Best Buy selling hoarded PS3s tomorrow morning

If you happened to spot a PlayStation 3 (or seven PlayStation 3s) at your local Big Box store this past week but had your hand-slapped when you tried to buy one, then pay special attention to tomorrow's Best Buy circular. Looks like our internal (and poorly spelt) memo was dead on; each store has a minimum of 25 60GB PS3 units, with some stores having as many as 60! In order to keep the violence to a minimum, stores are going to be handing out tickets "one hour prior to store opening on Sunday, December 31." According to their holiday store hours, Best Buys will be open tomorrow morning at 10am, meaning interested gamers (or tardy eBay profiteers) will need to be there by 9am to collect their ticket ... though we'd suggest getting there a couple hours early.

The best buy I work at has had them for a long time, on hand. I checked out two people with them yesterday.
Mark @ Dec 30th 2006 7:46PM
Early? Why? I can walk into Wal*Mart or Target and buy a PS3. My local stores have tons, and I live in Miami, not some small town. If it was a Wii, I'd get there early. For the PS3? You'll probably be able to walk into the store at 10AM and get a ticket.
Patrick @ Dec 30th 2006 7:45PM
There were three 60 gb ps3's simply sitting on the shelf of my local Target tonight. Gainesville, Va for anyone interested.
mike @ Dec 30th 2006 7:44PM
Does anyone know where the rest of this best buy ad is? I want to see if theres any good deals on xbox 360 games
James Smith @ Dec 30th 2006 7:54PM
Wonder if I can go there and auction off a ticket just to get a PS3.
Robert @ Dec 30th 2006 7:58PM
Our Walmart and Hastings has had PS3's (20 and 60G) sitting on the shelves for a week - nobody'll touch 'em.
bearattack79 @ Dec 30th 2006 8:00PM
Thunder Bay Ontario - they are collecting dust @ HMV, Wallmart, Futureshop, EB to name a few.
tituspullo @ Dec 30th 2006 8:02PM
gamestop in houston on spring cypress has had the same ones for almost a week now 3 6ogb's. but no wii's
TexRob @ Dec 30th 2006 8:04PM
lol, one hour before opening? Have fun with wasting your time. Joystiq, et al, go to itrackr.com and create a free account, put in your zip, and see what's available in your area. In Austin, they are tracking 19 stores (doesn't do wal mart, best buy, and a handful of other chains that sell PS3/Wii). Of the 19 they track 11 of the 19 have 60gb PS3s in stock, and have for over THREE days.
nick @ Dec 30th 2006 8:05PM
Special treatment for an item that is not in heavy demand. Nice. I'll be sure to line up and not buy one tomorrow.
FSK405K @ Dec 30th 2006 8:09PM
Who wants a PS3 nowadays? They were so 11/17.
rom @ Dec 30th 2006 8:11PM
For a while, I thought everybody that said they "found PS3 consoles easy" were just talking BS...Until I actually went and checked for myself. I'm just amazed beyond belief. I couldn't get my 360 till march and even that was on a wait list. Yet I can buy a PS3 right now if I wanted to. Not that I would.
Tim @ Dec 30th 2006 8:15PM
Or you could have bought one at any of the retailers that have had them in stock all week... Is anyone really going to come out and wait for hourse to buy a system that you can probably get just walking into a Target or gaming store any time you want?
B1KEAGE @ Dec 30th 2006 8:14PM
there's short supply but even less interest
glitched @ Dec 30th 2006 8:23PM
how many stores does best buy have in the countrey anyway?
Adam @ Dec 30th 2006 8:23PM
I went into two stores today (Toy's R Us and Target) and they both had 60gb PS3 systems. Heck, Toy's R Us had around 20 tickets. I was tempted to buy one...but then I reminded myself that there are no games out for that system really worth owning or even close to coming out anytime soon that make that $600 purchase justifiable--Blue Ray player be damned.
miguel @ Dec 30th 2006 8:38PM
yeah you'd think that they'd at least do this befoe xmas.. I mean, dec. 31st?
X @ Dec 30th 2006 8:26PM
There are PS3's at my local target. I am suprised as well. Honestly they are to expensive. I think that is turning people off.
Wii Man @ Dec 30th 2006 8:45PM
2 PS3 at the local target here (one 20GB & one 60GB). The Wii is the hard one to get. None of the big-box sales people have ideas when the next "shipment" is coming.
glitched @ Dec 30th 2006 8:31PM
nevermind, wikipedia says theres almost 800 stores between the US and Canada. thats 20,000 consoles in one day.
HangMan @ Dec 30th 2006 8:54PM
Ok. Anyone know if there will be any Wii consoles at the best buy? The PS3 just doesn't have the games right now for me to pay $599.99! I want a Wii! Anyone have any info?!
Leshrac @ Dec 30th 2006 9:02PM
I thought the plummeting Ebay prices and reports of people seeing them all over the place had already shown that demand wasn't that great for them... Hell, I'm probably returning the one I got from Costco... I bought it because it seemed like the thing to do when they went on sale... I've considered keeping it, but honestly can't think of a good reason why I should keep it around for now, since I don't really want to play any of the games for it yet. May as well just return and buy it later when it will have likely dropped in price.
mike @ Dec 31st 2006 10:08AM
Costco in Austin, TX had 6 of them as of yesterday and the manager said they'd been there for a few days. Nice enough deal I suppose; 60gb, extra controller and some random game for $699.
The rush of guilt-stricken parents deperate to buy them for their snot-nosed kids is past. All these things are going to do is gather dust.
Shagi @ Dec 30th 2006 9:03PM
The wii has just as many games worth playing, according to critics that = 1.
Zatos @ Dec 30th 2006 9:04PM
Anybody going to post how this sale goes down? I mean, if any people actually show up early to get one? Or if they actually sell a lot?
McTendo @ Dec 30th 2006 9:12PM
I would buy one if I didn't own a laptop.
I mean, a $599 computer? That's actually pretty sweet. I would throw linux on there and just use it for MSN and Firefox.
You hear me, Sony fanboys? I would use your precious system as a cheap computer for YTMND and Kotaku.
The hell would I buy any games for it when Diablo 2 runs fine with wine.
mrbaldyhead @ Dec 30th 2006 9:23PM
rofl how come everyone who has said theyve seen ps3s around has a generic name like tim, mark, and patrick. does anyone else smell bots/payed commentors.
Aaron @ Dec 30th 2006 9:23PM
Target in Melbourne Florida had three PS3's last night and the Wal-Mart in Palm Bay had 2 on December 23rd. They are not that hard to find now that the prices on Ebay tanked.
Dan @ Dec 30th 2006 9:25PM
I went to Best Buy today to blow a gift certificate on some movies and what did my eyes behold but a single 60GB PS3 just sitting there, next to the PS3 games, exactly where it was supposed to be. The store was packed. I can't figure it out... it's like no one there could see it but me.
Of course I bought it.
McTendo @ Dec 30th 2006 9:26PM
Not everyone can have a sexified name like yours, mr *blushes* bladyhead. teeheeheehee
Paul @ Dec 30th 2006 9:30PM
I saw 4 PS3s sitting on the shelves at the Summerville, SC Target last night. Anyone in the Charleston area might want to check there first before standing in line at BB.
Leshrac @ Dec 30th 2006 9:31PM
The Wii has one amazing game (Zelda) and several good (mostly exclusive) ones (Rayman, Elebits, Monkey Ball, Madden Wii, Excite Truck. I haven't played much PS3 yet, but my understanding is that it has one good game (Resistance) and maybe a couple (mostly non-exclusive) decent ones. Unless you need a Blu-Ray player, it seems like, at least for the time being, the choice would be obvious.
Rich Autry @ Dec 30th 2006 9:33PM
I’m from Indianapolis, Indiana and yesterday I was at my local target and there was 3 60 gig ps3s on the shelf. The units probably are not there any more but never the less I saw them and I wish I wasn’t such a poor guy. I don’t think they are selling less I think its after Christmas and no one has 600 to drop right now. Hey what do I know?
GD86 @ Dec 30th 2006 9:41PM
Add me to the list of people who have seen them. In my search for a wii, or atleast a copy of Disgeia 2 or Season 1 of BSG I saw 1 in an FYE, 2 in a Wal mart, and the EB games I stopped by had the "We have PS3" sign up.
KC @ Dec 30th 2006 9:49PM
I'm in Los Angeles, and in the Marina Del Ray and Culver City areas, I've seen at my local Gamestop/EBs on quite a few occasions. They sell em. But not as quickly as the Wiis fly out the door.
The demand for the ps3 is low at the moment. Makes sense though, there isnt a single game for it worthy of buying the entire console over it.
ShortFinal @ Dec 30th 2006 9:57PM
Spelt, eh?
phantom42 @ Dec 30th 2006 9:58PM
the target by me (orlando, fl) had 3 60gb ps3's just sitting in the case today. no one seemed to care.
stopped by the gamestop in the same shopping plaza and they too had a handful, along with a crowded store that couldnt seem to care less either.
Ferb @ Dec 30th 2006 9:59PM
I've been looking for Wii for the last 3 days. No one hear in Tuscaloosa, AL has any, but every store I've been to (Target, Wal-mart, EB Games, etc.) has AT LEAST 3-4 PS3s on the shelves collecting dust.
MaX PL @ Dec 30th 2006 10:11PM
heres the deal:
the ps3 is expensive. the wii is cheap and the only option for those who cant afford the xbox or playstation.
wii hype will be nonexistant next year when high profile xbox and playstation games are out and prices drop for both consoles.
Mak @ Jan 1st 2007 9:25PM
The Target in Commack, NY had a handfull of 60gb PS3 in stock today. They had a demonstration system going as well. A kid was playing some sort of off road racing game, and the graphics looked terrific, but not interesting enough to make me want to play it. Anyway, I think that the PS3 shortage can be officially declared over.

And you think there will be a price drop because why?
This isn't Highlander, MaX PL, you loser. The mentaility of "there can only be one" makes fanboys like you look that much more pathetic to the general gaming community.
Who the hell cares if the hype goes away. Bring on the games; for all THREE systems.
nofanboy @ Dec 30th 2006 10:23PM
I was at BB today, and they had a few PS3s on a display. I thought they were just display boxes, but they turned out to be the real deal.
No, I didn't buy one. I would've considered it, except that $600 is way too much.
bearattack79 @ Dec 30th 2006 10:28PM
Hey Mr Baldyhead!
Area code (807) call them up if you want. You should get out more.
maktattack @ Dec 30th 2006 10:31PM
Spelt is also a grain: http://www.spelt.com/
On craigslist, I see all sorts of listings from folks wanting to trade their PS3s for Wiis + games.
carlos @ Dec 30th 2006 10:55PM
i think i am the only retard that is trying to get a ps3.
on the launhc i was at walmat had ticket number 23 they had 22 consoles, stupid me stayed till midnight to see if i could score one. i couldn't so then i went to milenia mall in orlando. the first retard there... well, i managedd to stay in the line, but then a few retards, messed up with the cops, than the line kinda lost it, i was pissed over the violence, teasers, cop pushing people with the cars!!! so then i gave up, and kept on searching... Then i gues on december 5th walmart had a 2 wii shipment, i stuck at the line for like almost 20 hours, was number one and got one!!! very neat console, though wii sports you can sit down and just move your wrist, and you might play better than if u were standinf up!!! well, i tried to find a ps3 cuz i want the "cheap blu ray " and want to play street fighter games and other stupid fight crap that i like, like king of fighters... bla bla bla! I have a xbox360, i like it alot.... got the HDdvd for it... but i have to HDTV, so need blu ray in one and HDDVD on the other one... so tomorrow ill kinda get up at 8.30 and stop by best buy lits like 2 miles from my house, if the line is "full" by then i will stop at wallgreens get bread and batteries for the ""thirsty"" wii mote! darn my total game play = 8 hours and batteries were GONE, corse they're those cheap ones that cames with it...
so i kinda hope i can get a ps3 tomorow, if i can't i guess i ll have to wach reg dvd's on my tv, until sony decides to charge less for that HUGE BLACK BOX... when i get and if i get i will paint mine white just like that guy did, i paint cars... so airless and bd paint. will add a niiiiiice touch.... maybe use die on the controlers...
bearattack79 @ Dec 30th 2006 11:06PM

Saddest thing I ever say today…
My local EB ganes had a few PS3’s still collecting dust.
Lil kid (11ys maybe) comes in with his dad to buy one.
The kids traded damn near EVERYTHING he owned
X-box, PS2, GameCube and 70 games just for the PS3 and a copy of Motostorm.
After the kid left I went over to the clerk and asked him,
“How are you able to sleep at night?”
He just held his head low.
Anonymouse Rep @ Dec 30th 2006 11:35PM
I said this in another topic.
Everyone check at your local Best Buy at the end of the day tomorrow - or maybe even fairly early on Monday. See how many of the 25 - 60 PS3's they STILL have in stock - and then report it here.
I do quite honestly think that this ad - and this weekend - will decided whether or not the PS3 is a success, or just an overpriced gadget. Is their launch a failure or a success - and thus, will Europe in March even give a damn?
Strike Man @ Dec 30th 2006 11:46PM
Yeah, you tell him Ryoga! The minimum-wage clerk totally determines how much money these kids get for their games, and he should've easily given them many thousands for their loot!
I mean, come on, a Playstation 2! Not only is that cutting-edge technology, but it's quite rare too! I've only heard of a few thousand existing, so this pawn shop broker (who you totally owned!) should've at least had the courtesy to give the kid $450 or so for it. I mean, give me a break, the kid was only around eleven years old, and these things were going for over $1,000 on eBay when they first came out! It sickens me that he could've given the kid anything less than that.
And wow, 70 games?! I bet the kid mentioned above was totally into some of the more rare titles from the last few years. I mean, he probably had at least a dozen Disgaea's coming out of his pockets, and he probably had more copies of Rez than he knew what to do with! And don't even get me started on that stack of Steel Battalions he carried in under his arms!
In no way can I imagine that this high-class kid would have such common properties like NFL Fever 2002 or Jak & Daxter with him. And if he did, those games should still be worth a good $75 each, even if they were used by a kid! I have a litter of children myself, and let me tell you, these angels certainly know their way around the ring of a DVD disc. One time, I tossed a few copies of Suikoden 2 into a crib with my twins, and I kid you not, the next day, the discs looked even better than they had before!
And all of that for a new PS3 and a game that isn't even available in the US yet (remember, you said a copy of, not even "a preorder of")? Wow...
*yawns and wonders why he spent the time typing a sarcastic response to that post*
