Silent Hill (the movie) always struck me as the best game-->movie adaptation. Now, I've never seen Resident Evil, but I've seen several Uwe Boll films, and they are all terrible.

I've never played Silent Hill the game, but I know that Silent Hill, the movie was the most terrifying horror film i've seen in recent memory.

So I declare it a success. It succeeded in being a very scary horror movie.

Gans did an incredible job translating the atmosphere and tone of the game to the big screen, but Avary wrote such a hackneyed script that it almost made the film a total turkey. And it had one of the worst beginnings and endings in a movie that I've ever seen. I pray to God that Avary can get his act together and write a decent script this time around or Gans will hire someone who doesn't destroy all his hard work in the first five minutes.

"a mediocre horror flick that proved itself better than a multitude of other game adaptations."

amen to that!

The behind the scenes of silent hill is also a must watch. I was blown away with the process of creating the monsters. They arent CG! Its all costumes! its cool! check it out on the DVD if you get the chance

#2 hit the nail on the head.

Gans did a perfect job of capturing the look & feel of the game (the alley scene is almost shot for shot, and there several other moments of Silent Hill deja vu that really impressed me), that it was almost painfully frustrating to watch as Avery's script veered so far from the game story. I never understand why filmmakers feel the need to make completely unnecessary changes to original source material. They license an IP because it is popular. It's popular because it is the way it is, so by changing it, they negate the entire reason for licensing it in the first place.

Unfortunately it sounds like Avery is already attached to SH2. Hopefully it isn't a (ahem)"direct" story adaptation like SH1. The town really exists independently of any storyline except its origins. This makes SH the perfect series from which to create a film that maintains the style and mood of the game, and yet has no direct ties to any specific Silent Hill game. So, now that it has been introduced in the first film, you could create a brand new story that takes place in Silent Hill (as long as it doesn't contradict any of the existing mythos).

They're making another silent hill but they cant make a Halo? Halo could just be 90 minutes of trailers from halo 3 and it'll make 20mil in theaters the first weekend.

Agreed with #2 and 3, but I really really enjoy Gans' work, so I enjoyed Silent Hill. Was it the best? No, but it's easily the Best Video Game film ever - and all because of the way Gans directs, shoots, and edits. Just look at Brotherhood of the Wolf - the editing alone puts Hollywood to shame, and that film is 4 years old at this point...

Mother of god yes! I am a HUGE Silent Hill fan (it's my favorite game series of all time!) and I have everything from the games to the comics. I saw the first one on opening day and boy was I not let down. Everything in the movie looks like it was taken straight from the game series themselves. All you people who are complaining about the movie seem to miss the point of it being a piece of entertainment. I know it must be hard not to dissect and analyze the shit out of everything, but try not to,it makes life a lot more fun and stress free.

I like how people complain about how a giant monster with a pyramid on it's head and a huge sword enters the room, but overlook the entire fiction of it being a giant monster with a pyramid on it's head and a huge sword.

Silent Hill the movie had some cheesy dialogue, but if you're going into a movie for the substance and not the flash then you're going to have a miserable time regardless of the form of entertainment.

While I agree somewhat with Jbob and Christopher I do have to note that according to Wikipedia and other sources Team Silent approved all changes to the script.

To quote wikipedia:

"Konami Japan and Team Silent, the development team responsible for the Silent Hill game series, became directly involved with the production of the film from the pre-production stage all the way to the post-production stage."

Hm, wait. Does this mean the next movie will be based on Silent Hill 2 (the game)? Or will it be a continuation of Silent Hill (the movie)?

I'd be more interested in a Silent Hill 2 based movie.. since thats the only Silent Hill game I've played =\

My experience with this movie can be summed up by a quote from calculon from futurama.

"That was so terrible, i think it gave me cancer!"

Seriously, i thought it was just awful! Perhaps i need to play the games or something. But the way i saw it, little to no real plot until the flashback, then the whole thing is revealed in five minutes, followed by the completely unneccessary "barbed wire love" scene.

Seriously, with that bit in particular, it's like someone had this idea years ago, thought it was cool, and was finally given the chance to put it into film. It's like something out of a hentai film or something.

I liked the movie a lot, except for the fact that the movie lacked the subtlety of the games. Silent Hill games scare you due, more often, to what you Don't See, things you only hear, or things that movie on the other side of a large room that you can't quite make out because your little flashlight is only so bright. The movie, however, made a big point of showing you everything. The last scene in partiular was too graphic for my tastes...

However, it is still by far the best Game to Movie adaptation I've ever seen. Let's hope he learns the fine art of subtlety for the next one...

FinalDelerium, yeh, if you hadn't played the game I can see how it would just seem like a really crappy movie. It was more a work of fanart than anything else.

Except of course the final scene. I dont think anyone really thought that was a good idea except Gans himself.

i think the movie missed the whole psychological stand point of the games like how the creatures represented the main characters guilt or other past memory, when in the movie, the creatures turned into more of just monsters and just enemies she had to run by or kill. The movie wasn't as silent as silent hill and the radio didn't have a big role. the movie killed the whole movie aspect of the series for me, i still have very high hopes for the future games.
