Fast hedgehog, slow loading
58
Like rusty scaffolding glimpsed behind a tarp flapping in the wind, the numerous technical issues in Sonic the Hedgehog are a reminder of the blatantly unfinished work that permeates the platformer. Consider this video a "Men at Work" sign, warning you of loading times that pile up so high, the slightest wobble will send them crashing down on you.
It's uncertain as to which possibility is more offensive -- that Sega could release this game convinced it was finished, or that they could release it knowing it wasn't.
[Thanks Mark!]

To #38 - no it's two L's. I have the higher quality video since well... i made it lol. Believe me I'm sorry for the crap quality, as I'm home from college on vacation and dont have my standard encoding equipment for high quality. I was stuck using a camcorder on a CRT TV (camcorders are terrible at recording a CRT TV instead of a LCD TV), and ontop of that, could only get it onto my computer via USB connection, as I don't have a firewire cable for it yet. My final review for the game will be with my good setup, which means great quality.

I played Gears of War today, after the Xbox was turned on , I selected "Resume Campaign" on Gears of War. It then took just 20 seconds to put me back to where I left off.. . The graphics are absolutely mind blowing and once you're in the game, loading times are almost non-existent or very very short.
In Saints Row, there are NO loading times whatsoever once you've loaded your save game file (actually the loading screens are disguised by a 2 second title screen when you start a storyline mission or before a cutscene)
In Project Gotham, races take around 30 seconds or less to load.
Overall, loading times are not an issue with any of the games I have on my Xbox 360.
I blame the loading times on whoever made Sonic!
The graphics aren't much to talk about (they're good! - but not great...) in Sonic compared to other games with much much shorter and less frequent loading times.

Everyone here has said what I wanted to say. But one little thing: if I ever get a chance to achieve my goal of becoming a game designer, I want to have an opportunity to work on or lead development on a good installment of the Sonic franchise. I doubt that'd happen, but I certainly would enjoy it (as much enjoyment as can be had in game development).

I had a similar issue in Oblivion. I kept getting long load times very frequently. Then someone told me that I had to clear the 360's cache, and then start create a new save file every time as opposed to saving over the original file, and it worked! Oblivion started working fast again with much shorter load times.
I don't remember the buttons I had to press while restarting the 360 to clear the cache, but I'm sure someone around here knows this.

After looking into Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii it seems like a very promising title. Not only does it focus *only* on Sonic, but it also focuses on speed rather than platforming and defeating enemies. It's "on rails", so the player does have less control over Sonic, but on the other side of the coin that means no more of the problems that have plagued the 3D iterations of the series.
Basically, from the previews I've read it sounds like one of the 2D Sonic games translated as smoothly as possible into three dimensions, and that's pretty much what most people have been wanting since Sonic Adventure.

Wow, I've seen awful load times but never ANYTHING like that.
I recently sold my PS3 to my cousin because there were no good games on it, in my opinion, but I thought about keeping it and wait for Sonic.
...I'm glad I didn't, though, if the load times are half that bad for the PS3 version.
Although it makes me wonder if it'd actually be WORSE on the PS3, since the Blu-Ray drive is only supposed to be a 2-4x speed drive, if I recall correctly.
Still...I hold out hope (increasingly feeling like it's in vain) for Sonic & The Secret Rings on the Wii...
I guess the plus side is that if the Wii Sonic is any good, it'll probably go to the PS3 since there's no reason the PS3 controller can't handle those same controls.
