Comedian Jimmy Carr takes act into Second Life
Irish funnyman Jimmy Carr is set to become the first major comedian to perform stand-up in Second Life. On February 3, as Carr takes the stage in London, his routine will be simultaneously broadcast to a select audience in the virtual world. Will his signature deadpan survive the translation?Carr is giving away tickets to the event through a competition on his MySpace page.
[Thanks Joe]
(Note: the BBC story grossly exaggerates the size of Second Life's user base. See: Analyzing the press' Second Life obsession)

Flying penises FTW??

Wasn't he the host of some gameshow here in the US? On Comedy Central, if I remember correct. Distraction?
Gotta look that up.

Missing the point of Second Life?
"But only 50 fans can see the stand-up in person, with a similar number watching the online show, Carr's spokesman said."
I thought the whole point of having an online world that's trying to be the Metaverse is that you didn't have to limit the amount of people attending something due to size constraints or cost.
Why wouldn't they let more people see it online? Having only 50 (or so) people in an online world that could support many more times that seems a bit constricting. In real life you limit the amount of people because of lack of physical seats and room. That wouldn't apply here, besides for things like server power and connection speed, but I think we can handle more here.

You're being pretty generous referring to him as a 'comedian'.....

Jimmy Carr's hillarious, if you don't apprectiate it, or you're american then don't comment. There's more than enough people who LOVE his skills.
He's funny as hell.
Dan @ Jan 3rd 2007 5:25PM
He's one of the most english people ever. Still though, usually Irish people are reported as English so this is a nice change...
Michael @ Jan 3rd 2007 5:12PM
For those who aren't aware Slough is no where near Ireland. Which is a separate country!
Mac Aoidh @ Jan 3rd 2007 5:35PM
He's Irish?!?
Goddamnit.... he's horrendous,
...now Tommy Tiernan on the other hand, is the god of Irish comedy.
Btw: On the subject of Jimmy Carr, people only (well, to a large extent) find him funny because they think his "character" is a "clever" comic persona, but sadly , that's what he is really like. If anyone else saw him crash and burn on Jonathon Ross, they'd understand.
Ps: On second thoughts, there's no way he's Irish.
*flicks to wiki*... phew.
MachRc @ Jan 3rd 2007 6:07PM
He got a lucky lap on top gear, but that so last year ...
Timkell @ Jan 3rd 2007 6:27PM
I think he's being mistaken for being Irish because he's got Irish parents grandparents or something not sure, but in any case just because he would be able to apply for an Irish passport doesn't mean he would refer to himself as Irish. I quite like his humour, though I'd like to see that Jonathon Ross footage mac aoidh any links?
Chris @ Jan 3rd 2007 6:46PM
Funny guy.
Couldn't give a crap about the second life thing though.
See him live, or watch his live dvd. Don't sign up to a crappy online chat room just so you can watch a jerky streaming of a live show.
Also, special shout out to Stoo, ladies and gentlemen, ....there's always one c***.
rip2roar @ Jan 3rd 2007 7:40PM
He was born in Limerick in Ireland. Don't believe me? Check wikipedia. He is Irish
Cabcru @ Jan 3rd 2007 7:37PM
Figure there's any chance he'll stay in Second Life? Fingers crossed.
WatTsu @ Jan 3rd 2007 9:43PM
I saw his Comedy Central special a while back. It was pretty funny.
I don't know if it can possibly translate to a virtual medium, though. It's too reliant on delivery. I guess some jokes could work, but the majority of them won't.
Still, a neat idea.

Jimmy carr isnt funny, he does nothing but one liner jokes OVER AND OVER..............can any of his comedy routines be done in more than 5 sentences? no.
