Don't mean to be too pedantic, but the post did not employ sarcasm (language intended to harm), rather it employed verbal irony (language where the implied is the opposite of the literal). Much sarcasm uses irony to harm, but it doesn't have to. This blog post was intended to actually praise the games by using irony.

The reason the irony didn't work as a literary device in the post is that it didn't stay consistent. In one line the poster said that the graphics were poor, implying that the graphics were great. But another line criticizes the characters inability to jump, which is true (breaking the irony and slipping into non parallel figurative language--it's like mixing metaphors, but with irony instead.

Anyways, he's right. Gears of War sucked. I was miserable the whole time I played it. The worst part is using the chainsaw. . . the most unsatisfying kill experience in the history of gaming.

Um.. hows the replay value of First Person in Gears? Come on... Zelda takes like 90 hrs to complete... this is whack.

PS. GTA is a modern day ZOoT, not the other way around..

Kudos, underbiter. :)

Actually, I was trying to praise the fact that you can't jump, versus implying that you can. I was glad to take a break from the frantic jumping you see in other multiplayer shooters.

"Gears > Zelda.
I've seen it in many different
places, but the people just seem to not get it yet."
It looks as if most gamers still aren't capable of accepting another person's opinion. Joystiq is always such a fun read.

"As far as Zelda ,Guitar Hero, and Mario...none of those should even get a mention. A minigame adventure game, a rhythm game, and a 20 year old game...way
to pick em."
My bad. Just so I can discount them next time, what other genres do you dislike?

I'm currently more than 30 hours into Zelda, and I am enjoying almost every minute. I was disappointed by Wind Waker (especially the traveling...what torture), but TP is about the perfect Zelda game. Sure, the MIDI sound is ancient, but the gameplay is near perfection.

I have really enjoyed the dungeons so far, and the level design is great as always. The only problem is that the bosses are SUPER EASY.

In any case, it's a Zelda fan's wet dream. Of course, it's not completely new, but then again how much can you improve Zelda?

Kimosabae has obviously never heard of the three-heart
challenge. Yup, he just made himself look like an idiot.

See, the thing with Zelda is that you can choose how hard you want the game to be, simply by choosing how many heart containers you want to use in the game.

I saw lots of Oblivions fans.

I understand why a lot of people like the game, but I didn't like it myself. I think the game does not appear to as wide an audience as GoW does, especially with a lack of online play.

I used to love RPGs. That is all I used to really enjoy playing. Now, with the advent of online play, I only want to play with people. There is something much more fulfilling in a game where you and three teammates play against four others in a winner take all match. You get the feeling of beating the game when you win again and again. If there is a game without online play, I probably won't play it.

I finished GOW on easy and thought cool grafx and shit but is it over already? Then I tried the hardcore setting and realised that's how it's meant to be played. Brutal! Anyway, Zelda. I wanted to love it but without component cables the initial scenes were ugly blurtronic crap. I never made it to hyrule fields or whatever it's called. The same gaylord tunes I've already heard, running around askng everyone things and reading lots of text really sucked. Oblivion is better for sure. Wii sports is the worst game i have ever played! Too angry to describe why. Yuk.

To those hating on the Legend of zelda, my guess is your mad because the PS3 has no games on the list.Or maybe the the 360's best game is a Resident Evil 4 knock off. either way' nintendo has the best variaty of games your are familiar with (Zelda) and games you have never expirienced in similar fashion (Wii Sports). So keep hatin' haters, victory is made that much sweeter!

Okami is like that indie band no one ever listens to but all the snide hipster critics always worship whenever speaking.. sorry but someone has to actually play the game before it can be game of the year!! I rather see Age of Empires for DS listed here - they took a chance and nailed it for the format.. give them props..

I guess I'm one of those casual gamers that's enjoying Zelda: TP. I'm only about 40 hours in and I've had the game since 11/19, so I guess that speaks to the amount of time I have for gaming. I've only owned three consoles in my life: an Atari 2600, an XBox and now a Wii.

So, I've never played a Zelda before.

But I have played RPGs. And I am so glad that Zelda is not an RPG! Leveling? Farming? Killing rats? Not for me thanks. I've played tons of RPGs and I don't see why Zelda would be better of to be like one of them.

I didn't expect to like Zelda, but picked it up because of all the hype around it and, because, well -- you've got to play at least one Zelda in your life, right? But I was pleasantly surprised. It's a puzzle game! And it's a lot like the old *Quest games Sierra used to put out. And I don't have to spend 20 hours building up my character and completing minor quests in order to get to the real game!

I've been through quite a few of the dungeons at this point and what's really blowing me away about this game is how unique each area is and how much the game continues to evolve as you go through it. Sure, the best parts of the game are not that difficult (in fact, I'd argue that the only really challenging areas are those that suffer camera problems or from poor design), but there is so much to do and explore that it hardly matters. Just when you think that you've seen the entire world of Hyrule, a whole new part of the map opens up. Just as you think you've mastered all of the items in your inventory, you're given a new one.

I'm glad that killing the bosses (which I think were beautifully designed) isn't a matter of button combos or hp/ac. There are enough games out there that do that just fine. What always gets lost in that is that not every opponent can be beat using raw strength alone. Finally, a game that celebrates cunning.

Is the game perfect? No. The camera is sometimes annoying. Link's habit of jumping off ledges is frustrating. The combat isn't as tight as it should be. But I still find myself wanting to know what's on the other side of that next door...

Because I know it will be fun.

As far as this list goes...Okami, CoH, and Oblivion should have made the cut, but Gears should not have been number one.

Zelda should have. No matter what a few anti-TP people say in these comments, it is a great game. It is what the fans wanted. I believe Nintendo said this will be the last Zelda to use the classic formula, and that is a bittersweet thing. It'll be nice to see the series evolve, but regarding how much better the story and style and maturity of this game are and how refined the formula gets with the Wii Remote. Its sad to see it go. Zelda:TP hit it right on, in my opinion. Its not without its flaws, but it definately deserves game of the year, because regardless of whether or not you admit it...it did bring new things to the table this time around and its the not the same Zelda it was in the last few games. But, then again...like assholes...we all have opinions.

If you think Zelda TP is too easy, skip getting heart containers. Enter the later bosses without fairies. Let's see how tough you are then bitches. If you hate Zelda for being the same old thing, then please don't even touch GTA, and watch out for Madden, it will cause you a seizure.

Zelda is more like an interactive movie rather than a game. It just guides you along with some side quests to keep you pressing buttons.

The difficulty is the most horrid part of the game. I am literally breezing through it, forgetting things simply because the experience was so ephemeral I couldn't keep it in my long term memory.

That being said, Its still fun as hell to play a new Ocarina of time...

This list was a hilarious mockary of all those rather useless "Best of the Year" lists. Hilarious indeed.
