That's not a virtual console glitch. It's "Bowser's time trap" or something like that. The glitch is documented in the original instruction manual. Every now and then, the player can get stuck on a springboard.

This does prove one thing, however. These are definitely emulated roms(!!) and not altered/recompiled code. Or at least that's what this incident would lead me to believe...

This isn't a glitch with the VC, it's something in the SMB code. There should be a springboard where the player got stuck. For some reason, the springboards sometimes don't load, and you'll get stuck if you land where it should be.

According to some SMB glitch site, this was a known bug and it's the reason that there's usually hidden blocks you can jump on to avoid using the springboards.

It is pretty well known that the VC is just a bunch of emulators. Cheapest and easiest way to do it.

Heh, I myself just visited the minus world. I was delighted. I have been wanting to do that for years, but only had the fixed up All-Stars version.

Related:

Dunno if it was documented in the original Toejam & Earl, and I don't have a camera handy to display, but if you use spring shoes to jump into an elevator when you appear at the next level the sprite will still be in mid-jump and the controls won't respond. Its actually kinda funny.

fix your diggclick link.... you have to change it to a direct link to the digg page for this article. That'll get rid of your error message.
