I dont have any of the "next gen" or the last gen either (unless you count dreamcast which technically was last gen) but man i would need some pretty serious convincing to make myself pay for a PS3 at this point.

I plan on getting a PS3 as soon as they are readily available. The truth is, the average gamer doesnt read sites like these, they arent exposed to the constant barrage of sony hate. All they know is that there is a shortage and its really hard to find one. There is no must have titles right now other than resistance, but the franchises I know will be there eventually.

One has to keep in mind, even if they manage to convert 1 out of ever 10 PS2 owners into a PS3 owners, they easily sell 10 million PS3's. Most of the people who set out to buy the PS3 (to own, not ot sell) arent exactly interested in the wii in the first place.

Here in Edmonton, I was at Best Buy about an hour ago and while standing in the checkout line the Inventory Manager yelled "anyone standing in line who wants a PS3, we have them in stock right now". One guy got one, most of the rest of the folks kinda looked at each other and blinked (granted it was mostly folks who didn't look particulary like gamers to me). I felt the urge of course, but resisted. I almost felt like I should buy one simply because of the feeling of them being so rare.

When I said that to the clerk, he said "they actually aren't selling very fast today".

I think Nintendo Wii definitely emerged as THE hot console for this Christmas season.

@18

Seriously, how has Sony messed up "badly"??

Every launch going back to PS2 has seen shortages..so you can't use the shortage as a flaw. Some people in the industry beleive that "shortages" are manufactured to produce hype.

Every system that ships usually has one good game. The rest are usually crap. I can't even remember what the MUST HAVE title was last year for the 360.

Putting Bluray into PS3 made things difficult for Sony, no doubt...but it was a bold move to make and they made it. Will the success of the PS3 be decided on the medium, No. Sony has just decided that this is the format they want to ship games on. No big whoop.

NEXT GEN has always been about moving the platform ahead. I will agree that it was a bold move for Nintendo to ditch graphics for input, but wouldn't it have been real NEXT GEN to pump the graphics up some? I mean really guys...480P is the best your going to get...it's that a little SAD??

PC Gamers would laugh in your face if NVIDIA released a new graphics card that with 4 year old technology and gave you a new input method. NVIDIA would be closed in about year after that.

NEXT GEN GAMES has always been about GRAPHICS. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. You cannot deny this. And the fact that Nintendo ignored this is just not NEXT GEN.

If you mean what you say, the transition from 2D platformers to 3D gaming was meaningless. We'd still be playing 2D platformers according to you.

I actually owe eBay more money than those fuckers deserve since I relisted the friggin' thing 4 times.
I did buy a Wii, though. It's great. I'm a cheapskate when it comes to expensive purchases (although it never stops me from spending money, it seems), but I have VERY little regrets on buying a Wii..although the upcoming game drought worries me. Sonic had better be damn good.

And the Sony hate continues unabated at Nintenstiq.

Do you guys have PS3 burning parties whilst jerking your Wiimotes? Do you torch Kaz in effigy?

Seriously - the fanning of the Nintendo fanboy hysteria is absolutely hilarious. Stories of PS3's lying around unwanted (not in my area, sorry), Ninty fan bloggers like James here creating news from nada pieces like this and spinning it (hard) to make it as negative for the PS3 as possible... Yeah, it's a class war, alright. It's just that like the hardcore left wing liberals (I'm a middle-road democrat), they want you to think that since they're "right" it excuses resorting to the same aggro and fallacious tactics of the 'other side' In this case, it's twisting news and posting yellow journalism to make the Wii and Nintendo look as good as possible.

I still have my Wii (it's going to one of my nieces tho), I sold my PS3 a week ago. The only system right now that's really worth buying games-wise is the 360, anyway. But hey, I have as much fun with friends playing SPACE WARS on my old Vectrex.

Even Joystiq's much-pandered-to N-fanbots know deep down that Sony will come out on top eventually, regardless of the blatant anti-PS3/PSP crusade Joystiq has been on this year. That's why every bashing blog here, every stupidly irrelevant or distorted pseudonewsbyte, gets wild cheers of support from the Sony hating lynch mob.

You have to hand it to Nintendo - they have a truly devoted core fan(atic)base. It even extends to 'news'bloggers who purport to lack bias.

@6: Theres 80.. count again.

I don't see why everyone is bashing on Nintendo for not following the trend of "top of the line" graphics.

I personally don't give a shit about graphics. If the game is FUN I will play it. If the graphics are great? Thats a bonus. I don't WANT 90 million teraflops per second. I want a game that I will ENJOY. I don't want processor speeds of An Xbox 360 and PS2 put together. I want a game that I will ENJOY.

People have obviously become numb to what a game is. It is something to have FUN. You do not NEED top of the line graphics to be fun. Perhaps Microsoft and Sony can't make fun games...? As much as that is probably not true.. why is everyone focusing on GRAPHICS? Focus more on the GAME PLAY AND MAKING GAMES FUN.

(I apologize if this post doesn't make an sense ;D)

I know that is regular price.

1. I was speaking specifically of what the norm is for the website. They generally don't sell items on woot for regular price.

2. Sadly, 499.99 is not regular price on the internets lately. Most online retailers are still selling PS3's for above MSRP. Ebayer's are setting their reserves above MSRP. Online, $499.99 is not regular price. Again, sadly.

Here's the reality: "next gen" will be gone in a few years. Nintendo already started the "new gen" and everyone will be following Nintendo. Next XBox will have some sort of motion control scheme, guaranteed. PS3 already tried and failed in ripping off Nintendo, again.

21..."Why has Sony messed up so badly?"

It's very simple, and ironic all at the same time. Look at the things Sony has said and done as of late, the blatant and pointed arroagance they display. Lest we forget, Nintendo once played this same role, sitting as king of the mountain trying to force their own divine wisdom and superiority down everyone's throat....and it was for this reason through a series of shortsighted blunders thinking they could do whatever the hell they wanted and still sell everything under the sun to the mindless zombies below them that they fell from the grace they once held. Now in a twist of ironic fate, they're finding themselves caught in the midst of a huge dose of role reversal. This has nothing to do simply with anti-fanboys merely piling on; there are many gamers like myself who own and have enjoyed both the PS1 and PS2 who are shunning them now, just like people shunned Nintendo when better options came along. This isn't to say they're dead forever and this is the end for them or anything melodramatic, but they've seriously stumbled from the peak and wounded themselves from the start this round and there's no debating that.

@38, AssemblyLineHuman, Thank you for the help. I always forget to make my Joystiq posts idiot-proof.

@36, Greg. What exactly was your intended point on correcting me? Did you ignore the commonly known knowledge that PS3 has been selling for above MSRP online. Perhaps in this instance, regular price does not equal MSRP? Maybe the demand is so high, that the regular price it is selling for is higher than MSRP. I realize that many people are not used to thinking first before speaking, but please try. And please don't actually answer my questions. They were all meant for you to think to yourself so you can come to your own intelligent conclusions. I don't want to know they results, and I promise I will not be back on this thread after this so your answer will go unheard by me. Just think to yourself. Maybe unplug the keyboard so you don't type something accidentally. It's better for yourself and all of us if you do that. Make it our gift for the holiday season. Thanks.

FrankTheCrank: "Seriously, how has Sony messed up 'badly'??"

To start off, their use of the BluRay technology was idiotic. In their attempt to take control of the movie format wars along with this "cell processor" stuff that Sony's throwing around, Sony has driven up the price of the PS3 to costs that no one would have imagined a next-gen console would cost last generation. That was their most important mistake. The casual crowd of people who you would expect to go out and buy the PS3 because they had a PS2 are going to see the $500-$600 price tag and leave. Sony is lucky Microsoft put out the Xbox 360 at $400; that really cushioned the impact of Sony's price announcement.

In addition, I believe this convergence device stuff is completely foolish. The problem is that Sony is trying to attract people who want a device that does all of the extra-gaming stuff the PS3 does through a game console. Even if the average consumer is aware of what the Playstation 3 is capable of, it will always be primarily considered a game console. Joe Blo uneducated-about-the-products consumer is not going to walk into Walmart and go to the games section to get his new movie/music/everything else player.

With those two crowds almost completely alienated, Sony leaves itself the hardcore audience. Within this audience, there are Nintendo fanboys, Microsoft fanboys, Sony fanboys, a variety of niche fanboys (like PC and whatnot), and the well-rounded hardcore gamer. For the most part, you can mark all of the fanboys except the Sony ones off the list as they're not going to rationally consider the advantages and disadvantages of the other consoles. Then, there's the hardcore gamer who watches the game news and follows everything closely. But what has Sony done to this very small segment of the market? They've made arrogant comment after arrogant comment, lost exclusives, and generally failed to appeal to this group as well.

Is the Playstation 3 a good piece of hardware at a decent price for what you're getting? That's debatable, but I would say yes, if a multimedia convergence device is what you're looking for.

Are there going to be people who buy the Playstation 3 on brand name alone? No doubt, there are plenty of people with lots of money/credit cards who will splurge on a Playstation 3 without even giving the other consoles a second glance.

But here we have a company that has sold 120 million (I'm assuming the number someone gave above is correct) of their last generation console, and we have people (even some who were Sony fanboys for a very long time) predicting the Playstation 3 to be a complete and utter failure. If Sony didn't make any mistakes, Microsoft and Nintendo are doing an excellent job of making us think they did.

It's funny how shallow some people are. "Last gen graphics.." blah blah blah. So do you own every PS3 game then? They ALL have pretty graphics I must say. Oh wait you probably don't.
/sarcasm

I see PS3s for display (providing when they actually work) and the graphics don't look to different to me. I mean the edges on the characters look more real than last gen, but for the most part, it doesn't look much different. Sure in Wii Sports its all cartoons, but they do look sharp to me. I honestly don't know what some commenters have against the Wii. Is it still the name or something? It is in all honesty very fun, addictive, and something girlfriends, female friends, family, and friends all enjoy playing. This includes gamers and non-gamers. My dad loves playing it, my sisters love it, and I'm lucky if my girlfriend lets me play without her. I've shown Excite Truck (I rented it) and Wii Sports to a variety of Gamers/non-gamers and haven't had any major negative feedback. (The main real negative feedback was my dad commenting on the Wii baseball timing of the pitches, he says in real baseball you have to start swinging once it leaves the pitcher's hand.)

I just don't understand why graphics matter so much.
