Leaving no stone unturned, the fine folks at Ultimate AV have the most thorough review of the PS3 we've ever seen... and they're only looking at the movie playback capabilities. Six pages of gory Blu-ray details results in some very positive impressions:"The PS3 was entirely consistent in providing excellent performance that was just a bit sharper and more detailed than Samsung's BD-P1000. I've now seen what Blu-ray can do, and it can be unequivocally glorious, regardless of which of the three video codecs are used (MPEG-2, MPEG-4/AVC, and VC-1 have all been used on BD) or whether the disc is 25GB or 50GB."
Equaling the stand-alone Blu-ray players' picture and sound quality while beating them out in terms of boot times and disc access speeds, the PS3 looks like it's the next-gen HD movie player to beat. Having both HD-DVD and Blu-ray myself, I find that the ultimate performance between the two formats is very hard to discern. Any real difference is probably going to come down to the quality of the source material and the quality of the disc transfer.
Happy viewing!
