Goldeneye: Source beta released
The 22-man team working to modernize Goldeneye 64 with the Source Engine have given everyone the perfect Christmas gift: a public beta showing off the fruits of their labor. (It's just a step above last year's present, the alpha version.)The mod, which requires a Source-based game to work, has already garnered much attention over the years for the level of detail in its stage design and weaponry. All information, including known bugs, can be found on the developer Wiki. Here are some suggestions, via the mod's main website, on how to stabilize the game:
- Check for and download latest video card drivers
- A server with 10 people seems to work better
- Have the Base SDK installed
- Download the mod again on another mirror and reinstall the mod.
- Turn HDR off
- Turn shadow detail on low
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

The game is great, but the thing that really irks me is the horrible bullet detection. It takes me on average of 2 clips to kill an enemy no matter what gun. Also the game seems to have frame lag in wide open areas, it wasn't just me :/. Other then that it was somewhat enjoyable.

Good thing #2 was all over that first post thing.

haha, +1 Zing! Tucker.

For those of you that have played the N64 version, you know how fun this game was and still is today IMO. One of the first games i got for the system and had to buy 3 more controllers for my friends. It's a fkin blast to play 4 player. The prox mines were funny(good thing you could shoot em), but put them in the right spot and BOOM! Good times....
When i saw the trailer, i forgot where, i was gettin giddy. I hope they dont screw it up tho. I might need a new comp too to handle the source. P4 1.8,512mb,64mb vid card (OUCH).
Chris @ Dec 28th 2006 1:05PM
DO you need HL2 to run this? Because i lost my HL2 Game after i reformatted my computer and i need to rebuy it.
Chris @ Dec 28th 2006 1:11PM
Our of curiosity, isn't this blatantly against someone's copyright?
Iced_Eagle @ Dec 28th 2006 1:20PM
*Sigh* It sort of annoys me how you guys advertise mods which are remakes but then not advertise original IP mods.
I mean everyone complains about why we are always seeing sequels after sequels and rehashes and remakes and it's a simple answer... They always get the most press and the new guys get left alone since they are unproven.
I'm not trying to downplay the Goldeneye: Source guys, but I just think it would be nice if you guys (Joystiq) could sort of give equal press for all mods and not just the remakes of games we played years ago.
BlessedBullet @ Dec 28th 2006 1:23PM
For originality, this is maybe one step above a World War II shooter.
nick @ Dec 28th 2006 1:24PM
Copyright? I would think so. There's Nintendo, Rare (Microsoft), MGM (Sony), and Eon Productions.
FSK405K @ Dec 28th 2006 1:46PM
For good original mod, check out Rose of Eternity Chapters 1 and 2 for NWN. My housemate has been playing them like crack the last month. He said the developer (some guy) did things with the NWN engine that is not only completely unrelated to DnD (the developer has never played DnD) but which Bioware never achieved with the game.
Mr. Khan @ Dec 28th 2006 1:47PM
@ #9, there is also Activision (or Treyarch, not sure)
who owns all the rights to release Bond 007 Titles
So yes, to re-release Goldeneye 007 would require the cooperation of Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Rare themselves, and Activision
In other words, NO
otakucode @ Dec 28th 2006 2:14PM
Just hope these guys don't act all surprised when they get their cease and desist letters.
andrew @ Dec 28th 2006 2:33PM
wouldn't the copyright not even matter since the developers of it aren't making any money off of it...or are they?
nick @ Dec 28th 2006 2:42PM
I don't believe Activision was a party to the release of Goldeneye 007. If they came along and later acquired a license to release games, much like EA, that doesn't give them a right to sue for a game in which they had no involvement--however--they can sue for infringing on their right to exlusively publish new titles under the license.
Whoever is making this mod is playing with fire. You can just arbitrarily take someone else's property and make a new version of it. If that were the case, they anyone could make a Star Wars game or anyone could make a Halo game, or hey I liked the original Pokeman, I'm going to update it to today's standards.
It's an invitation to being sued.
nick @ Dec 28th 2006 2:49PM
"wouldn't the copyright not even matter since the developers of it aren't making any money off of it...or are they?"
It shouldn't matter if money is being made, it's someone else's property, which they can sell. That you're offering it for free, diminishes their right for future sales or licensing.
It would be like me creating an NFL game with actual players and giving it away for free. EA would not be happy, nor would the NFL.
If you were to sell it, there would most definately be a suit with damages involved, which if you're not licensed, you're looking at possibly paying more than you made.

Well if there's a problem with a talented team like this putting in hard work and making a great mod then maybe whoever now owns the IP should get off their fat asses and remake this great game themselves, something in line with all this new wonderful technology that is now out.
C'mon, who else would be keen for a Goldeneye remake?
FSK405K @ Dec 28th 2006 5:47PM
Fair Use would be great if it applied here, but historically hasn't. Look up what happened to any fan-project that attempted to use the Aliens franchise.
flapjackboy @ Dec 28th 2006 6:11PM
It'll only be a problem if Microsoft decide to produce a Goldeneye remake, I mean look what happened to Halogen.
sploy @ Dec 28th 2006 6:17PM
who cares... its crap.
I played it today, and you don't get an aiming reticle unless you hold shift down, the graphics are N64 graphics.
To the guy who said he might need a new system, NOT FOR THIS UGLY GAME YOU WONT.
Whats the point in remaking it if you are going to leave it how it was and not improve it. They could have at least made the textures a bit more detailed ?!?!
steesefactor @ Dec 28th 2006 6:19PM
I tried the beta last night, and I was impressed by how much work the mod team had put into it. Its just dissapointing that they didn't go for an original game. They're a cease and desist notice away from oblivion. It would have been much better if they had identified what made the original Goldeneye game a classic, and took those elements to make a mod that was similar in play, but not a copy. Of course, if they did that, they probably wouldn't get all the coverage the mod has gotten.
joseph @ Dec 28th 2006 7:54PM
Good thing #3 is so in love with #2.
Easy_G @ Dec 28th 2006 8:52PM
Chris:
If you already bought HL2 then a reformat doesn't matter. You just log on to steam and redownload the games you've already purchased. That is of course assuming you used a legit copy with steam.
Sploy:
Go back and play Goldeneye on the N64 right now. This mod is a HUGE graphical improvement over the old game. The reason for the mod was to remake the old game so it looked more attractive, but to keep the old gameplay that made it a classic, which is the reason why there is no aiming reticule unless you hold shift. Assuming you played the N64 version, you'd remember that you only had that red aiming reticule when holding down R to zoom in. Congrats on being a moron who has no idea what you're talking about.
jay @ Dec 28th 2006 10:09PM
It's not that bad, certainly not bad enough to kill yourself over it.
EmreBFG @ Dec 28th 2006 11:35PM
I'm glad I've been made aware of this project. I played Goldeneye just last night and can't wait to download this mod and have a go.
That said, there are definite legal issues with this mod and any other mod that draws content from protected entities. I'm actually quite surprised that a C&D hasn't been issued to this team. Weren't there Goldeneye levels released recently for Perfect Dark Zero? I'm sure most gamers would certainly prefer playing HL2 levels than PDZ, and this would dig into the appeal of PDZ -- financial liability there. This might be a contrived scenario, but it's possible.
As much as I appreciate original games, there is a certain value to gamers in nostalgia such that this mod delivers. Best of luck to this team.
