Today's hottest game video: Virtua Tennis trailer
Today's most-watched GameTrailers video is a Virtua Tennis 3 trailer. This 2007 game hopes to live up to its legendary lineage, recreating the gameplay that made Virtua Tennis an all-time favorite. We're looking forward to this title on the PSP and HD consoles, but we also hope that Sega can put some of the Virtua magic into a Wii tennis game. Until then, we'll fire off passing shots and smashes on the PS3 and Xbox 360.See the trailer after the break.

Looks nice, but I don't think I can play any other sports game besides Wii sports (I don't I've ever really played any other sports game before Wii sports, unless Racing games, or rhythm games count as sports games.)
joey @ Dec 28th 2006 12:27AM
yeah... who cares about virtua tennis unless it's on the wii... like... after playing wii tennis for 1 minute any normal person would say "what's the point of playing tennis any other way?".
Ian @ Dec 28th 2006 12:30AM
All this and Wii Sports' Tennis is still more fun :D
nick @ Dec 28th 2006 12:31AM
This is a perfect example of why graphics are not as important on the Wii. What makes more realistic tennis? Graphics? or the actual feel of swinging a racket and hitting the ball?
This virtua tennis looks way better than wii tennis, we can all agree on that. But i'd lay any amount of cash on a bet that if you let 10 people play virtua tennis on a non wii platform in HD 1080p and then let them play Wii Sports Tennis at 480p, they'd all want another game of wii tennis at the end of the comparison.
Graphics do not a tennis game make.
ZaBlanc @ Dec 28th 2006 9:16AM
Hate to say it thrice, but, yeah I'll still take Wii Sports with the silly little Miis. It just feels great to play. :-)
Graphics look nice, but VT3 still has a bad case of the "dead eyes".

I do like oldschool nintendo tennis mechanics though, like on the gba and the gamecube, they are pretty fun (except for the power shots which were a bit annoying, but the items were pretty damn fun if you were in the mood).

My prediction is that this will be a launch title for the Wii Advanced in 2009. Sega probably won't spend money to downsize their graphics...
Oh? That's right, there's a fully backwards compatible Wii Advanced in the fall of 2009, too. C'mon, isn't that common knowledge by now?

Former Dreamcast owner, current 360 owner, non-Wii owner (but I can dream!). This looks really great! Of course, as I said, I go back with this series from the beginning, so I may be biased... But this one, even just from this trailer, looks like Sega has recaptured some of the magic that made this game so much freakin fun! Too bad they didn't show the awesome minigames though.
If I may though...I love the Wii, I want one, I've had a blast with what little I've played. That said, anyone who thinks Wii tennis is as much fun as Virtua Tennis has just not played enough Virtua Tennis.
Tamago @ Dec 28th 2006 1:39AM
Hey fanboys, the wii's fun.......but not THAT fun. Certainly not enough to stop me from playing some good ol virtua tennis.
Splash @ Dec 28th 2006 1:44AM
People mention Wii Sports Tennis, but don't you have no control over you player's movement in that game? That's a bit like playing a football game where you can't control the play calling, or something to that effect.
Court position is one of the key strategic elements in tennis, and so I don't really think a comparison to Wii Sports Tennis makes any sense.
That said, make a Wii version of Virtua Tennis 3 where you can move the player yourself in addition to control the swings and I would never touch another tennis game again!
bbelt @ Dec 28th 2006 2:06AM
why are you looking forward to playing this on the PSP?
E8 Foe @ Dec 28th 2006 1:51AM
Whew, I thought I was going to be the only one in here with my (slightly) anti-Wii Tennis opinion. Really, it's more pro-Virtua Tennis.
Damn, Sega used to be awesome. Sigh.
Erec @ Dec 28th 2006 2:02AM
As someone who enjoys actual tennis, I'd play Virtua Tennis or even Top Spin before I'd play Wii Sports tennis.
Sure, Wii Sports tennis is a decent replication of the game, assuming you believe the game to consist entirely of swinging your racket and hoping the ball does what you're thinking. Seriously, you can't move your guy, shot selection is ridiculously limited, they've pretty much taken any and all strategy and skill out of the game. I think the control scheme has potential, but Wii Sports tennis is a joke of a serious tennis game (and my serious tennis game, I'm talking about one made for the crowd that would actually buy a tennis game, not one made for the crowd that just wants to goof around with a tennis-like game and their buddies for a few minutes).
Granted, you can't swing your arm around with any of the prettier tennis games, but assuming you're not above replicating real world actions with specific button presses, you can actually play a much more realistic, deep game of tennis with almost any other tennis game out there. And that's not even taking into account the fun in playing a career mode.
I don't want anyone to think I'm completely busting on Wii Sports tennis. It's fine for what it does, provide a brief tennis-like diversion to those that aren't too concerned with the quality of the tennis. But the idea that it is best tennis game out there, the only one people should look at if they want a tennis fix, that idea is pretty far-fetched.
Falsoman @ Dec 28th 2006 2:15AM
well... wii tennis does read at least 6 kinds of swing modes (including curve balls) that i can think of and that is not counting speed... and it only uses the wiimote, so it is not THAT dificult to implement better control mechanics on a more serious game, like swinging styles with the remote, and moving with the nunchuck... and it is still not using any buttons... so there is always a lot of possible ways of doing a "realistic" tennis game on the wii.
Embassy @ Dec 28th 2006 2:26AM
people need to realize that wii-sports may be great for the casual gamer and fun at drunken frat parties...but for people who want more in-depth sport games like virtua tennis , nba 2k , mlb etc etc will always have more to offer.
JAC @ Dec 28th 2006 2:33AM
I have fond memories of Virtua Tennis for de Dreamcast, believe it or not it was the game that made me buy the system.
Falsoman @ Dec 28th 2006 2:33AM
Yup. I don't really think wii sports and virtual tennis can be considered at the same category... i think wii sports it is on a kind of it's own... it's far less than a full featured sport title, but it is way more than a mini game... is something at the middle. It does have a lot of depht but never as much as a dedicated hardcore sport game. Kind of pick up and play and master after a lot of practice.
Watership @ Dec 28th 2006 2:53AM
Hey kids, this is a game, not a mini game. This isn't something your grandfather can play for 30 mins and say "Wow Jimmy, that was swell." You need skill, and it has 'modes'.
Look! You can move your player around the court. Eureka!
Tommy Mang @ Dec 28th 2006 8:32AM
Are the Williams sisters still playing tennis?!
I haven't seen them this year...

:Nuff said.

Yeah I have played Wii sports and also own a DC with the original, all I have to say is that
yes, wii tennis is fun, but this does not mean that VTennis is not fun. In fact, throughout college VT was the game that got my non gamer friends to play, my roommates, girlfriend, etc..
VT is an AMAZING tennis experience. So is Wii tennis, but right now it's not technical enough to feel like a very strategic game. For instance, that your characters always auto run to the ball, even if it's in one's best interest to play center. I KNOW WHY they did this, and it's a FREE GAME. In the future, if they make a VT for Wii, it will be the ultimate achievement, combining the fun/precious of wii tennis and the strategy and adrenaline of virtua tennis.
If you think VTennis is sub par, you have probably not played real tennis, or um, a crappy game like any mario tennis.

Hopefully Andy Roddick can finally beat Roger Federer in this game, HA!

please bring virtua tennis to the wii!
i would love a real tennis game on this thing. PLEASE GOD LET THEM SEE THE LIGHT.
piracy @ Dec 28th 2006 11:42AM
You know even to this day they haven't made a realistic tennis game. I have never played a game where you can run around the ball and hit a forehand (inside out) or run back and get a lob (Most players rather not hit the ball between their legs, I mean get ahead of the ball and hit a forehand or backhand). This being said, I just hope they have Roger Federer in this game. That would be the biggest let down. He is the best player still active. Screw Andy...
Pal @ Dec 28th 2006 12:26PM
I still wish that the Wii had the graphics to go along with the controller. This is depressing! Oh Nintendo, WHY!?
j4m3s @ Dec 29th 2006 10:20PM
why did it say power smash 3 at the end...
I'd rather play a tennis game based on Prince of Tennis
