Just thought I would throw in my experience here. This morning after church I decided to kill some time until the afternoon New Year's Eve service. I drove to the local Best Buy and see what they had. I really wasn't going to buy anything just to look around and play with the gadjets. As I was strolling through the dvd movie section a guy comes on the pa system and says "Attention all customers we have several 60gb PS3's available for purchase at the front registers. Come by and own one of the hottest gifts of this holiday season. Systems are available at the front." I waited a few minutes and then watched to see if anyone rushed to the front to buy one. Every customer that I saw continued to move about the store as if the ps3 in stock didn't matter. I don't know what is worse. The fact that someone had to announce that ps3's were in stock or that noone moved after the announcement. And I don't live in a small town mind you. This is downtown Houston, Tx. This really bodes bad for Sony.

Dont forget Oldschoolgamer, if you're just going to BB to browse, its hard to justify coming up with 600 bucks on the spot to buy something, its a lot easier to spend say 250, then just drop 600 unannounced.

I dont think Sony is any trouble. In my neck of the woods (Mid Michigan) you can find a PS3 or Wii to save your life.

Most of the electronics stores DO get them in, but they sell out pretty quickly, in fact the BB and EB up here, the Wii and PS3 outsell the 360 and the PS2 outsells all 3 combined.

So either way Sony is making their money, be it the PS3 or PS2 and Nintendo's got the Wii and DS. So i dont think either of them are really hurting now.

Besides like the 360, Sony's biggest month will be sometime a year after it launches, probably the same for the Wii too.

For what its worth though, Sony is actually shipping out more and more units than the 360 did last year i believe.

very true JJ. judging anything right now is silly. give it a year. see what next christmas shopping season is like and then you'll get a good idea as to how things are shaping up. if sony can put out some killer apps this year and maybe lower the price too, sony should do well next x-mas. it doesn't matter to sony how well the wii does. the same games on both consoles will always be better on the ps3 which is why the wii is much better off with unique titles.

Microsoft seriously needs to work on its advertising campaign or get a new firm on board. This is the point where they could be putting their boot on Sony's neck in the market and yet they seem to just be coasting in the market. Any good marketing company can smell blood in the water right now for Sony and Microsoft seems to just be swimming around, fat and content at their current place in the market.

I don't see any justification for pay $600 for a GAME console. Screw the Blu-ray aspect, everyone knows the Playstation name for it's games, not as a damn movie player. If Nintendo had a console for $600 I wouldn't touch it either. No gaming console should be more than $300, period.
You can say I am "too poor" to afford a $600 console, but I am not. That's the easy answer to the "PS3 costs too much' statement. The more obvious answer is that A LOT of people do not think a console is worth paying $600 for. ESPECIALLY since the MAJORITY of people have yet to purchase a HDTV. I have a HDTV and I still think a gaming console is not worth $600.
I will own a PS3 one day, when it is $300 or less and if all the devs haven't jumped ship by then.
Until then I will enjoy my Wii and wait for the 360 price drop. Once that premium pack hits $300, I will own one also.
Now IF Sony was smart, they will swallow their pride and offer a PS3 with out the Blu-ray player and knock $300 of the price. 360 will be in trouble then.
Then again, Sony does love pushing the proprietary formats. At least Blu-ray is better than UMD, in the sense that there are other ways to play Blu-ray besides the PS3.

tituspullo the reason you couldnt find any 360s was because there werent any, last year when i worked for EB we got 2 shipments between launch and xmas and then nothing to febuary and even then it was late february so by the end of the 3 months we had sold maybe...20 360's.

Where as the EB now regularly gets 4 to 6 PS3's EVERY week and they usually sell them out within 1 to 2 days of getting them. Heck like i said the PS3 is outselling the 360 at my personal EB right now.

Went by the local best buy at about 4:00 PM in Newport News, VA .Not to buy a PS3 but to see if the PS3's are selling good. I went to the video game section and saw no PS3's but then I went to where they have two huge flat screens with a 360 hooked up to one and PS2 hooked up to the other. While looking at a dude playing Guitar Hero II with about eight other people I saw them and thought Sony you really messed up. How is it a week after christmas and there are 20 yes I said 20 PS3's sitting on the shelf. Either people think you can't get them so there not looking or they see 20 of them sitting there and thought the same thing I did. I can spend close to $700 and play Resistance then wait till feb or march for some games that are already on the 360 to come out. Just to add one more note there were no Wii's and less 360's than PS3's.

Best Buy in Thousand Oaks, CA (just outside of Los Angeles), had about 30 PS3's sitting in the customer service area around noon today.

I stopped by again after 5pm (they closed at 6pm on NYE), and they were down to about 17. So quite a few moved in the 5ish hours, but not the sellout that I'm sure Best Buy was hoping for.

Same experience here. Large, busy BB in northern NJ. At about 4PM, they had about a dozen of them stacked up near the entrance, and another 3-4 on the shelf in the videogame section. The great bit was the fact that every few minutes they were pleading with people over the PA to buy the things: "Attention customers, the Playstation 3 is available in the media section". I stood around for a good 1/2 hr and didn't see one of 'em move. Nice enough machine, but nobody's buying 'em.

We have two best buys in my immediate area (northern CA) and there were a stack of PS3 at the one I visited this afternoon.

I knew having 25 would be a mistake.

They would have been better off with '5 at each store'

It looks stupid to have that much inventory sitting around so close to being launched. Makes it seem like no one wants one.

This is not a good sign.

I think they will sell much better next Christmas when more games are out- right now the Wii has the attention and the price point people are more interested in.

What a joke!
If Sony wouldn't have shipped any units; you'd say it's bad for Sony.

Sony ships plenty of units and now you say that's bad for Sony too.

Every store has hundreds of 360's, accessories etc....; no one is buying them even with all the games they have out and it's cheaper.
That's Sad!!!!

kdo, keep dreaming.

I know exactly what firmware is. I have a degree in computer engineering. Trust me when I say that (with the exception of FPGAs) firmware CANNOT modify hardware or add new functionality to hardware.

The only way that firmware can control hardware is through registers, and that is extremely limited. When Microsoft "added" 1080P on existing hardware using firmware, they didn't really modify the hardware's capabilities. The DAC was already capable of synthesizing arbitrary pixel clock frequencies and raster timing based on software-configurable registers. The DAC has registers for pixel clock frequency, number of scanlines, number of active pixels per scanline, duration of the sync signals, etc.. All the firmware update did was modify the operating system software so that the operating system software could write a new combination of register values that result in a 1080P signal.

That kind of "controlling the hardware" is a lot different than what would be needed to fix the PS3's scaling problems. To scale 720P to 1080i, or the PS2 games' non-standard horizontal resolution to an HDMI-compliant resolution, the hardware would need a line-buffer and multiple-and-accumulate operators built into the DAC. If that chip does not have the transistors for those features designed and built in, then it cannot scale 720P to 1080i. No firmware can add transistors to an ASIC! Understand? Good.

To 'The Kid':

What you don't seem to understand is that the XBox 360 should not be selling out in it's 2nd holiday sales season. Microsoft has had a year to manufacture a large surplus of goods that will be available in the retail channel; and continue to support the retail channel until their system is no longer in demand.

Sony, on the other hand, should be frantically trying to keep up supply to a market that is starved for their product. As we have seen the past week+, the market is not exactly starving for PS3's.

I certainly wouldn't count Sony out at this point, it is far too early to make that sort of call. However, I think Sony needs to evaluate their position and possibly start working on some damage control. Their "hot new" console has proven to be just "warm", and that isn't how you want to enter a market.

Well Titus.. i'm just going by how my store fared, we got very little shipment, of course we never did sell a WHOLE lot of 360's either. heck in the last month they'd be lucky to sell 20 or so 360's.

So while your BB may have gotten a lot, our EB didn't. Believe me i'm not playing games, I got my 360 launch day, love it, play it all the time.

I'm just reporting how things went in my neck of the woods and thus my "opinion".

Because, well, I know not EVERYwhere in the country is like the town i live in, i'd be an idiot to think that. If that were true, then the 360 has already lost the war, the PS3 has sold more than the Wii and PS2 and DS are the only real systems worth having.

But we all know thats not ALWAYS the case. So just remember, what happens in one store... doesn't always get repeated at the thousands of electronics stores across the country.

I want to thank Sony for allowing linux to run on the ps3. If it wasn't for that I'd never got around to playing with linux. Now if the greedy ba$tards at Terra Soft will just come off the updates I'm sure it will be my casual net surfing toy of choice.(37" screen) Just sucks it dont have flash or any other plug-ins working yet. My goal like most is to turn it in to a xbmc of sorts. As for ps3 games.. meh. Make something worth playing or make a dongle so I can play RfoM with a keyboard and mouse. Hate joystick fps.

So this xmas I decieded to try and get my little bro a PS3, so I patiently waited in line during the launch at Best Buy in Boston. I got a 20 gig unit.. Went home, i was pumped. Wrapped it up, of course kept the receipt in a safe place. Gave it to my brother on xmas.. he didnt want it. He wanted the wii.. so i am like, cmon thats bs. He said he didnt want it no good games and he wouldnt use if for movies. So today I returned the unit. I look behind her in the return section and I saw about 15 60 gig units just sitting there. So i ask are those returns too ? She replied no those are units for sale... Mind you its now 4 oclock in the afternoon. I was astonished. So i then ask have many poeple been buying them. She replied no like maybe a handful. Complete shock right now. I asked do u have any wii's . She then laughed and was like hell no. So i get my 500 hundred dollars back. HELL YES! And walk out towards the back, and then I see a couple each holding a 360 in their hands with a few games...

Wii60 is apparently the way to go this year. So i turned around and bought a 360 with gears of war and rainbow 6. Rock on!
