I wish it could do HDR and AA at the same time. Would make it a little smoother but I like it well enough.

Yea, the visuals are nice, but its all pre-rendered bullshit. The cars don't even take damage at all, again, because it's pre-rendered. Your better off playing Forza Motorsport 2 if you want a "Real Racing Simulation", better physics, better online, ala' XBOX LIVE. THIS GAME SUCKS!

I am VERY eager for this game. I played through the entire demo in one sitting, which consists of racing the same track at least 10 times. Amazing looking, and plays quite well. Forza 2 might play better, simply because the 360 controller is better for racing games, but it will be VERY hard pressed to look as good. I really hope the final product has several more camera angles though.

afterall, i did get a ps1 for GT, a PS2 for GT, and yes even an xbox for Forza, but Gt is still the best.

and just a little tidbit of information for all those "ps3 loosing its best excluseves", i dont care really but GT is prolly PS3's biggest excluseive, people seem to forget that gran turismo is the top selling game on BOTH the PS1 and PS2

Gran Turismo and the Dual Shock brought me into the playstation fold back in the 90's but i've since left. If ANYTHING were to bring me back it would be GT5 and a price drop.

That said the original Forza was a revelation compared to GT4. The second looks to up the ante where GT5 looks to be a prettier version of GT4 that pays no mind to the upstart original forza. This is a classicly arrogant mistake regardless of how swell it looks. But only time will tell what the final product will be.

GT series has lost me as well. If their big selling point is better graphics? Count me out.

I don't see the GT PSP version, I don't have real damage, and the PC games are better simulations by far. It's not so much that the simulation isn't perfect, but that it isn't good enough to be a simulation (6 cars only? no damage? changing weather effects?) and it isn't fun enough to be a great game - the auto-pilot mode was a terrible decision that allowed them to make a huge, boring game. I'm definitely moving onto 360's Forza instead of waiting for ps3 price drops that will never come and a playable gt5 that will also never come.

I played this in Ginza before it was announced as a free download. I thought it looked incredible. I think the Gran Turismo series as a whole is in need of some serious updating - it's gotten pretty stale in the gameplay department compared to some other racing games - but I don't think the graphics are anything Polyphony's got to worry about at this point.

@ChiTownMexican: Rendering is a word used to describe the process of creating an image from a computer model. For example, a box can be stored in a computer as six surfaces having certain coordinates in 3D space. When rendered, the computer calculates light and perspective on those 6 surfaces to generate an image of a box.

When someone argues that some demo movie of a game is pre-rendered, they are saying that a computer rendered the movie frame-by-frame and it does not represent the graphics that would be shown in-game because it was not generated by the console. Since gt5 is playable, the graphics are clearly being generated in real time by the PS3 so it is representative of what the graphics would look like in the finished product.

I think the demo is amazing, graphically. If anything it really amazes since this is merely an update to gt4, so I can only imagine what GT5 will look like. The game is stunning, and as always, the driving does not try to "fool" the player by giving you a false sense of speed like some other racers I know.

Max... how is that possible when the gran turismo series has been around LONG before Forza.. or even the Xbox was even out?

Gran Turismo was always known as the real racing simulator BEFORE forza was even conceived. So to say it has always been forza is like saying that the DS has ALWAYS been the only portable gaming device worth having.

Forza is a great game, but you cant count out the Gran Turismo series just because you think Forza is awesome. Thats like writing off the original Doom because Halo rocks.

Thats like harping on people who think Halo 3 or Gears of War 2 will be great because they liked the previous one.

Personally I think Halo 3, Gears 2 and GT5 will look awesome. Despite your negativity, As devs spend more time on a system, they actually can coax more and more power out of it. Or have you not paid any attention to any games released on systems for the last... i dunno...10 years ?

Whatever shortcomings are in the Demo, i'm sure polyphony will address when they decide to make GT5.

Most of these Forza comments are a joke. So what... they are two games that do the same thing. You have yet to even see a REAL playable demo of Forza 2. We've seen video which as our esteemed colleague ChiTownMexican put it, is pre-rendered. We have no way of knowing if Microsoft isn't blowing the same smoke up your ass that Sony does. The GT series is growing stale, but Forza isn't the end-all-be-all of the genre. Not by far. Go play some other simulations and you'll find some better titles out there. I've logged more hours on my PC playing the McRae series and the Burns game than I did playing the GT series. I put Forza down after 3 hours. It was terrible. The cars don't handle right. It's like you're driving on a slick track 100% of the time.

Someone also cared to mention how ricing out your car with bodykits is "true" customization. You're a fool. Hollywood has won you over with their Fast and the Furious BS and it's a shame. Making your car look nice is great, but real car enthusiasts want their cars to perform first and then worry about "looking good." Don't get me wrong, everyone wants their car to look nice, but if EA has proven anything it's that video game developers think people want their cars to be riced out piles of crap. Stereos and Neon do not equal "performance" tuning options. Adding 22 inch wheels that are still 7 inches wide DOES NOT equal a performance upgrade. I want to change the width of my tires for better grip. I want the option to stretch tires onto the wheels of my car for less traction for a drift setup. I want the option to really change the suspension of the car. Not just Levels 1, 2, and 3. I want to say coil-overs up front and springs/shocks in the rear (1985 Toyota Corolla GTS setup. If you have a clue you'll know why I said that...)

That is a simulator. Every car in GT sounds pretty much the same. I want REAL exhaust notes. Not this generic BS. Developers have a long way to go to make people like me happy with a "Simulation." But GT and Forza try, and their efforts are notable. Both games are different and have strengths the other doesn't. Does that make one better than the other? No. So drop this pointless e-peen stroking and recognize that graphically the GT demo is pretty. That's all that's trying to be said. Again it's free... why bitch about it? Without HD it's all pointless anyway. So over 75% of the market is not going to see the benefit. So stop the name calling and BSing just enjoy a nice free car sim that looks pretty decent if you have the hardware to support it.

Who knows... if Forza 2 ever comes out in playable form maybe it'll stack up to look as nice. I don't buy the CGI. If Sony and Polyphony ever step it up and show us some REAL GT5 stuff maybe it will have car damage, and maybe it will be great, but they really need to change some stuff or they are going to lose a lot of sales.

It looks amazing and plays well too, and it's a free downloadable demo, so what's all the fuss? Cool with me. The cars, the spectators, the atmosphere are all great. I'll probably get the next GranTourismo when it hits the PS3, as long as it's online. Still no using the front triggers, however - the PS buttons are analog, but certainly not as 'controllable' as the triggers.

What's awesome, however, is the MotorStorm demo - that is going to be a fun game. Just downloaded the F1 demo, gonna check that out... Redundant racing demos on the PS3 - It's like the 360 launch when Geometry Wars, Smash TV, and Robotron were available - all games that used the 'Left stick/Move -Right stick/Shoot' control scheme.

No other game of any genre even looks "equally as great" as this demo. It is the most photorealistic game that there is on any platform. Forza 2 is going to be an awesome game and I think it may be better than GT5 in certain ways but graphically speaking it looks decidedly last gen when compared to this demo!

The Gran Turismo series is the best racing simulator out there. Period. Want to know why? Physics. They actually have realistic physics. And the game actually challenges you. Forza is fun... for an arcade racing simulator. Sure you can harp about how F2 is going to be better than GT5, but can you back that up? Right now it looks like we have a playable High-def GT game demo (Free!) and 4 titles in the series that have consistantly improved. And we have 1 Forza title that was fun average. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit was more realistic. When you can come up with a better argument than Forza has bodykits, damage and MIGHT look better when the new one comes out IF you have HD, let all of us real driving fans know. Until then we'll be playing our GT4 and GT HD demo.

I only have room in my heart for one racing game...
I had an Atari, a Nintendo, A Sega, then Sega-CD.
Then I got a PS1 in High school even though my heart still lay with the ill fated Sega Saturn. Although I quickly forgot about Sega after playing just 3 games among hundreds I played. FFVII, Metal Gear Solid, and Gran Turismo. Prior to this, my favorite racing game was Daytona USA (in the arcades). GT was as close to real as anything I had ever seen. I dumped weeks of my time perfecting my racing, and getting gold on all of the challenges, and crushing opponents with the Mitsubishi GTO! (Veterans will know what I'm talking about)
Until they came out with GT2! To be honest, I thought the graphics looked a little worse than GT1 but the options the game provided were FAR superior to GT1. Dirt track racing, more tracks in exotic locations, hundreds more cars?? OMFG! My excitement for this racing game grew 2 fold and I played it with greater zeal than GT1. Oh, and the introduction of the Escudo, the craziest car I've ever raced with (or tried to race with...too fast I say, too fast!) in the GT series.
Then, in college, my buddy picked up his PS2, and later, bought GT3: A-Spec Our relationship quickly became strained because I would not get out of his room. I had a fever, and the only prescription, was more GT3. I was astounded by what the PS2 could do graphically. The car models...no more did their lines look boxy and polygonal, but smooth and realistic. The physics astounded me as well. To be able to see the car's weight shift to the front left wheel as I hit the break and took a hard right never got old to me. Other touches like seeing the rotors glow with the heat of friction from breaking was awesome. The GT series again had me playing for days on end.
Then GT4 came out. And GT4 to me was like how GT2 was to GT1. Pretty much the same yet a shit tone more options to screw around with. And surprisingly enough some graphical upgrades as well...had no idea the PS2 was capable of doing more than GT3, and in 1080i.

Everyone here clamoring for damage and online like the Forza series has are justified for the time being given GT's history. But apparently you haven't been paying enough attention to what GT5 is going to have included. And why would you pay any attention, you're too busy playing Forza. So let me clue you in.

- GT HD is just a graphical taste of what GT5 is going to be. There will be upgrades and tweaks to everything seen in the demo.
- GT5 will have damage...massive damage in fact, to its weak spot even.
- GT5 will be online, foreshadowed by the fact that there are leaderboards for race times offered in GT HD.
My only gripe with this demo is the god damn generic sound. I heard those tire squeals in GT2 for Christ sakes. And those engine noises are piss poor generic too...But there is a lot of time before release, so I'm sure these things will be covered before launch.

For me, what it boils down to is loyalty. I've played Forza on my old roommate’s Xbox, and it was a great racing game. Unfortunately at this point, there isn't room for 2 racing loves in my life. Polyphony digital has never disappointed me with any of the GT's. So I know whenever I get another GT it will be challenging and fun as hell. The GT series was instrumental in my getting a PS2 instead of an Xbox, and it may yet again sway my opinion when I decide to join the next gen...when my wife allows it...ahem..

PS2 was very good, but if you had an Xbox, you could avoid it. After very regretably missing the GT series on PS2, I am wanting it more than ever. I just won't ever shell out that much money for one game though. I sure wish Polyphony would get in a big fight with Sony and start making it multi platform. This is the only game that has the potential to make me angry I can't justify buying a PS3.
