Resident Evil 5 plays hot & cold
The following Resident Evil 5 details have traversed three languages (from Japanese to German to English), so accept with caution. According to Famitsu Xbox, via GameFront, passed along by GamersReports, Capcom won't release the next Resident Evil until 2008, stalled in part by an effort to get the game running at 60 fps. While the game will attempt greater environmental interactivity, more interestingly, Resident Evil 5 will allegedly feature hot and cold weather changes, affecting certain (unspecified) gameplay mechanics (possibly dehydration, frostbite, etc.). Developers are also focusing on enhancing character models, including facial muscles capable of a full range of expression, and realistic hair and skin rendering.

Let's hope it lives up to RE4.
quicksilver @ Dec 22nd 2006 12:39AM
So is this for sure not coming out on the Wii, and is it for sure going to both PS3 and Xbox 360?
Also, hows RE: Origins coming along (for the Wii)?
Sonic @ Dec 22nd 2006 12:44AM
I can't wait till beautifully rendered hair makes games funner to play.
chudgoo @ Dec 22nd 2006 12:44AM
While I love the idea of a more realistic and engrossing Resident Evil; I worry that players will find themselves caught up in distracting elements much like MGS3:Snake Eater had. (I LOVE Snake Eater but found the healing process a tad distracting...especially during The End)
Sometimes too much realism can be a bad thing.
Have any details about the scenario/story come out yet?
It would be very interesting to see what direction the series takes from RE4...

@ Sonic:
"I can't wait till beautifully rendered hair makes games funner to play."
Oh, give it a rest. We get it. You're content with pong. Fine. A lot of gamers (including myself) appreciate graphical details (such as realistic hair). You can pretend it doesn't affect the fun factor of a game all you want, but don't criticize a developer for at least trying to creat a more engrossing experience just because you feel that certain details are unnecessary.
I suppose you would have been perfectly satisfied if Twilight Princess had 2D NES graphics, right? This whole "graphics don't matter" trend is really starting to get on my nerves.
Revo @ Dec 22nd 2006 2:28AM
It's not "graphics don't matter", Rare Hare, it's "gameplay over graphics". Of course graphics matter, they help immerse the player in the game. But they shouldn't take priority, and it's probably not worth delaying a game for a minor graphical upgrade. And believe it or not, there is a middle ground between being okay with NES sprites and being caught up in the latest in hair and skin rendering.
Rubang @ Dec 22nd 2006 2:32AM
I can't wait until I can control beautifully rendered hair with my Wii remote, and maybe blow on it with the GameCube microphone that came with Mario Party 7. Then it will be the perfect match between amazing graphics and the ultimate in immersive gaming experiences. Everybody wins.
...We'll call the game ShitGame.

Will everyone relax. I thought the wii60 concept was supposed to mend the bitter divide between the gameplay and graphics people. I have to tell you, between with these two machines plus the DS, I feel like I'm living in some new golden age of video games. It really doesn't get any better.
And yes, the wii is getting it's own RE game:
http://wii.ign.com/articles/732/732520p1.html
Personally, I wish I could freeze myself until the time that both the wii RE and xbox360 RE are released.
p.s: Rare_hare: I think many many years will have to pass before RE4's graphics can be considered pong-primitive. And that was on the gamecube, which was only half as powerful as the wii. RE:Wii is going to look plenty good.
Lekko @ Dec 22nd 2006 3:03AM
you know, when it comes to the undead, one would think that skin modeling would sorta become a moot point seeing as half the time on zombies it is missing anyways. Muscles, on the other hand, are key.
michael black @ Dec 22nd 2006 4:01AM
WTF? Has Capcom been secretly bought out by a hair saloon corporation?
Fester @ Dec 22nd 2006 4:09AM
2008 it is then, if it means they are making a proper quality title (60fps no tearing) with amazing graphics on top of the great RE4 style gameplay then it will be worth the wait! :)
vozome @ Dec 22nd 2006 4:24AM
Right on, Rare Hare. And Revo, I don't consider 60 FPS to be a minor graphical upgrade. If there had only been new story developments, additional content and gameplay options in RE4, with the game on the same technical level than RE0 or the outbreaks... It would have meant the end of the series. Instead, Capcom took the time they needed to make the game of the year.
I remember so well the excitement when I first saw the RE4 logo on my TV... Can't beat that. I'll wait.
Finch @ Dec 22nd 2006 5:43AM
RE: 4 was awesome. It had great game play, and the graphics helped make the game very immersive. I am sorry but you just do not get the same fear from blasting a pixilated Iron Maiden. Horror/Adventure games need good graphics to get you wrapped up in a game, it helps set the mood and tone of it. I am not saying graphics are everything, I just feel it is important to help set up a great atmosphere for the game. Game play is still of great concern to me.
FSK405K @ Dec 22nd 2006 6:01AM
How many TV's run at 60fps, really?
Skyler Jermyn @ Dec 22nd 2006 6:26AM
It's funny what fozome said about RE:0 for gamecube.
Never played it, but looked up screenshots after he mentioned it. Looked pretty good to me. So I looked up a review. First one I came across was gamespot that gave it...ehh...an ok score: 8.0. And obviously, it's not considered a classic. How often do we really talk about that game? But why is that? Probably not because it had bad graphics because what you get the impression of in the review is that the graphics were freaking awesome (at the time) but the problem was.... gameplay was stale:
"All the things that have made Resident Evil a nuisance to some (like ink ribbons used for saving your progress, awkward controls, and limited inventories) didn't go away with the introduction of Resident Evil 0, so that particular crowd won't wish to hop aboard the bandwagon with this installment. But those who have stuck with the Resident Evil series despite its dogged insistence on not changing its ways will find that Resident Evil 0 still has a lot to offer in the form of some terrific graphics."
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about good graphics. But I think it's the other way around from what fozome said. If RE:4 had those same sick graphics but the same gameplay as all past RE games, then the series might well have been over at that point.
J @ Dec 22nd 2006 6:27AM
It would be nice if you guys would do some actual journalism and call up Famitsu Xbox 360 and find out whether this was mistranslated or not. Just sayin'. :)
Tom @ Dec 22nd 2006 6:39AM
Never mind the graphics, 3d graphics age terribly no matter what. Unless they are incredibly stylized, i.e. Veitiful Joe, 3d games look pretty bad 4 or 5 years down the line. The "realism" angle is great, but it is only fleeting fun. Don't believe me? Look at any PS2 or Xbox launch title now. They were so impressive back then, now they are hideous. Blame it on ever-increasing polygon counts, texture sharpness, and various lighting effects. Very few 3d games stand the test of time for me, hell PSone games are damn near unplayable because they look so bad in comparison. 2d games on the other hand seem to be easier to go back and play.
Ciaran Gallagher @ Dec 22nd 2006 7:19AM
Wow, I'm happy to wait then!

All of them, really.
Fred T @ Dec 22nd 2006 9:42AM
Why are Nintendo fans bashing this. You guys dont care about graphics, remember? And, its not coming out for Wii anyways, you guys get to look forward to RE: Chronicles.
FSK405K @ Dec 22nd 2006 10:10AM
"All of them, really." No, not standadrd definition TV's. Look up interlacing.

Famitsu Xbox section.... so that what does that consist of? a guy in the broom closet with a mac IIE?

Im kinda out of the loop with the whole series. But I loved Code Veronica for the Dreamcaast.
Is this game coming to 360?
L337 Lemming @ Dec 26th 2006 2:38PM
whatever, we COULD have some kind of Uber 1337 speak off (?) about graphics over gameplay, or we could all STFU, and wait till 2008 to get them both....you choose
:)

" 23. 'All of them, really.' No, not standadrd definition TV's. Look up interlacing. "
...
I'm gonna buy a ps3 or xbox360 and play it on my 20" tube hurray :D
if you must know many LCD HDTVs have response times of < 8 ms. that's 120 Hz for you, 1080i will run 60 REAL frames/second no problem. I have a no name brand 27" HDTV and it has a 15ms refresh rate (which doesn't do 480i so deinterlacing causes crappy motion)
