Nintendo has said it wanted to expand its user-base... I just hope they don't make a fake website and get dude to perform a poorly conceived rap song.

I think all this PR right now is a huge waiste on the non-gamer demographic. These people might be influenced and in the passion of the moment want to buy one, but they will be sold out until probably March. By then these people will have already forgot about it and moved on

This seems to me like an example of viral marketing done right, as opposed to Sony's little PSP astroturfing fiasco. The big question is whether the Wii's positive word of mouth can last through the holidays and translate to more sales, but this seems like the best way to do it. People actually trying out the Wii are a heck of a lot more likely to buy one than people who are staring passively at a commercial for it.

I disagree. Look at the success and popularity of the iPod. It hasn't faded. They're still seen everywhere, in the pockets of almost every conceivable demographic. Even though they've been scarce at times, people didn't suddenly lose interest.

Nintendo's aim is to achieve the same thing with the Wii, and they're making the right moves in doing it. Sure, sometimes the public is fickle and forgetful, but if good word-of-mouth spreads effectively enough, brands can become pretty damn resilient.

I knew this would happen all along- because the DS isn't as mobile Nintendo needs to kick start it in certain demographics.

It's the only way to get them to try it- and then perhaps buy it. DS was a success because the day I got it- about 30 other people played on it before the battery died.

Wii doesn't need demo kiosks- just set a spark off in a few houses in each town, people come around to socialise (friends family) they try it and it's self propagating.

It works best with the adverts and as noted above, actually having units on the shelves.
I have had family around- I've not been enthusiastic to show them it but they instantlly spotted it "oh you have a Wii, we saw the adverts" and now they're buying one when they can.

I don't think it will be sold out until March- late January at the latest- and you fail to consider that these normal people are the ones buying the console anyway, hardcore gamers have units by now.

Not every hardcore gamer has one. I don't have one yet. I think there are probaly a lot of people out there who want it but can't get one.

How about letting the Nintendo fanboys such as my self (also own MS and Sony stuff, too, though) do this, and save their money?

This is just brilliant on Nintendo's part. I love the marketing push to get the system into people's home, and that these alpha moms are likely playing up the safe gaming image of Nintendo. It's nice to see a childhood favorite coming back strong and a major player in a 3-system market.

(Disclaimer: I have the Wii and 360.)

40 year old soccer moms are playing the Wii... welcome to the end of gaming as we know it.

Sony should retaliate with a PS2 campaign of its own. The pricepoint, the large log of family-friendly games such as guitar hero and DDR, and the similar graphics should give the Wii the ass-kicking it deserves.

But the Wii and it's controller are different. Despite the nice PS2 library and price, to many, it's just another controller with a boring controller. And as far as graphics go, PS2 was behind the GC, let alone the Wii
