?
fishamaphone @ Dec 21st 2006 8:56AM
Does this paint also work more or less the same for other consoles' controllers? Obviously, controllers that start off light-colored are going to work easier than, say, a controller that's *already* black, but do the different companies use different kinds of plastic so that this wouldn't work or something?

I did the same thing a few years ago with my GameCube Wavebirds. I made one pink for my wife and one black to match the console. It also made it easier to tell which controllers were ours if we ever took them anywhere.

Here is how you do it...

DeezNuts420 @ Dec 21st 2006 9:43AM
Sweet. I ordered the XCM X-Green Full Case Yesterday, and wanted to order the Black controller case as well. The only problem is the battery still being white. Problem solved. Thanks Joystiq!!

You guys make me laugh, but I'm crying on the inside.

@DeezNuts420
I am not so sure I would attempt to use toxic vinyl dye on a battery..... There is just something that sounds very... not safe about the whole thing.
pixelate @ Dec 21st 2006 10:47AM
If you read the instructions, apparently during the curing process the plastic becomes so soft that "you can literally take your fingernail and scoop soft plastic right off the surface just after you spray them."
Yes, yes, be careful and all that-- but someone should take advantage and think up some kind of symbol or brand (as in, cattle brand) to embed on the surface while they're painting. I'm too lazy to try myself.
mykie @ Dec 21st 2006 3:37PM
wonder if this can be done on the Wii remotes as well?
DeezNuts420 @ Dec 21st 2006 11:00AM
@13 I will only be spraying the backside(Visable) of the battery pack.
I am thinking of doing the Media Remote, and Possibly....the Wireless Headset. Although the headset is risky as hell.

Anyone know where to find security screwdrivers that will fit the screws on the controller? I have the right kind screwdrivers but the screws have that annoying little nub in the middle. I asked about them at my local ACE or whatever but no luck.

THATS RACIST. THATS RACIST THAT RACIST................WHERE IS THE HR DEPARTMENT?
That would be the scene if I showed this article to someone at work.

lockey @ Dec 21st 2006 2:42PM
Those screws are called pin torxs. They look like a size 6 or 8.

lots of hate i sense in you, LOL

Silky,
I think, *THINK*, he's saying 'colored' as in 'has been colored with paint or crayons,' and the color he chose to color his just happens to be black. I bet many an angry post would have been avoided if he's chosen pink or something. Pink is the color of vaginas! No one's mad at vaginas.
And vinyl dye is something you SHOULD ALL KNOW ABOUT. Stinky and poisonous, but amazing for projects like this.
Just don't get any on your hands. You know. If you like it up there at the front of the bus . . .
