Crysis crisis averted: heading to Xbox 360? [update 1]

Update -- Joystiq (translation: this writer) got punked by the Spanish and the Day of the Innocents. Thanks to all the commenters who chimed in to let us know that this was indeed an April's Fools type hoax, and that it's not to be believed. Aye, dios mio!
First Crytek said that their first upcoming graphical overload game Crysis couldn't be ported to the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. Then they switched gears and said, "Oops ... looks like we were wrong." Now we have some evidence that confirms it'll be coming to the 360 sooner than you think.
Granted, the proof is translated from todoxbox360.com, but if the Google translator is to be believed, then it looks like Crysis will be hitting Microsoft's bad boy at some point. The article doesn't say when, but it's tantalizing enough to make us drool. Crysis is visually amazing, and 360 owners would be happy to see it on their screens. Hopefully we'll have official word from Electronic Arts soon, although they're probably getting ready to ring in the New Year with millions of microtransactions.
[Thanks, MECHAN1ZED and Janx]

The source for your link is a site called "Hardgame2". Going to www.hardgame2.com results in a Spanish site saying that the site is down.
We'll just mark this one down as "rumor at best".
oren @ Dec 30th 2006 1:14PM
If you read the translation, EA has said that they are "trying to make the development costs for the console have a profit" or something to that effect.
Fuck EA. They are doing just what ubisoft did, and taking the game from the developer just to make money.
starfox @ Dec 30th 2006 1:19PM
it's a stupid spanish prank day rumor...
Think a little, how much news come from spanish sources... none cauze they know shit.
Crisis es German stuff... Keep It Real, and don't Spread stupid Rumors without Verification...
Stupid Spanhish, that don't have regular holidays.

Just something to add:
28 December = 1 April in Spain
ok ?
Javier @ Dec 30th 2006 1:20PM
Hey im from pr so i know spanish, the article says that Ea and crytek have agreed to bring the game to the 360. also the article says that they dont have a release date but they want to bring the game before Q1 2008 to make a profit. the article mentions that Ea will design infrastructure and neccesary developtmen tools.
starfox @ Dec 30th 2006 1:24PM
It's a Hoax, and has been confirmed by the site himselfs...
Has a person with a minimal sense would need their confirmation.
smellslikepie @ Dec 30th 2006 1:26PM
You do realise that it was posted on the 28th of December? and that site is Spanish?
28th of December is the Spanish equivalent to April fools day.
R.J. @ Dec 30th 2006 1:27PM
I agree, EA is a sleezy corporation, who could careless for their consumer's opinions. However if Crisis is ever to be slapped onto the 360, don't you think it would ruin its potential? The reason it is so hyped is because of the physics engine, and that might go to waste a lot more than people think. On top of that EA is going at the developer's knees to make this game rank is some money. This a fine example on how a game becomes overabundent on store shelves.
Matt @ Dec 30th 2006 2:46PM
"First Crytek said that their first upcoming graphical overload game Crysis couldn't be ported to the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3."
There were very much correct, for two reasons:
First, Crysis uses a technology called DirectX 10. It's a form of graphics rendering ONLY availible on the PC, with features ONLY availible to it (and being used by Crysis). For the record, the Xbox 360 uses a modified version of DirectX 9.
Second, the game is visually a powerhouse. Dedicated computer graphics cards are such that they have 800Mhz cores, 2Ghz memory, and 768MB of memory on one card, and, you'll easily need two cards to get the most beauty out of a game such as Crysis.
With that being said, while the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 don't work quite the same as computers (they can do more with less, but to an extent), they suffer similar limitations. The Xbox 360's 512MB of memory has always been a shitty amount, there's no question, however the Playstation 3's 256MB is just terrible. Also, the graphics cards in the next-gen systems (sans Wii) are equivalent to a GeForce 7800GTX for those technically inclined... as we all know, such a card is holding BOTH systems back and always has.
Both systems will choke on Crysis, the same as the Xbox 360 choked on Oblivion. Don't beleive me? Ask a buddy with a $2,000 gaming system to show you Oblivion and then play it on the 360. The Xbox 360 does a good job with Oblivion, and it's commendable considering Oblivion's thirst for memory (and the 360's lack thereof), but the difference is night and day.
And Oblivion isn't even that pretty for a computer game.
Crysis is easily twice as graphically amazing as Oblivion, as Far Cry was so superior almost three years ago. And you can only get that on a PC, the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 will utterly choke when trying to produce even a third the quality the PC version will provide in terms of graphics.
And I'm not a PC fanboy, just a nerd (with a 360, Wii, and decent gaming system, planning to get a PS3 btw) who knows his stuff and doesn't fall for "omg Crysis on 360 d00d!" type crap. It'll run on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, anybody who thought otherwise is a chump. It will run MUCH less pretty, however.
fdezjose @ Dec 30th 2006 1:35PM
I'm from Spain, as it has been said the 28th of December (Día de los Santos Inocentes) is like the 1st of April in the States, so that rumor from todoxbox360 is fake.
So now you know, don't read any piece of information from Spain if it is dated 28th of December.
Happy New Year everyone!!
8dot3 @ Dec 30th 2006 1:38PM
Even if this is just a hoax, do we really think that this game is not coming to consoles? It was running on DX9 hardware at E3, which means its possible to port to 360. It just won't look as good as it does on a PC with DX10 hardware.
Bidermaier @ Dec 30th 2006 1:41PM
The picture is a newspaper cut off shaped like a little guy, that is the symbol of the spanish fools day. Santos Inocentes, remembering how that evil Jew king Herodes ordered to kill all the babies in Belen and surroundings just to make sure Jesus was killed. LOL.
Autocrawler @ Dec 30th 2006 1:59PM
Crysis on consoles? Ok, I am all for it, just give us a PC port of Gears of War first. :) However, this is just a hoax as others said, looking up 28 December on Wikipedia confirms it.
Personally, I don't believe Microsoft would be interested in seeing a console port of Crysis any time soon-they need Crysis to drive their Games for Windows initiative.
Maylon @ Dec 30th 2006 2:02PM
This game looks beautiful, but very yawn inducing like any Clancy game. And whats with the argument I keep seeing from PC gamers? You all seem really afraid that this game may come to a console, wtf? Do you really have that much disposable income that it enables you to afford a Geforce 8800 plus whatever other hardware upgrades you may need to play ONE game? EA is a greedy corp, yet Nvidia and ATI (Yes, I realize ATI made the chipset for the 360) continuously sucker morons like you into upgrading what, every 6-9 months?
Mats @ Dec 30th 2006 2:08PM
Us PC gamers don't want to see a Port of this game for a console as it will effect the way they make the game to begin with. We all know how much Deus Ex 2, Oblivion and the newest Hitman got effected by crappyness since they wanted to port them over to the console world.
If PC exclusive games get a Cross platform stable it's always a show of crap to come.
Autocrawler @ Dec 30th 2006 2:11PM
EA is a greedy corp, yet Nvidia and ATI (Yes, I realize ATI made the chipset for the 360) continuously sucker morons like you into upgrading what, every 6-9 months?"
This may seem an elitist statement, but how can call oneself a "hardcore gamer" if one is unwilling to spend whatever is needed to play games on the highest possible graphical settings?
And no, you don't have to upgrade every "6-9 months". Personally I upgrade once a year-but then I just love playing on the fastest rig possible, while if you go for the mid-end, you can very well upgrade once every two years and still play new releases.
The PC needs exclusives right now, since PC gaming is suffering as a platform, and exclusive games will only serve to attract more people to it.
That said, I am pretty certain you'll see console ports of Crysis eventually-just like with Far Cry. Of course it won't be exactly the same game even in the gameplay department, but still...
Slashbunny @ Dec 30th 2006 2:16PM
Regardless of what happens, both the Xbox360 and PS3 can run Crysis. They are just drama queens. DirectX 10, just like any DirectX version, it's some magical thing that creates amazing graphics. It is simply a tool. As stated, Crysis was running on DX9. Other consoles don't even have DirectX and they have had no problems making superb graphics. The Xbox had DirectX 8.1. It's really moot. If a developer wants to port a game to Xbox360 or PS3 or whatever, it can be done.
Crytek's comments seem to suggest they don't want to maintain a DX9 version or an OpenGL-based version of their game. It's really their loss. The money is in console software sales. They spend so much time developing the engine and game, you would think they would want to increase their chances of sales by supporting more platforms. I guess not. It will also be a hard to license the engine out to other developers if it ONLY works on PCs- Wait, only PCs running Windows Vista. Ouch. Another developer would choose the Unreal 3 engine, as it can be made to run on everything. Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux, Mac OSX, Wii (regardless of what Mark Rein says...),PS3, Xbox 360, etc, etc, etc.
I have a feeling they will be forced to port the game and engine to other platforms eventually.
Slashbunny @ Dec 30th 2006 2:18PM
erm... "...ISN'T some magical thing..."
:p
Autocrawler @ Dec 30th 2006 2:20PM
"It will also be a hard to license the engine out to other developers if it ONLY works on PCs- Wait, only PCs running Windows Vista. Ouch."
Incorrect, Crysis WILL run on Windows XP, just without the fancy DX10 effects. The devs have confirmed it.
Mad Dick Bones @ Dec 30th 2006 2:29PM
Crysis crisis? Seriously, you can come up with something better than that.
Making a blog post that turns heads only to find out that it's based on purely fictional information is a prime reason why blogs, and video game journalism as a whole, is not respected.
I realize a main advantage of blogs is almost instant information, but you should at least do a little research before getting everyone excited for nothing.
And seriously... Crysis crisis? That just sucks.
Cyber @ Dec 30th 2006 2:34PM
Of course is a prank ("Dia de los inocentes", you know...)... but it's a matter of time.

Dear jer,
After reading your comment and the comment by Matt right above you, I have decided that Matt's post is much more convincing. Why? Well that's simple. The person that takes the time to correctly spell out their words, and the person who uses correct grammar will appear more confident in their statements. Therefore, I would suggest you go and read an English textbook. When you're done learning the basics of the English language, come back to me and try to make your point again. Until then, lay off the unnecessary abbreviations and type like you know what you're doing.

Nvidia does provide the playstation 3 with its GPU (7800 gtx) or as the computer world calls it (P.O.S) it was ablolutly worthless, not the mention wast of money. PC's run diffrent than the xbox 360 and playtation 3. its true what Jer says its about programing but is does have to do with hardware. Lets all be honest here come on sony 256 mb's???????????? worthless is all i can say. and Matt you need to get your facts right. Computers are great but EA sucks every one hates them... #23 learn how to not be gay...

okay 1st of all people that are comparing with xbox 360 to pc's are pure dummies cuz they both are differenet from each other, u idiots are comparing apples to oranges
and besides remeber ghost recon and why it waz delayed for the 360, becuz they wanted to optimize it for the xb360 and look at it now comparing to pc version the xb360 looks 10x better. the xenos gpu found in the 360 is flexible and haz features that the pc's dont have rightnow oh and not everyone cant afford a high-end gaming pcand they only last about a year until a new gpu comes out. personally i think console gaming is better particularly the 360 cus it has cool exclusive like halo 3 and etc. the 360 is like a supercomputer look at all those flops an S***. the 360 waz designed for games. and pc gaming sucks anyway cuz look half the 360 ames sold over a million copiez and look at pc nada, everytime i walk into gamestop they always have a stack of pc games to be sold,.
CPT Stewart @ Dec 30th 2006 6:39PM
What was that "CHRIS"? Sorry, all I could see was a mess of question marks and bad grammar. Romie, have you ever played the PC version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter? I doubt you did, because the games are completely different. Never was the PC version meant to look the same as the Xbox 360 version. That said, they each have their strengths and weaknesses, neither being definitely better than the other.
In summary:
To CHRIS a.k.a. number 25: Learn how to use the English language, it'll really take you places.
To romie a.k.a. number 26: Why bother putting the "z" at the end of "haz" instead of the "s"? It's the same number of letters. It doesn't shorten anything, and it certainly doesn't make you look smart.

I feel like, PC gamers seem to care about graphics a lot more than everyone else in the world. "You CAN'T have Crysis on a console, because the graphics won't be as good." Do you realize that graphics have 0 effect on the quality of a game? And yes, I realize graphics are the major selling point of a lot of games, Crysis being a perfect example. I'm very eager to see how the game actually plays when it comes out (not that I'd be surprised if it was good, Farcry sure was). The whole thing, though, is just a perfect example of how pathetic the gaming world is becoming, especially the PC market. I'm no one's fanboy, but right about now, I've gotta say, Nintendo seems to be the only company with its mind in the right place.
Autocrawler @ Dec 30th 2006 10:38PM
"The whole thing, though, is just a perfect example of how pathetic the gaming world is becoming, especially the PC market."
Pathetic? In what way? When we are promised a game with THE best visuals ever, there can be no compromises. The comparatively lower graphical power of the consoles isn't the only factor here: controls are as well. If you've played first the original Far Cry, then the console ports, you would understand what I am talking about. Far Cry Instincts was nothing like the PC version, it lost all of its non-linearity and amazing enemy AI all due to "optimization for console controls". Free-roaming gameplay Crysis is said to have, would have to be at the very least partially dumbed down for console controls as it happened with Instincts. I am all for a console port, as long as it does not affect the PC release in any way-and that would be possible only if it was released much later than the PC version. And don't remind me of the X360's keyboard support-since Microsoft simply does not allow the developers to include keyboard/mouse controls for *any* XBox games.
Autocrawler @ Dec 30th 2006 10:42PM
"Do you realize that graphics have 0 effect on the quality of a game?"
Right, you tell that to Gears of War. There was a game once, Kill.switch that played very similarly to Gears of War, but was quite ugly-looking. A question for you: why didn't it win numerous GotY awards and such then?
Carlos @ Dec 31st 2006 2:55PM

"Right, you tell that to Gears of War. There was a game once, Kill.switch that played very similarly to Gears of War, but was quite ugly-looking. A question for you: why didn't it win numerous GotY awards and such then?"
It didn't win Game of the Year awards because it didn't have multiplayer, co-op or a memorable cast of characters.
These next few paragraphs are directed toward H. and anyone who agrees with what he said.
I'm getting tired of all this, "Graphics have absolutely zero effect on the quality of the game," crap.
If The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess (to all you Zelda fans, because we all know that the graphics argument comes from Wii and DS owners) had come out using the same engine (if you can even call it that) of the one used in the original Zelda for the NES, would you buy it? Sure you would because you're a Zelda fan. Would you enjoy it as much as you do now? Now that there are lush detailed environments, an 3D landscape to explore, details on clothing and character faces to make the characters look more like people than blobs of color. Would you give it numerous Game of The Year awards if it had not looked as good at it did?
I seriously doubt it.
Without the advancement of graphics technology, some of the features we see in games today would not be possible, such as realistic lighting to set the mood, and fluid character animations to make you feel like you're controlling a real animal (yes that includes human beings), along with the freedom of artistic expression as seen in games like Okami.
In the end, the argument that graphics have absolutely zero effect on game play is false. Having the "best graphics ever" does not necessarily make it better than the games close behind it on the scale (like comparing Gears of War to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess), but advancements in technology do allow for more immersion into the story and the characters and the world presented to you.
