nintendo's hype will die down soon enough. sony will certainly pick up the pace within the next year with all the good games coming out. although the ps3 should will do well, it will have lost a significant share of the market to microsoft

The only reason Wii sold well is because the GC, on which is based, basically sold ZERO for the past year and a half. There was pent-up demand from fanbois for a new Nintendo console that was actually viable (or marketed as such) in the marketplace. They needed something to rally around since their precious GC was getting squashed in the market. So, here it is.. once the fanbois get their consoles, who will be left to buy wiis?

PS3 doesnt need to be the top gun this year or even in 2007 because PS2 which will continue to outsell all home consoles well into next year. At some point, there will be a transition and PS3 will be the dominate PS console.. this is the benefit of supporting legacy consoles.

Yeah, 2006 was just sad in general for Sony. However, in retrospect, Sony hasn't really been that innovative in a long time. Sure the PlayStation is a great system (originally dreamed up by Nintendo, mind you) but the company is more about taking the IP of others and simply trying to steal the thunder.

Hopefully in 2007 the company can really develop some prime IP and not keeping looking at competitors for source material.

"Keep the hate fires burning!!" lol!
A guy at work finally got his pre-ordered PS3 from "Game Crazy"(another EB-like ripoff place)last week and it would not accept discs of any type. When he tried to play a downloaded demo, the screen went black after the playstion3 logo. Store would not take it back, Sony RMAed it, offered him a copy of socom2 for ps2 for his trouble. Now with Virtura Fighter 5 leaving PS3 for 360, the Square/enix exodus is all that is left to wait for.

So Sony has the top-selling console of the year in the PS2, and so far they sell every PS3 they make. Yeah, 2006 sucked for them. I love this little bizarro world so much of the gaming press apparently lives in.

The PSP is really the only bit of "bad press" that matters, because that's the only bit of gaming machinery they make that isn't selling.

I think the Sony flame war has hit critical mass and is currently self sustaining.

No doubt they screwed the release up something royal; however, according to recent articles...posted here. It doesn't appear that the botched release really hurt market share. People with ps2's continued to purchase ps2 games. I'm sure for some the lack of ps3 caused a few to move to the 360.

The Wii was a great launch. The Wii's are selling for pocket change when compared to the 360 and ps3. A Sony customer moving to a Wii may not be lost forever.

Stick to TV's and sound systems, Sony. Yes, even give up in the whole Vaio thing. Over-priced POS computers and "entertainment/video game system."

You really think a lot of people will pay $600 for a console? Guess again.

Do Joystiq bloggers hold a lottery or raffle to see who gets the much-coveted job to reprint the daily anti-Sony news?

It must be quite a mob scene in the morning... "I want the Time magazine negative review of the PS3!" or maybe "Ooh! I want the NY Times one! They say Sony's going bankrupt!"

One thing's for sure - if the PS3 does wind up #1 in a year or two, it won't be for lack of trying (to prevent it) by Joystiq writers.

Sure, PC World. Sony "failed to drive a stake through the heart of Nintendo..." during the first MONTH of the PS3 being offered, during which sales were low due to supply, not demand. Are these publications written by fanboy teenagers or just really stupid middle-aged white guys who don't play video games?

btw, Todd: The PlayStation wasn't "dreamed up by Nintendo." They contracted Sony to create a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES. Nintendo reneged on that contract a year later, having secretly worked with Philips instead. Sony decided to continue their work, evolving into the first PlayStation. Nintendo didn't do anything except sign on the dotted line and pull a fast one on a fellow company, eventually resulting in Sony handing them their asses for the last two generations of gaming.

I'm sure i'll get the "fanboy" tag, but i'm sick of reading this kind of premature speculation. I'll buy whatever systems offer the most appealing games...right now, the Wii isn't on that list, but who knows what'll happen in 6 months?

@awiifemale.. i didnt say you needed to own a GC or anything Nintendo. If you're looking for a Nintendo or non-Sony/MS console, you would be a moron to get a GC, so you wait.. for... what?.. a wii.. thats what.

A lot of that demand is people waiting around for it because Nintendo hasnt has a marektable console in over ten years.

Whereas, everyone else (non-nintendo fanbois) can pick up a viable PS2 knowing that games are stil being released for it.

See the difference? No, stay in school then.

filterpunk: You do realize it was really Sony that pulled a fast one on Nintendo with regards to the Playstation, right? The way the contract was written, Sony would have had complete control over both the hardware and software developed for the system. When Yamauchi found out about it, he was furious and ended their relationship with Sony.

At any rate, all the negative mainstream press is Sony's fault for promising everybody the world when in the end it's just another console that thus far hasn't lived up to those promises. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are all prone to hyperbole, but Sony's was at an epidemic level and those in the mainstream press picked up on that and are now calling Sony on it.

Fred T: Get over yourself. All you have to do is look at any lineup for the Wii, any mainstream news article about the Wii (read: not hardcore and likely not having allegiance to any of the three companies) and you'll see plenty of people who are either nongamers, lapsed gamers, or anybody else outside of the scope of gaming who are generating just as much demand for the console. The "Nintendo fanbois" did pick up a Gamecube and they did pick up a Wii. But it's painfully clear that they're not the ones having an impact on its continued demand.

#17: "A lot of that demand is people waiting around for it because Nintendo hasnt has a marektable console in over ten years."

This wins the award for "Illogical Argument of the Day" If Atari hasn't had a marketable console out for over twenty years, does that mean if they release one now, people would be *twice* as eager to buy it than the Wii? The longer a console goes without something marketable, the less likely they are to ever do it again. It took something just short of a "revolution" to pull this off, so don't insult everyone's intelligence by suggesting otherwise.

Like it or not, the success of the Wii is no cosmic accident. After all you can't spell "wii" without "a-g-g-r-e-s-s-i-v-e-a-d-c-a-m-p-a-i-g-n."

I have to say I thought the PS3 wouldn't be able to hold a candle to the 360, but I'm extremely satisfied. I was ho-hum about the PS3, but now I'm loving it! Is it better than my 360? Sure in some areas. But the 360 is better than PS3 in other areas. I'm happy with them both.

I would like more games for the PS3, but I'm having a blast playing Lemmings and the geometry wars knock-off (which isn't much like geometry wars at all). Oh yeah and the Motorstorm demo rocks.

The browser is absolutely awesome! I thought I would get tired of it, but it is great surfing and checking email from my couch.

As for Sonys decision to include blu-ray, I am thankful they did. It forced me into the high def dvd arena and now I'm going to get the 360 HD-DVD drive. If I didn't have a taste of high def movie goodness through the PS3 I would have never considered buying the hd-dvd drive.

I'm 21 years old, with a limited budget, and a 32 inch standard def tv set. I probably represent a good majoriy of the people that play video games (mostly the standard def tv part). Why should I (or anyone in my situation) pay $200 more for a ps3 when the same games are out on the 360? I mean, I'm still rocking my xbox considering I don't have an hdtv I don't see the point in even going to a 360 until support is completely dropped and im forced to. When I do get an hdtv, I will then make a choice based on quality of games.

More like it was too early.

In retrospect, I think that the bad press will subside like it did for the 360, people just choose not to remember the bad press that the 360 received as well in a biased fashion just to jump the ps3 hate bandwagon. Obviously, the ps3 failed for 2006, with the lack of units and hd problems, but those aside, its in the same situation that the 360 was. I fully expect a complete recovery by mid-2007 through means of mgs4 or otherwise.

I am a MS fanboy, just to get that out of the way. But, I in no way wish for MS or any company to dominate. I honestly think that Sony will pull out of this slump, because the brand name is just too strong. They made a great product, and in time it will catch on. The reason I don't like the games is because I am not a huge fan of JRPG'S or Platformers, which is the main focus for Sony's consoles. Its just a matter of taste, thats all, doesnt mean they arent good at what they do.

Here's the thign Xbots....the handwriting is already on the wall, and xbox is losing. The theory was that anyone who was deciding between 360 and PS3 was waiting until they could see both then decide. If the PS3 is really such a bust then 360 sales should be through the roof as the now enlighted buyers buy the 'superior' machine.

But wait, 360 sales are not through the roof, because people have seen both machines, and they are waiting for the the supply of PS3s to increase. Most of xbox 360 sales came when it was the default 'next gen' system. All of the PS3 buyers have chosen it knowing what the competition had to offer. Microsoft should be concerned about all of their non-sales throughout the holidays, since it shows the PS3 is going to continue to sell out all units that are manufactured. The only hope 360 really had was the desperate parents who needed a 'next gen' system for christmas and couldn't find a PS3.

Wishing will not make it so poor uninformed xbots...

Vonwag,#26, you are why I have problems with Sony fanboys. I posted a reasonable and logical response to the story, whereas you posted a rhetorical and emotional response. That is the difference, because you want Sony to totally dominate. You think that everyone should like the same games that you do. That is my problem with the likes of you. To be honest, obnoxious Sony fans are partially responsible for me ditching Sony.

As an owner of a PS3, Wii, and a 360......I'll just tally how many hours this week I've played with each system since sunday:

XBOX 360: 12 Hours (Rainbow Six + GoW + Halo 2 + Madden....all online play)
Wii: 4 Hours (Zelda + Trauma Center + Wii Sports)
PS3: 2.0 Hours (Resistance....+ ANOTHER PATCH)

About sums it up....

Note:
WTF is up with Sony's ONLINE System being the still shoddy POS that PS2 was.....YOU HAVE TO MAKE A SEPARATE BUDDY LISTS OER GAME...AGAIN?? (See RESISTANCE)

If this is what free Online is like....I'll stick to XBL thank you.

I tend to agree that Nintendo stole Sony's spotlight this year. Very brutal tactic by Nintendo. Keeping the release secret til the very end, then releasing it days after the PS3. Just another reminder that Nintendo executives are very smart in the business. Hell, look how many times they have sold you Mario (Again on monday).

Tho, I don't see it as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I have heard very few "legitimate" stories of bad PS3 hardware, they are patching in functionality (even tho one may argue it should have been there to begin with), and they are feeding a nice constant trickle of supply to the consumers. Also, Sony has been selling out of all the PS3s it ships to stores. Granted the Wii, took Sony's ebay glory :)

One might also agrue that the PS3 did not arrive to late, but that the Xbox 360 arrived to soon. The Xbox 360 sales have been dwarfed by the current gen sales, and have not had an amazing year in sales until November. Soon I expect a good spike in the Xbox 360 sales as the current gen begins to fade out even further.

Lastly, Price is still a major factor. The PS3 is a wonder piece of gaming equipment and games making the system worthy will definately be released soon. The Xbox 360 may have a wealth of games but even now only a handful are worth owning. Both libraries will have tons of time to improve since this generation has just begun. To think that the PS3 would not have a good library is foolish. To think the same about the Xbox360 is equally foolish. (exclusive library I have to add)

panadero: Sony would've been able to release their own Nintendo-compatible console which also played Sony's CD format. Nintendo agreed to this and Sony started their work, but a full year later, Yamauchi finally read the contract his company agreed to. By the time he started paying attention, Sony was already exhibiting their work, only to be backhanded with an announcement from Howard Lincoln (I think that's who it was..) about their agreement with Philips.

Putting aside history, I agree that much of the negative press is Sony's own doing. What I don't agree with is the double standard being applied. Microsoft has done countless things to screw customers or piss people off, yet their console division is often treated like a separate entity. Yet with Sony, issues regarding DRM or rootkits have mostly involved Sony BMG, yet SCE is often treated as synonymous with it.

Having worked for large corporations, my experience has generally been that separate divisions have virtually *zero* involvement with one another. High-level execs might interact, but any info they receive is generally "filtered for management" - i.e. give them a non-technical description rather than jargon. Terms like "DRM" and "rootkit" may be meaningless to a lot of execs, but reduced to "piracy protection" or something? That's all they want to hear. When things blow up in their face, it's a black mark on everyone, but it's presumptuous to claim that the entire organization has faltered and will follow suit in those kind of idiotic decisions. I wouldn't say that a manufacturing delay is on the same level as CDs that contain rootkits.

It's also important to note that since Kutaragi was swapped out, Sony is in a transition period of sorts. It's not a matter of "The PS3 is a bust," it's a question of whether or not Kaz Hirai can rebound from these initial mistakes and make the system a success.

I am upset with Sony, and not just because it screwed up, it was a matter of when it screwed up, it seems as though if you rattle them they drop the ball, at a very important time. And also the subtle nuances they pull such as fewer units being shipped to the US than Japan, and the price drop in Japan(although small) begs the question, If they are fighting to keep a hold of their US market then why would they do this? Well because they can, it seems as though Sony has a lot of breathing room in this market. I respect MS and Nintendo because they delivered what they promised. I am mad at Sony for promising the world and not delivering. Is it wrong to point this out? I say no.I also dont like the argument that just because Sony is more powerful it is better, Sony fanboys and journalists were saying the exact opposite with the last gen of consoles and it was true. Even though MS managed to fix all of it's bugs very quickly and the Wii only having a problem of causing damage to TV's or friends so far(which I think is funny, if your not laughing then you should be). It is unfortunate that we as consumers would allow such a mistake to go unpunished with our spending dollars, as the market leader Sony has a responsibility that others don't.Remember folks, love is blind. you can quote me on that if you like. Also if im wrong on any previous statements, please be gentle I bruise easily

Wow, look at all the fannyboys on both (OK, all three) sides of the fence here. Why *defend* Sony? For that matter, why *attack* them? It's clear that Sony's done enough screwing up on their own, and yeah, they deserve what they're getting right now. Nobody except a few fanboys like or want the PS3--I was literally at a wal mart when they closed a few hours ago with 2 *pallets* of PS3's still sitting there unbought. Let's face it, if you can't sell your product on Christmas eve, you're in trouble.

The bright side of Sony losing their dominance is that it's good for the market, and it's good for consumers. What it means is that come PS4, they'll have had an ass whipping to remember and they'll treat gamers right instead of this retarded attempt to turn gaming into some sort of Elitist activity that only the rich can afford.

Nobody should stay on top forever. 2 Generations is *enough*.
