Tekken 5 on PS3 PlayStation Store in Japan, Hong Kong
Less than a month after a downloadable version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection was announced for PlayStation 3, Namco Bandai's fighter has belly-flopped onto PlayStation Store in Japan (¥2000; $16.85) and Hong Kong ($125HK; $16.07). And it's a beast, weighing in at 830MB; well exceeding the arbitrary limit proposed last month. But Sony's done it, introducing the first full-featured digital distribution title to consoles. Sure, certain Xbox Live games could be just as valuable (if not more so) to the on-demand movement, but let's not downplay Sony's achievement. This is exactly the sort of move that will pressure Microsoft to give up on its enforced 50MB Live Arcade size limit.
The hefty HD version of Tekken 5 includes arcade battle, ghost battle, and offline versus modes, in addition to an artwork and video gallery. Final boss Jinpachi Mishima has also been made playable. No word on the inevitable North American release.

Why would anyone want to play this when Rally X just came out?
Also, I love my mom.

yawn, wake me up when something interesting comes out on PS3

ZOMFG 830mb!!! Thats like...Half the size of an xbox live demo. Get with the program Joystiq.
foodgoes @ Dec 27th 2006 4:39PM
hmm... guess Sony is desperate for content, easily letting go of their 500MB limit.
Knoxximus @ Dec 27th 2006 4:40PM
I gotta give it to NamcoBandai and Sony on this on...with Steam leading the charge, digital distribution is definitely the way of the future. Get rid of the stupid XBLA limit, M$! Maybe include a $50 off a hard drive coupon with every Core system. Get on the ball!
Virtua Fanboy @ Dec 27th 2006 4:55PM
Bear w/me on this but I don't think Microsoft needs to undo the 50 mb rule. What I think they need to do is create a new class system or something. Like if you're gonna make a Pac-man, Street Fighter II type game then it should be 50 mb. There's no excuse for games like those to exceed that limit. Then allow games like Tekken 5 to (or Lumines Live w/all packs included) be 500 to 800 mb.
Michael @ Dec 27th 2006 5:12PM
Downloadable games is a dream come true for console makers because it eliminates the secondary game market. For that same reason - it sux for consumers. With games on physical media - you buy a game and if you like it - keep it for a month or 2 and then sell it and buy another one. And if you don't like the game - you sell it the next day. With downloadable games - every single sale is money in the pocket for Sony (or MS; or Nintendo). Nobody gets to resell anything. And if you don't like the game - too fracking bad.
Of course - the above is assuming ppl don't figure out how to steal downloadable games...

And so begins the end of game stores. Consumers might soon pay less as the middleman is eliminated. Mwah haha!
bandit @ Dec 27th 2006 5:56PM
THINK about this. MS is playing it safe by establishing a physical media NOW. Gamestop and EB make the majority of their profits via resale of used games. Therefore less used games = less profit. Guess which console these stores are more inclined to carry...
Same goes for target and walmart... Sony is shooting themeselves and their distributors way too early before they've had a chance to gain enough market penetration.
v1cious @ Dec 27th 2006 6:20PM
i love how you guys bitch even when there's good news.
dolemite @ Dec 27th 2006 6:23PM
@Bandit:
With the still limited amount of broadband having homes, and the current mindset of game consumers, Walmart and other brick and mortar stores are not worried about Sony doing this. They will still carry Sony products, as they drive people to the store. Yes, they are left out of the profit loop, but in theory the developer and Sony make more money. that should drive devs to make more and better games. They should also be cheaper for the consumer, but the greed factor may keep game prices from dropping as far as they should. Hell, buying a CD on Itunes is still 9.99, when it should be like 5 bucks. Still, this make me wonder about the comments devs have made earlier regarding the Sony online store, and that this is a sign of things to come. Stay tuned.

850 mb? Hmmm, now someone tell this please... why the hell isn't Tekken DR available for the ps2? You know, for like fans? Hello? As far as I can tell, they used the game to try and boost sales of the PSP and appeal to arcade owners as well (arcade owners got mad when tekken 4 was released on ps2 so soon after it's arcade release, making it difficult to make their money). It's been awhile, why not release it for the ps2 now? Sheesh. Although I must admit, the only two games i was interested in for the ps3 were virtua fighter 5 and tekken dr. With vf5 on the xbox 360 (albeit delayed), I don't think i'd by a ps3 if tekken dr came out for the ps2... But it still should! My 2 cents.
Iced_Eagle @ Dec 27th 2006 7:06PM
Cool for Sony :)
Come on Microsoft, up your limit a bit so that we can see more of these sorts of things happen on our beloved Xbox360!
JohnQAnonymous @ Dec 27th 2006 7:29PM
Hm, does this version still have the versions of Tekken 1-3 in it? If so, this is quite a value.
Not Tonight Dad @ Dec 27th 2006 8:10PM
"But Sony's done it, introducing the first full-featured digital distribution title to consoles."
This is true. A big big game from a big big developer for a baby baby price.
I hope to see more of these high quality downloads on the PS store (and even 360 and Wii). I was getting worried that the term "digitally distributed titles" on consoles meant shovelware like Novadrome.
psily @ Dec 27th 2006 8:15PM
nice, competition is a great thing for consumers.
LMAO @ Dec 27th 2006 8:38PM
Digital distribution should allow games to cost less - subtract the cost of DVD/Blu-ray disc, graphical instrution books (they could have a digital version that goes for a small amount for those interested), collector's edition, mark-up by retail, and pre-order crap (although the wait to download the game is probably longer than a trip to the retail shop, including the wait in line).
Well unless a publisher wants a higher profit margin that is.

Hi all:
What I don't understand, is that MS has no problem with 2GB demos, but they impose a 50MB cap on XBLA games. WTF? I have an idea - those people who don't have hard drives (or enough disk space!) WON'T BE ABLE TO BUY THESE GAMES! There will always be the little XBLA games that these "base" console owners can buy and put on their memory cards, but give me a break - how many memory cards will you buy before you give up and buy a hard drive so you can keep more than one game on your console??
I have at least 20 XBLA games on my console - of which I've bought about ten, and have the demos for another 10, and about 3-4 demos at any one time.
Bring out the 160GB harddrive, and let the content flow!

Antonio @ Dec 27th 2006 9:57PM
As much as I love my XBOX 360 I would like to see bigger games available for download on XBL. Come on Microsoft, let Treasure release Radiant Silvergun on XBL while we wait for the new Treasure game!

congrats to sony, coming from a 360 owner. Glad someone has done it.
Skullivan @ Dec 27th 2006 11:05PM
It's already in the works guys. We all know Symphony of the Night is coming to XBLA in the next few months (which in XBLA time probably means like September) and there's no way that's going to be under 50MB.
Microsoft's biggest obstacle is the 13GB of available space on the 360 HDD. They've got to make an affordable 80-100GB+ HDD available and when they charge $100 for a 20GB I don't see that happening anytime soon.
Either that or they have to loosen up and let you hook up a USB 2.0 HDD to dump stuff on there. You can already do it unofficially with the XSATA anyway.

How is this an achievement? Maybe I am not getting what exactly "full-featured digital distribution title to consoles" means. From what I understand this would mean a game that has all the standard game features and isn't a demo. Wouldn't that mean all of the XBLA and Wii VC titles would fit into that category? They are full featured games, some with both SP and MP, both in 3D and 2D. One even uses the Unreal Engine, for heaven's sake. But those don't count as full feature games?
I just don't see what the big deal is. Sure, it's cool that this game is up their, and I am all for the content, but frankly this isn't the big deal everyone is making it.
@6, I think your tier idea is good. Still keep the tiny 50 mb, then make another step with bigger titles.
Richard @ Dec 28th 2006 12:24AM
Still Offline? Sounds like this was hastily pumped out, I would expect it to be pretty buggy.
Someone in japan should hit their stopwatch when they start downloading this, and see exactly how long it takes to get off their servers.. Methinks it would be much faster to just walk to the store..
Leto @ Dec 28th 2006 3:07AM
Andy, those screenshots look hot, can you upload a video plz?
mietha CAG @ Dec 28th 2006 3:26AM
I want it NOW NOW NOW. Dammit, hurry up with the US version. Guessing it's going to be $20, which is still ok, I suppose, but $15 would be so much sweeter.
killr0y @ Dec 28th 2006 4:58AM
I'm not sure what kind of achievement this is.. I mean, I downloaded the Windows Vista DVD ISO from Microsoft, which is 3 times that size. Do I win a prize too?
JBDragon @ Dec 28th 2006 5:05AM
I think MS will Raise the Limit once the 256 Meg Memory Card is Released. After all the Limit of 50 Megs is because of the 64 Meg Memory card size. Leaving a little room for game saves and Live Account info. I could see MS raising it to a 200 Meg Limit.

So if freakin' TEKKEN 5 is only 830Mb, WHAT THE FORK IS BLU-RAY FOR? That being said, anybody want a BetaMax player? They're only going for 99 cents on eBay...
Virtua Fanboy @ Dec 28th 2006 8:30AM
I'm a 360 owner and even I think that this is pretty cool. I mean it's not something I'd have to have but I agree that it's going to force Microsoft to get a little more creative than "New" Rally X or whatever came to arcade today.
flyingwaffle @ Dec 28th 2006 10:11AM
There is really no "technical" 50MB limit on Live...
you can download many demos Live that are over 1GB. The difference between such demos and full games is just that they're free...
Joe @ Dec 28th 2006 10:49AM
I would really like this to come out in North America and when it does it would be sweet if online play was added. Then this game would really Rock.
anonymous coward @ Dec 28th 2006 12:19PM
"hmm... guess Sony is desperate for content, easily letting go of their 500MB limit."
nice how you spin this. they do something good (i.e. ignoring arbitrary limits in order to please a developer and allow more content) and you criticize them. i'm sure if they disallowed it due to size you'd criticize them for not allowing more than 500MB for games.
jeezus. find a real problem.
AG @ Dec 28th 2006 12:41PM
It is refreshing to see "some" Xbox and Wii fanboys applauding Sony for this.
The people who are trying to spin this into a negative for Sony...

rockintom99 @ Dec 28th 2006 12:50PM
Um... Isn't Sony the one who keeps saying "Yay, we have blu-ray, and we can store 25-50 gigs worth of game POWER", and yet, tekken 5 is released under one gig, without any kind of disc? Doesn't that just kindof defeat the purpose of blu-ray?
Mike @ Dec 28th 2006 6:29PM
What the f**k is Zomg????????? And owned??? Who started this stupidity???
iMPULSZE @ Dec 31st 2006 12:52PM
This is real easy to get...
-Create a new user
-Sign up for the Playstation online (create a Master account)
-Choose Hong Kong as your Region
-Put whatever location you want, but make sure to remember it.
-Once all that is done, go to Account Management and add funds
-add $40 HKD (rougly converts automatically to $5.15US)
-add $40 HKD again
-go dl the game and add the remaining $45 HKD (roughly $11)
The money will autoamatically convert the funds without paying any extra fees...
Enjoy.
My $.02:
For me being able to play a game that currently is only available in Japan is huge. Im the type of gamer that will pay extra to have a game imported, and also buy all the subsequent converters to make it playable. For only $20(est) I can get a great game without ever leaving my home, paying extra shipping, or leaving a package to be lost in the mail. The DL roughly takes 1hr, which really isnt that bad fora game at 835mb.
Mr Jao @ Jan 21st 2007 2:57PM
i must admit thats pretty damn cool...not just because of the steps that sony is taking, but because (and i'm sure i'm not alone on this: tekken fans) i was really dissapointed when i played tekken 5 and found out that despite the game being freakin awesome, i couldnt play as jinpachi...i wonder if his moves are going to be similar to kazuya/heihachi...
