I'm not sure "Big Island, Hawaii" is the actual name of the place where this happened.

This doesn't make sense at this point. You can throw a rock and hit a PS3 available for purchase somewhere.

Jeff, "Big Island" is the nickname given to the largest of Hawaii's islands, since its official name (Hawaii) would obviously lead to some confusion.

The actual area of the incident, Kailua-Kona, is on the western part of the island.

Fun facts about Hawai'i:

While the entire state is named Hawai'i, the state is named after the largest island in the archepelago. To prevent confusion as to whether they mean the state of Hawai'i or the island of Hawai'i, the island of Hawai'i is often referred to as the Big Island. The actual crime, as stated in the article, specifically happened Kailua-Kona. Big Island police is basically Hawai'i's version of the county-level sherriff's department.

Given that the article in question has the suspect's license plate number, I have to say that this was a really stupid crook.

Also, neat Monster Party reference. That game had the most screwed-up ending ever.

Someone should tell people that they're not going for thousands on ebay anymore. Mainly because its a waste of money even at $600.

"And then they fused together..."

If bert could shoot freaking lasers out of his eyes, why the hell did he need some 8 year old kid and his baseball bat?

Although they aren't hard to find, they are still worth money.

They may not be worth millions on ebay, but if you didn't pay for it, you could return it to a store for credit, or get $600 out of it on ebay. It's more motivating than stealing a stereo I'm guessing.

Still, these theives are idiots.

There's a Best Buy around the corner from my work that has 4 or 5 PS3s since at least Monday.

Why the hostility for something that's very avaliable?

Need cash for crack I guess.....

This is exactly why whenever I buy any precious electronics, I bring my entire airsoft crew in two dark black suburbans. It scares the living shit out of any potential dobadders.

JK

My questions is why on earth didn't the brothers conceal the PS3, i mean with all of the publicity you'd think that common sense would prevail and people would keep there PS3's in a uhh nintendo 64 box.

"We understand there was a lot of hype surrounding the launch and the system's high price makes it attractive to thieves, but you would-be criminals should know that the system's after-market value isn't what it once was."

Obviously they're not working around the standard economic practices of 'buy low sell high' but around 'steal (i.e. zero monetary investment) and sell at stolen goods, black market style,' possibly even at $400.
