Interesting read - the NeXT system was super-advanced at the time and was definitely ahead of the industry. Plus it was the coolest LOOKING box for the next many years. The loyalty that box has is amazing; my friend, who worked at NeXT developing sound and sound drivers for it, has the logo tattooed on his leg.

And the story of the $1,000,000 logo's designer, Paul Rand, is interesting as well -

I also have to acknowledge the other unfortunate truths here: the NeXT/Apple OS isn't on enough machines to get game devs TRULY excited about trying to sell games for it; and Romero hasn't been hitting as hard as he was back then.

When I worked inside the National Reconaissance Office, all the office computers were NEXT computers. I thought they were some kind of awful XT processor machines. Maybe the employees were all designing games?

Next was also the platform used for development of the World Wide Web in its infancy.

Apple didn't so much buy Next as pay them $400 million to take over the company. Next technology is at the heart of OX X and it's Next guys who hold or held until recently the positions of power in product development. So that worked out OK for both parties.

I just wish BeOS had found some way to keep going. IT was just starting to get serious and would have made an amazing game platform in this era of multi-core processors with its excellent handling of multiprocessing.

Let's not ignore that the PlayStation 2's cosmetic design is almost a direct rip-off of NeXT computers. The form-factor, the horizontal lines, and the way the logo sits matches the NeXTstation. And the way the CD-tray's front is made up of 2 of horizontal lines matches the NeXTcube.
